1 EMERGENCY EVACUATION & COMMUNICATION PLAN
2 Everyone in your family needs to be on the same page in case of emergency. Sit down together and decide how each member of the family will get in contact, where everyone will go, and what the plan should be. Keep this plan in every family member's personal bug out bag, securely stashed in your vehicles, and in your everyday carry bags. As this document will contain personal information, make sure it is secure from people outside of your group. EVACUATION PLAN STEP 1: Determine which disasters are most likely to affect your household STEP 2: Determine what route you ll take to get to your in-town and out of town evacuation locations. To simplify this process, use the Google map creation tool here: Plot the routes, print it out (3 sheets added to the back), and add it to this packet. Go over these routes with your group. STEP 3: Complete this checklist Teach children how and when to call 911 or your local EMS number for emergency help. Show each family member how and when to turn off the water, gas, and electricity. Make sure you have adequate insurance coverage for the threats you re most likely to face in your area. Show each family member how to use a fire extinguisher, and where it s kept. Find safe spots in your home for each type of disaster. Install smoke detectors on each level of your home, especially around bedrooms. STEP 4: Practice and maintain your plan Quiz your kids every 6 months so they know what to do. Conduct fire and emergency evacuation drills. Replace stored water every 3 months. Test and recharge your fire extinguisher according to manufacturer instructions. Test smoke and CO detectors monthly and change the batteries at least once a year. 2
3 DURING AN EVACUATION Listen to your radio or TV and evacuate immediately if told to do so. Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes. Prepare a set of bug out clothing that you ll put on immediately in case of needed evacuation (if time allows). Make sure to bring your bug out bags. Lock your home. If you re sure you have more time: Shut off water, gas, and electricity. Post a note letting others know when you left, and where you re going. PRO TIP 1: Use travel routes specified by local authorities. Don t use shortcuts as they may be impassable or dangerous. If you re facing a complete grid-down situation and there is a need to evacuate, use your own pre-determined routes outlined in previous steps. PRO TIP 2: Tune in to your local two-way radio channels 1-16 to listen in on local authorities and EMS. IMPORTANT INFORMATION In case it isn t safe to meet at your home, determine your neighborhood meeting place, regional meeting place, and your out-of-state point of contact. OUT-OF-TOWN CONTACT NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING PLACE: Home: Cell: REGIONAL MEETING PLACE: WORK INFORMATION WORK INFORMATION 3
4 PRO TIP: During a crisis, text messages might have an easier time getting through than phone calls. If you have access to a land line, even better. SCHOOL INFORMATION SCHOOL INFORMATION OTHER PLACES YOU FREQUENT OTHER PLACES YOU FREQUENT Notes: Notes: 4
