49 25 YEARS OF INNOVATIVE TRAINING: PARTNERSHIP OF ATS AND IFSTA/FPP STILL GOING STRONG 49 by Lauren Kula Wheeler On the eve of Action Training Systems 25th anniversary, the leaders of the International Fire Service Training Association and Fire Protection Publications agree that partnering with ATS was the right choice. Mike Wieder, Associate Director of FPP and Executive Director of IFSTA, was there the day the arrangement was made in 1988 and ATS produced the first video series to support the IFSTA/FPP manuals. I was not at an executive level at that point, but I know we decided to go with Action Training s business and we ve been with them ever since, Wieder said. I ve worked with the videos as long as they ve been here and they are well written, well narrated and they always match the points we are trying to make in our manuals. I remember early on, when they were working on the first scripts and I would do a lot of the reviewing with them, Wieder added, and everything s grown from there. They ve grown, we ve grown our organization and we re great friends and partners. Wieder is well known in the fire service as the most prolific editor in IFSTA s history. It s not a matter of throwing up a PowerPoint and reading it to the student anymore; it s sharing the experience and knowledge of the instructor in a discussion format and getting the student involved in the classroom. I also think our validation process is far superior to any of the other publishers, Wieder noted. The other publishers typically have a small group of people that review various chapters of the book, but none of them have a group of people that thoroughly read the entire book like our committees do. Both Hannan and Wieder agree that they see a bright future in their continued collaboration with ATS. I think it s a pairing of two great companies that are focused on the learning experience for the student, Hannan said. Through the expertise that Action Training has in video presentation, computer-based training and now online training products, the student can work through the lessons on their own time or they can be adapted as an extension of the instructional materials we provide. The pairing of our products is really going to be a win/win for the instructor and the student.
