1 July 1, 2010 SANTA ROSA FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRE PREVENTION BUREAU STANDARD RESIDENTIAL FIRE SPRINKLERS NFPA 13R PURPOSE This standard shall cver the general design and installatin f autmatic sprinkler systems fr prtectin against fire hazards in residential ccupancies up t and including fur stries in height. Infrmatin cntained herein applies t typical instances and may nt address all circumstances. CODE REFERENCES 2007 Califrnia Building Cde (CBC) 2007 Califrnia Fire Cde (CFC) Chapter NFPA 13R, 2002 editin PERMIT(S) REQUIRED A Fire Sprinkler System Installatin permit is required. Categries and fee amunts are fund at: REFERENCES 1) Plan Review Checklist Fire Sprinkler Installatin NFPA 13R 2) Inspectin Checklist Fire Sprinkler Installatin NFPA 13R REQUIRED INSPECTIONS 1) Undergrund NFPA 13R, an inspectin f all undergrund, flush and backfill. 2) Overhead Hydrstatic Inspectin NFPA 13R, System shall be pressurized at 200 psi fr tw hurs. Gauge shall be marked upn pressurizatin. 3) Fire Sprinkler Final - NFPA 13R, A main Drain, Inspectr Test and final walkthrugh f sprinkler cverage shall be perfrmed. Inspectins shall be scheduled a minimum f 48 hurs in advance. Directins fr scheduling are fund at: PERMIT INFORMATION Fire Sprinkler Systems shall be designed and installed in accrdance with NFPA 13R, 2002 Editin. Wrking plans shall be submitted fr apprval t the Santa Rsa Fire Department befre any wrk is cnducted. A cmpleted Permit and Plan Review Applicatin Frm and fees shall be submitted alng with; Three (3) sets f plans. Three (3) sets f hydraulic calculatins that cmply with hydraulic calculatin requirements f this standard. Three (3) sets f manufacturers' material infrmatin sheets (cmplete materials submittal) fr sprinkler head, piping, fitting, hanger, earthquake bracing, hrn & strbe, valve, fire pump 2373 Circadian Way, Santa Rsa, CA Phne: Fax: Page 1 f 6

2 cmpnents, fire department cnnectin and any ther device being used. All licenses must be included with the applicatins. At a minimum submit the fllwing: A City f Santa Rsa Tax Certificate (may be n file) Current apprpriate Califrnia licensed Fire Prtectin Cntractr (C-16); Registered Fire Prtectin r Mechanical Engineer fr design. (stamped plans acceptable) Prf f wrker's cmpensatin insurance (may be n file) Plans shall include the infrmatin specified belw. Failure t prvide all f the required infrmatin may result in the plans being rejected. Rejected plans will be returned with a Plan Review Crrectin Frm. Review the frm and make the required additins/changes which shall be cluded fr identificatin. Prvide a legend t describe the additin r change. Allw ten (10) wrking days fr review f submitted plans. Any deviatin during the installatin frm riginally submitted plans requires Fire Department apprval. DESIGN AND SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS The intent f this dcument is t aid in the prcess f design and installatin f a fire sprinkler system. All new 13-R fire sprinkler systems within the jurisdictin f the City f Santa Rsa Fire Department shall meet all f the applicable sectins f the Santa Rsa City Cde and NFPA 13-R, 2002 Editin. PLANS Fr undergrund water main requirements, cnsult City f Santa Rsa Water n design/installatin guideline fr private undergrund fire service lines. Cntact the City f Santa Rsa Utilities Department (707) fr back flw preventin requirements and undergrund water main cnnectin and encrachment matters. The fllwing is a list f standard infrmatin that shall be included n yur plans - NFPA 13R Name f wner and ccupant. Lcatin, including street address. Pint f cmpass. Ceiling cnstructin. Size f the city main in the street, pressure, whether dead-end r circulating.and, if deadend, the directin and distance t the nearest circulating main, and the city main test results including elevatin f the test hydrant Make, manufacturer, type, heat-respnse element, temperature rating, and nminal rifice size f the sprinkler. Temperature rating and lcatin f high-temperature sprinklers. Number f sprinklers n each riser, per flr. Kind and lcatin f alarm bells. Type f pipe and fittings. Type f prtectin fr nnmetallic pipe. Nminal pipe size with lengths shwn t scale. Lcatin and size f riser nipples. Types f fittings and jints and the lcatins f all welds and bends. Types and lcatins f hangers, sleeves, and braces, and methds f securing sprinklers, where applicable. All cntrl valves, check valves, drain pipes, and test cnnectins. Undergrund pipe size, length, lcatin, weight, material, and pint f cnnectin t the city main; type f valves, meters, and valve pits; and depth at which the tp f the pipe is laid belw grade. In the case f hydraulically designed systems, the material t be included n the hydraulic data nameplate. Name and address f the cntractr. Plans must be wet stamped and be signed by the designer f recrd (installing cntractr r Fire Prtectin Engineer r Mechanical Engineer). The designer's name shall be clearly printed n the plans. The designer f recrd shall be respnsible fr the entire prject design - Title 24 CFC A SPRINKLERS Indicate the type, size, temperature rating, nminal rifice size and manufacturer f the prpsed sprinkler head(s) - NFPA 13R Submit the manufacturer specificatin fr every head t be used. Only new and natinally recgnized testing agency sprinkler heads shall be used - NFPA 13R At least three spare sprinklers f each type, temperature rating, and rifice size used in the system shall be installed n the premises with a wrench(s) and bx(s), at the lcatin f main riser, fire alarm 2373 Circadian Way, Santa Rsa, CA Phne: Fax: Page 3 f 6

4 PIPING cntrl panel rm and/r electrical rm - NFPA 13R A welder certificate presented t fire inspectr during the field inspectin is required and it shall be kept at the jb site at all times. The imprint f the welder's stamp shall be visible n the pipe during the inspectin - AWS B2.1. When using CPVC prducts, the pipe, fittings and adhesive cement shall be cmpatible and the installatin shall be per manufacturer's specificatin and prcedure - NFPA 13R and Where mechanical tees are used, the whle disc (cutut) shall be wired t the mechanical tee - NFPA 13R SEISMIC PROTECTION The fire sprinkler system shall be designed and installed t resist the seismic lad per NFPA 13 sectin 6-4 prtectin f piping against damage where subject t earthquake. Prvide cmplete details f seismic bracing with attachment cmpnents and fasteners verified by lad calculatins. Include the fllwing - NFPA 13R 6.6.6: The seismic lad: use NFPA 13, table r use the actual weight f pipes plus water t be braced (area f influence). Type, length and vertical angle f brace. Methd f attachment t building structure: include size f the structural member. The type and size f fastener. The earthquake bracing methd and its cmpnents shall be listed by a natinally recgnized agency. HYDRAULIC CALCULATIONS Hydraulic calculatin frms shall be prvided. 6 Valves that are lcked pen A lcal water flw alarm shall be prvided n all sprinkler systems - NFPA 13R Where a building fire alarm system is prvided, the lcal water flw alarms shall be cnnected t the building fire alarm system - NFPA 13R If prvided, Fire Department Cnnectin (FDC) shall be lcated n the address side f the building. The lcatin f FDC shall be visible frm bth street directins and free frm any bstructin (36 clearance minimum) including landscaping - Title 24 CFC and NFPA 13R FIELD INSPECTION The sprinkler system installed in accrdance with NFPA 13R shall be prperly inspected, tested, and maintained in accrdance with Title 24 CFC and NFPA 25, fr the Inspectin, testing, and Maintenance f Water- Based Fire Prtectin System, t prvide at least the same level f perfrmance and prtectin as designed. A 200 PSI hydrstatic pressure fr tw hurs is required fr all new installatin hwever if the new wrk cannt be islated frm the existing prtin, the entire system shall be tested fr tw hurs at 150 PSI minimum r 50 PSI abve static pressure, whichever is greater. Systems having mre than 20 sprinklers r having a fire department cnnectin shall pass a hydrstatic pressure test perfrmed fr the abvegrund piping system in accrdance with NFPA 13, fr the Installatin f Sprinkler Systems - NFPA 13R Systems having bth fewer than 20 sprinklers and n fire department cnnectin shall pass a hydrstatic pressure test perfrmed fr the abvegrund piping system at 50 psi higher than the maximum system pressure using the hydrstatic test prcedure specified in NFPA 13, fr the Installatin f Sprinkler Systems - NFPA 13R It is the respnsibility f the installing cntractr t ensure and prvide the accessibility fr the inspectr t cnduct the visual inspectin. N exceptin will be made.
