45 IN-HOUSE PROMOTIONS TESTING GETS P ERSONAL WITH ATS STAGEIT SIMULATOR 45 by Lauren Wheeler The story is all too common in fire departments these days: hours are cuts, resources are stretched and budgets are slashed to the bone. Although the ax may often fall on training, training officers, such as Jackie Byers at Woodstock Fire Department, are not at a loss for an economical training solution. We re not a big department and we don t have a big training facility with a burn building and all that. While nothing can replace hands-on training, this is one alternative that we can use. Byers is talking about the StageIT Emergency Response Simulator from Action Training Systems. Anything you can take a picture of, you can train with, he said. Byers has been with the Woodstock Fire Department in Woodstock, GA for 19 years. His department has encountered simulators before, including when he took the department s promotional test for captain eight years ago. The department hired a company to come in and do our promotional testing for us, Byers said. They had a simulator program and were supposed to base the testing on our department s man power and our trucks and all, but we d never seen the buildings they used and it was sort of different, not very realistic. Once Byers became Captain/Training Officer for the department, he wanted to find a way to keep their lieutenants and captains promotional testing in house. We got to looking around for ways to do it ourselves and make it better. That s when I ran across the StageIT fire scene simulator. In addition to saving the money spent on contracting with the previous company for each test, Byers can customize his simulations to his department. The greatest benefit about StageIT is you can use places in your own response area, Byers said. I take two or three pictures driving down our streets. I start with just a little smoke in the simulation, and then build in another stage where you see more smoke as it progresses. It s pretty neat, and you know the streets you re going down, where the hydrants are and it s actually realistic. Byers uses the StageIT simulator to take the officers through complex situations they could actually encounter during their service at the department. This last time I picked a house in this new subdivision and I used the real street address and everything. That way, they can go look at the actual house afterward. For each testing candidate, I show them the front of the structure and what s going on, Byers explained. If they tell me they re going to do a walk-around, I can show them each side of the building for 30 seconds. They ll see if anyone s hanging out the window or if any fire or smoke is showing on each side, and after four or five minutes, if they haven t done things right or they haven t attacked the fire here, we ll make the fire worse. Byers said that the chiefs were apprehensive at first about purchasing Headquarters station #14 and firefighters from Woodstock FD, Woodstock, GA StageIT because the initial investment sounded risky. It was a lot of money for us, Byers said grimly. The chiefs said, Are you sure about this? I told them we really needed it. Now, they love it, because we also use it for incident critiques. We used it a few times for highway accidents and recreated the scene to critique it and see what we did right and what we could have done better. It s been a huge benefit for our department. It has really saved us money in the long run, Byers said proudly. Now that I have the simulator, I can focus my training budget on other areas like hands-on and updating books in our library.
