1 School of Fire & Safety, GSFC University Course Structure & Syllabus for Certificate Course in Fireman/ Firewoman First Month:- Fire Science: General Introduction to Science of Fire (Basics of Physics and chemistry). Introduction to combustion, types of combustion, what is fire, fire triangle and tetrahedron, Pentagon classification of fire, various types of extinguishing agents and their effectiveness. Include types of the fire to address method of extinguishing do and don ts. Jet fire, pool fire, fire after explosion basics. Fire Technology: Fire hose and hose fittings (includes various types of branches, collecting breaching, foam branches, inline inductor etc.) their use and maintenance. Management of Fire Station: Basic structure of Fire Department; Designations; Uniform and Significance; Administrative and Executive Duties and responsibilities of designations in Fire Hierarchy. Siren Code. Fire Prevention and Protection: Fire Prevention methods; Safety permits; various kinds of Permits; Hot work permit; Permit to work at Height/ Depth and Fragile roof; Electrical Isolation permit. Confined space permit, Line breaking permit; Types of patrolling required and checklist for the same. Fire Ground Operations: Mobile fire tender; Placement of Fire tender in case of Emergency, Crew formation, Wind direction; Safe distance; Hydrant to tank; Priming and Suction from open water source. Foam system, sprinkler system & its regular inspection and preventive maintenance to ensure. Fire water sump, pump rules, types of pumps, and diesel pump concepts. Practical 1: Aim Of Drill, Attention, Vishram, at ease, Left turn, Right turn, Rear turn, March forward. Practical 2: Hose Lifting drill & Hose Drill. Sign and signal used and use of whistle. Practical 3: Delivery Hose & Suction hose testing. Record Keeping and Maintenance of Fire Hoses Practical 4: Essential Components of Sprinkler system Model or Sketch of Emulsifier / Sprinkler system. Practical 5 : Formation of Fire crew and distribution of work in a group of Six, Putting on the Fire Entry and Proximity suit

2 Second Month:- Fire Science: Various terminologies commonly used i.e. temperature, heat, specific heat, flash point, fire point, ignition, combustion; Ignition- pilot ignition, spontaneous ignition, ignition sources; Types of combustion-rapid, spontaneous, explosion, Diffusion flames-zones. Fire Technology: Suction and Delivery hose, Hose reel hose, working with hoses, Storage and stowage methods, Hose binding, Care and Maintenance of Hoses, Hose testing and Record Keeping. Ladders and Extension Ladder; Breathing Apparatus sets. Management of Fire Station: Watch Room and Control Room; Procedures of Watch room and Control Room, Fire Bell and Fire indicative Alarm, Lay out plan and Detail Hydrant plan; Pumps and Pump House. Duties of shift telephone/control room operator. Fire Prevention and Protection: Permit Forms, Permit Issuer; Permit acceptor; Fire Safety Precautions. Development of fire incipient, smouldering, flames and heat stages, fire protection means Layout Sketching and identifying various elements. Fire Ground Operations: Fire in go down and stacks & chimneys, fire in chutes, fire in gangways and passageway, fire in critical process area equipment, fire in substations and switchyard, fire in flammable gases followed by leakage. Practical 1: Numbering, Formation of Squad, Dressing, Right dressing; Open Order march; Close Order March Practical 2: Hydrant Drill (Three Men & Four Men). Practical 3: Hose reel testing. Testing of Ropes and Lines; Record Keeping. Practical 4: Salvage equipments; Use of Salvage equipments during Emergency; Donning Equipments. Practical 5 : Communication system usage and utilization; Mock exercises Evaluation Component 1 (EC 1): Evaluation Carrying 20% of Total marks shall be conducted after two months of Course Commencement

3 Third Month:- Fire Science: Product of combustion-flame, heat, smoke. Detection and Detectors Smoke Detector, Heat Detector, Flame detector. Sprinkler and Emulsifier system, MCP, Gas Detection and measurement of Gas Concentration. Special kinds of combustion- Flash fire, Pool fire, Deep seated fire, Spill over, Boil over, Dust explosion, BLEVE, UVCE. Total Flooding and Clean agent Fire Technology: Handling multiple Emergency Calls, Optimizing Fire fighting means. Various types of fire fighting appliances their operation (i.e. water tender, foam tender, DCP Tender; rescue tender, hydraulic platform, turntable ladder, trailer pump etc). Management of Fire Station: Daily occurrence book and their importance; Log book, Fire Extinguisher Tags, History of Testing and Maintenance of Fire Extinguishers,Composition of extinguishing media, Hydraulic Test of Fire Extinguishers. Fire Prevention and Protection: Natural and manmade disasters, Disaster impact, response, restoration, rehabilitation, reconstruction, Emergency preparedness and response, Onsite and Offsite plan and their Updation. Fire Ground Operations: Collapse of structure followed by fire, fire in Shopping mall. Fire in hotels, fire in high rise building, Practical 1: Quick Marching, Slow March; Ceremonial Sizing ; Rehearsal of previous practical Practical 2: Pump Drill (Four men & Six Men) Repetition of past drills ; Rehearsal of previous practical Practical 3: Hydro testing of Various Equipments (i.e. Hose, Extinguisher etc); Rehearsal of previous practical Practical 4: Stretcher Model / Sketch; DCP Tender Sketch Practical 5 : Listing Down the Rescue methodology and arrange a mock exercise in a Group of Eight

4 Fourth Month:- Fire Science: Fire extinguishers their types, operation and maintenance. PPE and Self-contained breathing apparatus. Knots, Lines and Hitches. Fire Hazard and Fire risk, Fire load and load density; Means of Escape, Evacuation Time; Shortest route. Combat of Emergency Scientific methods; Wind side Lee Side; Wind Direction, Windsock, Marshalling Point. Fire Technology: Fixed Fire prevention and Fire protection(fixed fire protection systems, hydrant system, wet/dry riser, Foam Systems, Clean Agents suppression system ) Management of Fire Station: Fire Tender Maintenance Register, Pump and Centrifugal Pump Operation, Priming and methods of Priming, Cooling Methods, Direct and Indirect Cooling Fire Prevention and Protection: Contingency plan, Plan for Management of Change. Mock drills, Evacuation drills, Rescue of person from industry building, Assembly Point and observations, Fire Ground Operations: Fire in mobile LPG tanker, fire in ammunition depot, fire in LPG bottling plant, fire in Chemical industries and solvent plant, Fire in public places Practical 1: Salutation, Salutation with letter, Front Salute, Right Salute. Rehearsal of previous practicals Practical 2: Ladder Drill. Rescue Drill; Foam drill; Rehearsal of previous practical Practical 3: Extinguisher Checking and Maintenance. 5 Fifth Month:- Fire Science: Hydraulics and Water Calculation; Discharge and pressure requirements; Capacity of Water tanks of various shapes. Fire Technology: DOT classification of hazardous chemicals, TLV-TWA, STEL, HAZCHEM code. Salvage and Salvage techniques, Salvage equipments, Small Gears and their applications; Management of Fire Station: Testing of Equipments register, Hose and Hose Fittings, Couplings and Nozzles; Small Gears testing and recording, Breathing Apparatus Sets and their Testing. Shift handover take over methods; Carryover work, maintaining important checklists. Fire Prevention and Protection: Fire order and their updation. Disaster Management Plan and Local Crisis Group. GSDMA and NDMA. Care and Maintenance of Small Gears, Fireman Axe and Ceiling Hook. Fire Ground Operations: Fire in a railway station, handling medium and large number of commuters, fire in bus stand, taxi stand, bike stand. Fire in forest area. Practical 1: Reporting Activity, Blank File, Ceremonial Sizing, Rehearsal of previous learnings Practical 2: Breathing Apparatus Donning and Doffing, Extinguisher Drill. Revisiting previous practical lessons Practical 3: BA set Name and Function of parts; Checking, Testing Examination and Record Keeping; BA Set Control Board. Rehearsal of previous practical Practical 4: First Aid Techniques; Crash Fire Tender Sketch; Practical 5: List down the Fire prevention measures of Railway Stn of a Metro City. Inter State Bus transport of Metro

6 Sixth Month:- Fire Science: Fire Hazard and Fire risk, Fire load and load density; Means of Escape, Evacuation Time; Shortest route. Combat of Emergency Scientific methods; Wind side Lee Side; Wind Direction, Windsock, Marshalling Point. Fire Technology: First aid Techniques, Burn Injuries and Burn Management. Artificial Respiration; CPR etc. Various standards used in fire protection and prevention general introduction (NBC-IV, Indian standard, NFPA, OISD). Advanced Techniques in Fire Engineering Management of Fire Station: Importance of routine parade and checking of equipments. Requirement of Materials and requisition; Safety Stock; Material Inspection; Fire sub store management. Site Size up before and after arrival in Emergency situations. Fire Prevention and Protection: Petroleum Act and Rules, Central Motor vehicle act and rules. A 1948 and GFR 1963; PESO; DISH. Fire Ground Operations: Fire in airport, hanger, chemical lab, fire in hospital, fire in hotels. Airfield Crash tender and Rapid Intervention Vehicle Practical 1: Physical Trainings; Rehearsal of previous practical Practical 2: Rescue Drill, Knots and Hitches. Rehearsal of previous practical Practical 3: Inspection and Testing Of Fixed Installation ( Hydrants, Riser, Monitor, M V spray Foam system, Gaseous suppression system etc) Practical 4: Priming devices of Centrifugal Pump, Blower and Exhauster. Fireman Axe Sketch; Sketch of Turn Table Ladder Practical 5: Listing Down the Details of Airfield Crash Fire Tender; Rapid Intervention Vehicle Evaluation Component 3 (EC 3): Evaluation Carrying 50% of Total marks shall be conducted after Sixth months of Course Commencement

7 *Practical 5: Attachment with major fire brigades This Exercise will be after completion of six month in which student will have to visit industrial fire stations of repute Total Marks Theory: 100 x 5 = 500 Total Marks Practical s: 100 x 5 = 500 Practical Attachment and Visit to GSFC Fire: 100 Grand Total = 1100 Pass Class: 40% Second Class: more than 45% and less than 60% First Class: 60% or above Honours: 66% or above Distinction: 75% or above
