2 CSUN is Like a Small City A population of nearly 39,818 students and close to 4,299 faculty and staff A Residential community of 3,287 24hr. Police operations 19,933 incidents in hr. Communications Center 8,246 calls for service, calls, 214 blue light phone activations. A network of over 90 emergency blue light phones, including 4 TTY call boxes and 252 CCTV security cameras CSUN Police respond to: all criminal incidents including sexual violence crises and disasters medical emergencies and vehicle accidents alcohol related offenses persons of concern

3 About our Department. Full-service police department 28 sworn State police officers who are vested with full law enforcement authority Accredited Law Enforcement Agency (IACLEA) since 2008 Provide 24-hour patrol of all university property and surrounding areas Respond to all requests for police assistance-medical, fire, traffic, emergency Utilize a multi-dimensional patrol effort Services include: Traffic Safety Unit, Threat Assessment Unit, VIP Security & Protection, Livescan Fingerprinting, Notary Services

4 Police Jurisdiction The 353-acre campus of Cal State Northridge is the primary jurisdiction of the university police department. CA Penal Code 830.2(c) provides authority on state property and up to one mile beyond the campus border.

5 Crime Prevention Education Programs and Services S.T.O.P. theft deterrent and recovery program for laptops and other electronics Bicycle Registration free program that increases return of property to rightful owner if stolen and recovered Matador Bicycle Compounds free access-controlled compounds decrease chances of bicycle theft Presentations and safety workshops in classrooms, for student organizations, sororities/fraternities, etc. on alcohol and sexual assault prevention education, personal property theft, programs/services offered by CSUN Police Services RAD - Rape Aggression Defense for Women & Resisting Aggression Defense for Men

6 Emergency Preparedness Campus wide training provided Resident Advisors, Community Directors and other housing staff are trained in emergency preparedness: Earthquake response during and after Fire safety response Active shooter response Hazardous materials response Evacuation drills are held each semester in the dorms

8 Matador Patrol Personal Safety Escorts Group of approximately 30 students (paid, volunteer or internship positions) Specially trained to provide safety escorts using bikes, carts and foot patrols. Available Mon. - Thurs. from dusk to 11:30pm Between 10,000 15,000 safety escorts provided each year. Request a safety escort using the CSUN smart phone app.

9 Building Relationships with Student Residents Since 2005 Community Policing Team a two-officer team responsible for patrol of the University Park Apartments community, Wednesday Saturday from 6pm to 4am. Police Substation located south of UPA 14, the police substation provides basic police services for the convenience of students.

10 Housing Perimeter Security The perimeter gates are locked between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. daily. Community service assistants staff four entrances to confirm residency of students and process guest registration; security guards check vehicles entering the complex: Lindley Avenue Lassen Street Zelzah Avenue UPA 15 Vehicle entrance gates close at 7:30 p.m. Residents only parking available in G8 surface lot, G9 structure and F9 surface lot. Housing Shuttle runs Mon. Thur. until 10pm; Fri. until 5pm *Route is adjusted during gate lock down

13 Our Use of Technology Through the CSUN mobile app, students have access to many police services, such as: o Calling CSUN police o Requesting a safety escort o Filing a police report o Links to sexual assault resources and literature Through the emergency notification system, parents may obtain emergency messages. Your student will need to add your telephone number to emergency contacts in the mynorthridge Portal. On-line reporting via our website for misdemeanors such as bike theft, harassing phone calls, vandalism and identity theft.
