6 CHAPTER 9 FRE PROTECTON SYSTEMS SECTON 901 GENERAL Scpe. The prvisins f this chapter shall specify where fire prtectin systems are required and shall apply t the design, installatin, inspectin, peratin, testing and maintenance f all fire prtectin systems Cnstructin dcuments. The cde enfrcement fficial shall have the authrity t require cnstructin dcuments and calculatins fr all fire prtectin systems and t require permits be issued fr the installatin, rehabilitatin r mdificatin f any fire prtectin system. Cnstructin dcuments fr fire prtectin systems shall be submitted fr review and apprval prir t system installatin Statement f cmpliance. Befre requesting [mal apprval f the installatin, where required by the cde enfrcement fficial, the installing cntractr shall furnish a written statement t the cde enfrcement fficial that the subject fire prtectin system has been installed in accrdance with apprved plans and has been tested in accrdance with the manufacturer's specificatins and the apprpriate installatin standard. Any deviatins frm the design standards shall be nted and cpies f the apprvals fr such deviatins shall be attached t the written statement Permits. Permits shall be required as set frth in Sectin nstallatin. Fire prtectin systems shall be maintained in accrdance with the riginal installatin standards fr that system. Required systems shall be extended, altered, r augmented as necessary t maintain and cntinue prtectin whenever the building is altered, remdeled r added t. The insurance carner, the alarm cmpany, building wner/manager, and ther authrities having jurisdictin have been ntified. 6. The supervisrs in the areas t be affected have been ntified. 7. A tag impairment system has been implemented. 8. Necessary tls and materials have been assembled n the impairment site Emergency impairments. When unplanned impairments ccur, apprpriate emergency actin shall be taken t minimize ptential injury and damage. Alternative autmatic fle-extinguishing systems cmplying with Sectin 904 shall be permitted in lieu f autmatic sprinkler prtectin where recgnized by the applicable standard and apprved by the cde enfrcement fficial Where required. Apprved autmatic sprinkler systems in new buildings and structures shall be prvided in the lcatins described in this sectin. Exceptin: Spaces r areas in telecmmunicatins buildings used exclusively fr telecmmunicatins equipment, assciated electrical pwer distributin equipment, batteries and standby engines, prvided thse spaces r areas are equipped thrughut with an autmatic fire alarm system and are separated frm the remainder f the building by fre barriers cnsisting f nt less than -hur fire-resistance-rated walls and 2-hur fire-resstance-rated flr! ceiling assemblies Grup A. An autmatic sprinkler system shall be prvided thrughut buildings and prtins theref used as Grup A ccupancies as prvided in this sectin. Fr Grup A-, A-2, A-3, and A-4 ccupancies, the autmatic sprinkler system shall be prvided thrughut the flr area where the Grup A-, A-2, A-3 r A-4 ccupancy is lcated, and in all flrs between the Grup A ccupancy and the level f exit discharge. An autmatic sprinkler system shall be prvided fr Grup E ccupancies as fllws: 1. Thrughut all Grup E fre areas greater than 20,000 square feet (1858 m 2 ) in area. 2. Exceptin: An autmatic sprinkler system is nt required in any fire area r area belw the level f exit discharge where every classrm thrughut the building has at least ne exterir exit dr at grund level Grup F-1. Autmatic sprinkler systems shall be prvided in high-hazard ccupancies as required in Sectins thrugh General. An autmatic sprinkler system shall be installed in Grup H ccupancies Grup H-5 ccupancies. An autmatic sprinkler system shall be installed thrughut buildings cntaining Grup H-5 ccupancies. The design f the sprinkler system shall nt be less than that required under the Building Cde f New Yrk State fr the ccupancy hazard classificatins in accrdance with Table Where the design area f the sprinkler system cnsists f a crridr prtected by ne rw f sprinklers, the maximum number f sprinklers required t be calculated is 13.
