Industrial Park Road Hastings, MI Phone: Facsimile: Web: supplynet.com To meet the need for tamper-resistant fire extinguishing equipment in institutional settings, has introduced Institutional Quick Response Flush Pendent and Sidewall Sprinklers. Model HQR-2 pendent and horizontal sidewall sprinklers are designed specifically for use with concealed piping in institutional mental health occupancies, correctional facilities, or anywhere occupants may be likely to tamper with fire sprinklers. These small, flush, solder-link and lever spray sprinklers provide low breakaway features during conditions of misuse. An optional retaining flange offers a lock-tight design that secures piping to prevent sprinkler movement away from ceilings or walls. They can be disassembled in two ways: one destroys only the escutcheon and lockring, and the other destroys the entire unit. And, for installation flexibility, the horizontal sidewall sprinklers can be installed from 4 to 12 below the ceiling. Model HQR-2 sprinklers have a 1/2 thread and a 1/2 orifice. They consist of a sprinkler body with polished chrome finish, a lockring, and a 3-1/4 (82,5 mm) diameter thread-on escutcheon plate with chrome finish. They provide standard coverage per NFPA-13 (225 sq. ft.), are UL and C- UL listed as Quick Response Flush Sprinklers, and are approved for a temperature of 165 F/74 C. 2 Product Announcements NEW! Large Orifice and Extended Coverage Concealed Sprinklers Now offers you important new options for nearly undetectable fire protection. The breakthrough technology of Horizon Mirage concealed sprinklers has allowed to create new extended coverage (EC) and large orifice (LO) models that meet strict testing criteria for such usages. s new Model B- 2 Extended Coverage Sprinkler is available with a 3/4 NPT thread, which will be UL and C-UL listed as a 1) Quick Response Extended Coverage Concealed Sprinkler and 2) Standard Response Extended Coverage Concealed Sprinkler for light hazard occupants. A second sprinkler, also Model B-2, is available and is UL and C-UL listed as a Large Orifice Concealed Sprinkler. LOs are ideal for light and ordinary hazard applications. Both new models utilize the current Model B-2 cover plate and feature Mirage adjustability, which makes them relatively economical to install. Premiers Low-Cost Sprinklers in Black now offers an alternative to their standard black, extra large orifice (ELO) pendent sprinklers. Available in black teflon for several years, these sprinklers are now available in a lowercost black polyester paint, and are ideal for use in movie theaters or other areas where ceilings need to be dark. The black Model M Extended Coverage Light Hazard (ECLH) and Ordinary Hazard (ECOH) pendent sprinklers are thermosensitive, glass-bulb spray pendents with a corrosion-resistant polyester coating. They have a special deflector to meet either light or ordinary hazard density requirements for specific extended coverage areas, and their extra-large orifices produce the flows required at lower pressures than standard and large orifice sprinklers require. Both the ECLH and ECOH versions have a 3/4 NPT (20 mm) thread, and nominal 5/8 (16 mm) orifice. They are UL and ULC listed as Standard Response Sprinklers, and are New York City approved. To learn more, talk to your SupplyNet distributor. New RetroFit Cup Occasionally, when changing out recessed sprinklers, the recessed escutcheon cup will be too deep. To solve this problem, has released a new Retrofit Cup with a depth of 1-1/16. It comes in bright brass, Navajo white, and black, as well as in the standard polished chrome and white finishes. You can find additional information on this escutcheon on the enclosed price page 10, dated February, Wheatland Releases New Sprinkler Pipe SupplyNet is now stocking Wheatland Tube s new Mega line of sprinkler pipe, in addition to their existing line of Schedule 10 and 40 pipe. Re-Introducing Old Shields and Guards In the November 1998 issue of On-Fire, introduced new water shields and guards that passed the more stringent UL testing requirements. Now we would like to re-introduce our old water shields and guards. Though lacking the UL listing, these products maintain their FM and New York City approval, and are a lower-cost alternative to the new shields and guards. 3 ?? Ask the Tech Rep... Q. doesn t include a relief valve with its dry valve trim. Why?? A. When there is a potential to overpressurize the system, the relief valve protects the system and keeps this from happening. However, relief valves are only needed when using the older manual fill systems, which require an on-site person to regularly check the system and then manually refill it from plant air if necessary. Automatic air supplies, such as plant air or local supply air, require an air maintenance device which prevents the system from accepting additional air once maximum air pressure has been reached. Because of this safety feature, no relief valve is required. Q. Can the supervisory signal at the release control panel be a latching signal, or does it need to be self-resetting? A. There has been a change to NFPA 72 which states that supervisory signals are allowed to be a latching signal. This means that the panel can only be reset after someone has checked to ensure the problem that caused the latching supervisory signal to activate has been solved. This change has been accepted as a clarification to NFPA 72 and will be included in the 1999 edition of the manual. Notifier is currently working on developing a feature on all of their panels that will track the supervisory signal and not latch. Low end panels, including the RP 1001, PAR-3, and Firecycle III panels currently have latching supervisory circuits. Higher end programmable panels can be constructed to have either latching or tracking circuits. It is worth noting that the Firecycle III panel gives a ground fault indication if one of the two wires inside the aluminum sheath breaks. This will short out to the aluminum cable or another ground, but will not trip the detection system. Fireflex Recommends Detectors for use with TotalPac Systems in MRI Rooms. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) devices are being installed in ever increasing numbers of hospitals and health centers. The unique features of the TotalPac systems make them a very popular solution for the protection of MRI installations. However, the MRI machine itself creates an unusual set of issues for the contractor that must choose fire detectors to install. When in use, an MRI unit produces a large magnetic field which acts very much like an electromagnet pulling any metal object within its reach. For this reason, precautions must be taken to avoid any metallic components within the same room as the MRI unit. In addition, some smoke detectors will go off whenever the machine is activated, causing very annoying and unnecessary false alarms. Fireflex Systems, the manufacturer of the TotalPac Integrated Fire Protection System, presented this issue to the engineering department of System Sensor, who makes the brand of smoke detector recommended for use with the TotalPac system. System Sensor suggested using their 2 or 4 wire direct fire detectors, models 1400 and 2400, in MRI rooms. However, models 1451 and 2451, which are normally used with the TotalPac system, should not be used in this application, as they contain a Reed Switch test magnet that will cause them to activate every time the MRI unit is fired. This same problem will occur with all Duct Detectors, as well as with the Intelligent Line of addressable detectors. The TotalPac Integrated Fire Protection System has long been the system of choice for fire detection in MRI rooms. Providing contractors with recommendations on the proper equipment to use in combination with the TotalPac system will ensure that the fire detection problems that can be caused by electromagnetic fields don t occur. Alarm Valve Pilot Operated Pressure Regulating Valve ILBP System Drum storage of flammable liquid groups 1B, 1C, II and IIIA has long been limited to two drums high with water protection at a.60 density over 3,000 sq. ft., or foam system protection at.30 density over 3,000 sq. ft. But extensive testing proves that s Low Flow foam system enhances a standard sprinkler system so that at the same density (.60 gpm) storage height can safely be doubled to four high. And, even with existing piping at.45 density, the Low Flow foam system allows you to stack drums three high. Bladder Tank AR-AFFF and AFFF foams are fast-acting synthetics designed for use in systems to provide the best possible fire control over most types of flammable liquid hazards. AFFF is available in 1% and 3% concentrates, and AR-AFFF is available in two 3% x 3% types. s integrated foam/water systems include the Low Flow Wet Riser, the only bladder system FM approved for closed head operation with an in-line balanced proportioning (ILBP) method. Price Increase at Anti- Seize Technology For the first time in many years, Anti- Seize Technology has increased their prices for their TFE pipe thread sealant. Nibco Price Increase Nibco has just announced a price increase effective April 1, The cost of all bronze gate, globe and check valves will rise by 5%.
