6 EXERCISE OBJECTIVES FOR CLASSROOM THEORY / DEBRIEF The objectives of this exercise were to: Check all that apply 1 Identify spill reporting requirements 2 Describe the general behavior of oil under an ice sheet 3 Describe typical containment and recovery tactics Locate WCSS s winter spill response 4 units (and other types), and process to obtain and equipment from WCSS Carry out a hazard assessment and 5 Identify a safety program to protect workers Determine the weight-bearing capacity of 6 an ice sheet Comments Slow, Floats, Globs J-Slot, drum skimmer, vac truck Acheson, Grande Prairie and Lloydminster Thickness, Gold s Formula 7 Describe how to locate ice slotting area(s) Current, flow, ice assessment 8 Determine ice slotting tactics based on the weight-bearing capacity of the ice sheet 9 Recognize the WCSS Oil Spill Contingency Manual 10 Recognize a basic ICS structure 11 Coop Objectives (if applicable) EXERCISE OBJECTIVES FOR HANDS ON TRAINING / DEBRIEF The objectives of the exercise were to: 1 Identify typical equipment required to respond to a spill on a water body with an ice sheet. Check all that apply Comments 2 Determine the amount of white ice and blue ice in an ice block, and calculate the weight-bearing capacity MESSAGE TO ATTENDEES: After participating in the 3 hands-on activities in the Coop Winter Exercise, attendees will be able to: a. Participate on a response team to an oil spill under an ice sheet. 6
7 b. Identify tactics to locate and recover accumulations of oil under ice upstream of the containment and recovery site. c. Provide exercise evaluation feedback. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Ice safety plan: remove tolerance from risk tolerance counter intuitive to chart info. * Leona updated the chart, the one we had was only showing for river flow the new one shows risk info for both rivers and lakes now.
