22 22 EMERGENCY OPERATIONS Vehicle Extrication NEW EXPANDED SERIES! Vehicle extrication emergencies are a leading category of response for fire and rescue personnel. Responding to these incidents is inherently dangerous because of vehicle traffic and many other hazardous conditions. Both the patient and responders lives depend on solid, up-to-date training in incident management, basic operational procedures and knowledge of tools and techniques used to complete an efficient and effective extrication. It s critical that emergency responders are aware of hazards and how to control them at an extrication scene. Familiarity and knowledge of equipment use and of new vehicle technology is key to rescuer safety. To help instructors meet these challenges, we have expanded our Vehicle Extrication series with new programs on hybrid and electric vehicles, advanced steel and alternative techniques for situations when the team must extricate trapped patients without hydraulic rescue tools. This 10-title Vehicle Extrication series builds on the foundation of our existing seven programs, already a mainstay for training in vehicle extrication throughout the Fire Service. Teaches to the current NFPA 1001, 1006 and 1670 standards. Computer-Based Simulation Courses Each course in this series takes the student through the first critical minutes of the initial size-up of a fire scene relating to a particular building type. Students are presented with conditions and background information for an incident, shown a simulation of the incident including approach shots and a 360 of the building and then asked questions about their initial reports and actions relating to the incident. Four learning scenarios are presented per course. A fifth, testing scenario serves as the final exam and is scored and tracked in the Iluminar Learning Management System. Size-up starts with the receipt of the alarm and may be carried out many times and by many different individuals during the course of a fire. The responsibility for size-up initially lies with the first officer on the scene, although all engine company members need to be able to make a personal size-up of the fire situation. As higher ranking officers arrive, the responsibility for size-up passes up the chain of command. This series focuses on the initial size-up of an incident by first on scene personnel. 31 EMERGENCY MEDICAL 31 Emergency Medical Services Training Highly trained and effective emergency medical responders are now more important than ever. As the need for qualified emergency medical services expands, we are prepared with two EMS series to get you started. EMR Series Our award-winning Emergency Medical Responder series provides competency-based courses to prepare first responders for real-life emergencies. This series aligns with the National EMS Education Standard (NEMSES) developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to define the minimum level of competency that must be met by EMS personnel. This series of 25 titles pairs with a customized version of Brady/Pearson Education s industry standard Emergency Medical Responder: First On Scene manual, which includes instructor/student chapter references to Action Training Systems EMR series. ICP Series Our newest series, Infection Control & Prevention, gives instructors the tools they need to help meet the initial and annual training requirements in bloodborne pathogens training and infection control required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This series provides the most comprehensive training program in infection control and prevention available for classroom and computer-based delivery. Content is based on standards and recommendations from OSHA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA ) and the U.S. Fire Administration. EMT Series Coming 2014, our Emergency Medical Technician series will provide EMTs with the knowledge and instruction essential for performing life-saving medical interventions and transporting patients to the hospital. This series encompasses many of the same topics covered in the EMR series, but expands them to include the higher level of care and knowledge required of the EMT. This 27-title series is based on the NEMSES EMT-Level Instructional Guideline. Sign up on our website to be alerted as soon as programs in this series are released. 46 46 e-learning TEACH, TEST AND TRACK WITH ILMS SOFTWARE Chief Dale Scott & Deputy Chief Michael Richenberg from Neuces County Emergency Service District No. 2 Your training just became easier without compromising competency. ILMS Iluminar Learning Management System Version 2 WHAT IS ILMS? The Iluminar Learning Management System (ILMS) is a software platform designed to deliver ATS course materials and track student accounts and test results. Look at ILMS as an overall strategy rather than just a tool for education and training. As an educator/trainer, you are aware that learning management is an important part of the training process. With ILMS, that process is automatically integrated and your training program is simplified. As an instructor you are able to customize courses and control which video, training objectives, quizzes and tests are shown to your students, providing them with an interactive, competency-based training experience tailored to your curriculum. ILMS provides an automated learning evaluation process to measure the results of your students level of comprehension. Students scores, as well as the dates/times of testing, are instantly and automatically recorded into your systems database. Action Training Systems computer based training courses are the single best hands-on resource for training we have. Bill Johnson - Assistant Chief, Georgetown City Fire Department Innovative Training Systems for Emergency Responders

47 e-learning 47 TEACH Customize courses and tests for instructor-led classroom training, self-paced independent student study or for deployment in a mobile distance learning environment. The instructional design of ATS courses makes it easier to learn the material than it is to cheat. Engaging hi-resolution video immerses students in the demonstration of job skill requirements. Students are quizzed as they watch the video. If a question is answered incorrectly, the program stops, backs up and shows the video clip over with the correct answer. Students must answer correctly to move ahead. They can t continue in the course with a misconception. TEST Secure logins for each student. Control the use of pre-tests, final exams and customized questions you create to enhance your training results and save time. Let experienced personnel test out of courses when they demonstrate competency by passing pre-tests. Present the same course to rookies without a pre-test so they have to view all the course material. TRACK Student progress is tracked and recorded automatically into your own database. Reports on all student activity are immediately available. Sensitive training records are securely saved on your own system, not hosted at an outside location. Personnel that are interrupted while taking a course can pick up where they left off or start the course over from the beginning. With ILMS, we can assign the class to everybody and it s easy to track. We run reports to tell us who has and who hasn t had the training, and we can teach to the entire department without pulling a truck out of station and driving across town to the training facility, so now they can stay in service. 49 25 YEARS OF INNOVATIVE TRAINING: PARTNERSHIP OF ATS AND IFSTA/FPP STILL GOING STRONG 49 by Lauren Kula Wheeler On the eve of Action Training Systems 25th anniversary, the leaders of the International Fire Service Training Association and Fire Protection Publications agree that partnering with ATS was the right choice. Mike Wieder, Associate Director of FPP and Executive Director of IFSTA, was there the day the arrangement was made in 1988 and ATS produced the first video series to support the IFSTA/FPP manuals. I was not at an executive level at that point, but I know we decided to go with Action Training s business and we ve been with them ever since, Wieder said. I ve worked with the videos as long as they ve been here and they are well written, well narrated and they always match the points we are trying to make in our manuals. I remember early on, when they were working on the first scripts and I would do a lot of the reviewing with them, Wieder added, and everything s grown from there. They ve grown, we ve grown our organization and we re great friends and partners. Wieder is well known in the fire service as the most prolific editor in IFSTA s history. He also oversees the editorial curriculum and graphics unit with FPP under the leadership of Craig Hannan. ATS is a really good fit with our products, FPP Director Craig Hannan said. The quality and commitment to making sure the content is exactly what it should be is there. And it s not just the end product that matters: it s how you get there and how you treat the customer that s so important to us and ATS has those same values. Hannan has been the driving force behind many of the new innovations at IFSTA/FPP, including the launch of their ResourceOne learning management system and the release of their first manual available as an e-book, The Essentials of Fire Fighting and Fire Department Operations: 6th Edition. We ve really progressed quite a bit, Hannan said, not only in our processes but certainly in the delivery we have for our customers with e-products and how we focus our support materials for the student and the instructor. So it s been fun to watch how everything has evolved. ATS s 25th anniversary happens to coincide with the release of IFSTA s 6th Edition of the Essentials of Fire Fighting manual and curriculum. Hannan believes the changes to the new edition will be a big hit with both instructors and students. We ve designed the manual so that the student not only learns the material they need for the certification testing, but they also learn the practical application in the field, Hannan said. We ve also designed the curriculum so that the instructor really is involved in creating the best learning environment for the student. It s not a matter of throwing up a PowerPoint and reading it to the student anymore; it s sharing the experience and knowledge of the instructor in a discussion format and getting the student involved in the classroom. I also think our validation process is far superior to any of the other publishers, Wieder noted. The other publishers typically have a small group of people that review various chapters of the book, but none of them have a group of people that thoroughly read the entire book like our committees do. Both Hannan and Wieder agree that they see a bright future in their continued collaboration with ATS. I think it s a pairing of two great companies that are focused on the learning experience for the student, Hannan said. Through the expertise that Action Training has in video presentation, computer-based training and now online training products, the student can work through the lessons on their own time or they can be adapted as an extension of the instructional materials we provide. The pairing of our products is really going to be a win/win for the instructor and the student. And I think we re learning new things together with ATS, Wieder added, and that process will just strengthen the working relationship we have between our two organizations and find new technologies and new ways we can work together to meet the needs of the fire service five or ten or 25 more years down the road.
