2 Introduction London South Bank University is committed to ensuring the health, safety and welfare of its students, staff and visitors. This is especially important in the event of a fire. The following tutorial will assist you in remaining safe from the effects of fire.

3 The purpose of this tutorial is to provide sufficient information to raise your awareness to keep you safe during your time here at LSBU. It is therefore vital that in the event of an outbreak of fire, you know exactly what to do, as fire doesn t allow thinking time and it certainly doesn t take prisoners! If you do not know what to do when fire breaks out, your likelihood of survival is considerably reduced. Please work through the following pages and take note of the information provided. At the end of this tutorial you will be directed to a website where you will be asked to take a short multi-choice test to check that you have fully understood the information provided. We hope you will find this tutorial interesting and worthwhile but more importantly, that you will never need to put this knowledge into practice!

4 If you discover a fire you should prioritise your own safety. If possible, operate the fire alarm via the nearest red Manual Call Point. When manually breaking the glass it will operate the fire alarm system so that everyone within the building is alerted of the fire and can also quickly evacuate. Manual Call Points can be found at varying points within long corridors, on staircases on all floor levels and adjacent to every door that leads directly to open air (exit doors). The reality is that when fire breaks out you have no safe time at all in which to wait until you start your evacuation, which is why you must leave the building as soon as the fire alarm sounds. Smoke is the biggest killer in fire situations.

5 Fire Action Notices are displayed campus-wide but particularly by entrance doors within large rooms as well as in corridors, staircases, public gathering and reception areas and by exit doors. These notices are especially important as they tell you what to do in the event of discovering a fire or on hearing the fire alarm operate. They also inform you of the emergency telephone number to be used to call the Fire Brigade which for LSBU accommodation is through the Security Control Room The Fire Action Notice will also inform you of the location of your Fire Assembly Point. When leaving the building it is important that you go straight to and remain at the Fire Assembly Point so that everyone knows that you are out of the building and from where you will receive further guidance as to what to do next. You should never re-enter an evacuated building until the Fire Brigade or the Fire Wardens tell you that it is safe to do so.

6 Fire signage is an important feature of our emergency escape in that it shows the direction of travel of the fire escape in reaching the building final fire exits leading to the Fire Assembly Point. Below are two examples of directional fire signage: When evacuating following a fire alarm and having left the building, you must go straight to the Fire Assembly Point. The sign opposite is commonly used and shows the position of the Fire Assembly Point. When arriving at this point you must wait there for further instruction as to what must be done next. Remember that you must never leave the Fire Assembly Point or return to the building until the Fire Brigade or the Fire Wardens tell you that it is safe to do so.

7 Fire Doors play a very important part in keeping the fire escape routes free from fire and smoke. They are very easily recognisable since they have a blue sign stating Fire Door Keep Shut. If a Fire Door is wedged open or is disabled resulting in it not closing on its own, in the event of a fire in the room behind, fire and smoke will quickly fill the corridor and may prevent the escape route from being used. As a result, anyone else who requires use of this same escape route may be trapped. It is for this reason that Fire Doors must never be wedged/forcibly held open in any circumstances.

8 Some access controlled doors are connected into the fire alarm system which means that when the fire alarm sounds, the locking mechanism will automatically release. In the event that a particular door fails to release or of need to gain access due to another type of emergency situation where the fire alarm is not operating, access through the door can be gained by breaking the glass where indicated, which will unlock it. It must be noted that when breaking the glass of the green box: It will only release the door adjacent to it It will not operate the fire alarm system.

9 LSBU operates a No Smoking Policy which states that smoking is not permitted within any LSBU premises. To clarify, smoking is not permitted: Within any LSBU building On the roof tops of buildings In external doorways or porches On internal roads, pathways or walkways running in between LSBU buildings The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) is also banned due to their close resemblance to real cigarettes. This policy is strictly enforced and any person who is found to be smoking within the areas described above will be reported and may have disciplinary action being brought against them.
