3 Welcome We are happy to present you with our catalogue for 2010/11. As usual, we are bringing you as our customer some unique plants to satisfy your demands. We work hard to ensure that the new plants we introduce to the market each year are tested in production and have positive appreciation in the modern marketplace. We also work to improve cost efficiency and promotion of existing lines which I hope benefits you and helps us develop strong business links for the long term. In recent years through the work in our own plant micropropagation laboratory we have developed our own R&D and breeding / selections programs. In addition to our own plant varieties we are working with breeding partners from around the world. These relationships are also valued by us and we are making the results of these relationships available to you. I am happy to say that so far this approach to our work and a great team at FitzGerald Nurseries is resulting in a lot of fantastic plant market opportunities in the future. 4 Grasses and grass like plants Having started many years ago with propagating some Carex oshimensis Evergold the propagation of grasses and grass like plants has become one of our main activities at FitzGerald Nurseries. By selecting a range of plants suitable for the garden, but also for patio containers and mixed planters and by continously improving and developping our propagation techniques this has become an important part of our daily work.

5 Acorus gramineus Ogon Carex brunnea Aureovariegata Acorus gramineus Ogon is a dwarf cultivar of the grassy-leaved sweet flag with linear fans of evergreen, pale green and golden leaves which emit a delightful scent when crushed. Ogon brightens up those shady corners in your garden, adds texture and color, but can also be used in mixed planters as long as the soil is kept moist. Carex brunnea Aureovariegata is an evergreen sedge with narrow, green leaves with a golden border. It has an upright growth habit and is compact which allows the use in smaller gardens and mixed planter containers. The flower spikes are dark red-brown in summer. Carex phyllocephala Whirling Sparkler Carex morrowii Fisher s Form Carex Whirling Sparkler is a striking member of the Sedge family with its cream striped leaves that give a sparkler shape at the tip of the stems. It is a clump forming sedge that prefers moist soil conditions in a sheltered and shady part of your garden. It is a low maintenance plant that is ideal for planting in large groups. Carex morowii Fisher s Form is a cream and green variegated form of the evergreen Japanese Sedge. It has a sturdy, compact, upright clump forming growth habit and displays greenish flowers in spring. Fisher s Form is an excellent edging plant for your garden border and performs also in mixed container planters. Grasses and grass like plants Carex oshimensis Everest PVR Carex oshimensis Everest can be used as a container and patio plant or as a filler plant with bedding and specimen plants. The distinctive white striped foliage and the healthy growth makes Everest also a superb ground-cover plant. It is easy to grow, low maintenance and forms a neat easily controlled mound. Carex oshimensis Evergold Carex oshimensis Evergold is a very striking plant when planted in patio containers, in groups or as a feature plant in your garden border. It provides year round colour with its distinctive gold striped leaves and it is also an ideal plant to use in planted arrangements on your patio. 2008/0470 Carex oshimensis Evergreen Carex oshimensis Evergreen is similar in growth, usage and cultivation to the well known Carex Evergold with nice, glossy green leaves. Carex oshimensis Everillo PVR Carex oshimensis Everillo with its lime green leaves which turn golden yellow as the season progresses adds a different touch of colour to your spring and autumn planter arrangements. It can also be used in your garden to brighten up those shady corners. Everillo is a fantastic evergreen foliage plant and unique in its colour category. Carex trifida Rekohu Sunrise PVR Carex trifida Rekohu Sunrise is named after the Chatham Islands known locally as Rekohu. This plant has an elegant arching growth habit and is ideal for planting in large groups and in patio container arrangements. It is low maintenance, colourful, fast growing yet compact and ideal for the modern garden. 2009/0615 Hakonechloa macra Aureola Hakonechloa macra Aureola with its arching golden and green striped leaves is a unique ornamental grass. It adds colour and texture to your garden and when the fine leaves are swaying in the breeze it makes an extraordinary feature in your garden border or patio container. EU

6 Ophiopogon japonicus Minor Ophiopogon japonicus Minor is the dwarf green Mondo grass. With only 5 cm in height and a spreading growth this is an ideal, evergreen ground cover plant for half shady and shady areas. It is also a very good edging plant for your perennial border and is best planted in groups. Ophiopogon planiscapus Nigrescens Ophipogon Nigrescens is a stunning plant with purple-green leaves that turn black when growing in full sun. It gives a spectacular contrast in the garden when planted in large groups or as part of a mixed planted arrangement on the patio or window box. A truly unique, versatile plant with the blackest foliage of all garden plants. Ophiopogon plan. Black Beard PVR 2009/1023 Pennisetum setaceum Rubrum Ophiopogon Black Beard is a much more vigorous grower than the common Ophiopogon Nigrescens with leaves up to 30 cm in length on mature plants. The increased vigour and suckering of Black Beard and the good hardiness make it a fantastic evergreen patio container plant in many regions throughout Europe. Pennisetum setaceum Rubrum is a very showy ornamental grass with graceful arching dark purple leaves and burgundy red nodding plumes. In our area it is grown as an annual plant for use in summer and autumn planters in combination with bedding plants. It is an upright, fast growing grass with up to 1.2m in height. Grasses and grass like plants Uncinia rubra Everflame PVR Uncinia rubra Everflame is the first new variety from the old favourite Uncinia unciniata Rubra and makes a stunning feature plant with its vibrant colour and neat clump forming growth habit. It is particularly spectacular at the front of the perennial border and as part of autumn/winter balcony or patio planter arrangements. Uncinia uncinata rubra Uncinia unciniata Rubra forms tussocks of deep reddish brown foliage all year round. It produces dark brown flower spikes in summer and has a compact, clump forming habit. It can be used in garden borders in combination with other sedges, but is also well suited for mixed planters. 2008/

7 Spotlight 100% Irish - Bred by Pat FitzGerald Here at FitzGerald Nurseries we are not only dedicated to select and propagate the best varieties from around the world, we also do our own breeding. It all started with a spontanous mutation I have found on Ceanothus. After isolating, propagating and testing the plant we finally were ready to introduce it onto the Irish market. Finding pleasure on this type of product development I have started to experiment with various different varieties and so selected a few of my own varieties over the years, some of which you can see on this page. Further time and effort will be invested in continuing this work for the future and I hope to be able to introduce other interesting varieties over the coming years for growers and consumers around the world.

8 Patio & Foliage Plants With an increasing trend towards creating outdoor living spaces on patios and balconys I have decided to select and build a range of plants suitable for confined spaces and growing in patio containers. It was important for me to select plants which show colour all year round, which are easy to grow and maintain, even for non-gardeners. They are also quite trendy and attract the interest of the younger generation.

9 Agave americana Canna TROPICANNA Agave americana is more commonly known as Century Plant. The plant forms a spreading rosette of blue-green leaves with a spiny margin and a heavy spike at the tip which can be removed. Agave americana doesn t flower in our region. It is native to Mexico and likes dry, sunny and warm conditions. Canna TROPICANNA is a multihued, tropical foliage plant that thrives in the garden as well as in containers. The colour range of the leaves goes from burgundy to red to pink, yellow, gold and deep green and it produces also bright orange flowers in mid summer. The rhizomes need to be over wintered in a frost free dry place. Astelia chathamica Silver Spear Canna TROPICANNA Black PVR Astelia Silver Spear with ist clean silver coloured stiff upright sword like leaves is an ideal fature plant all year long. Silver Spear is a very stylish container plant, especially when planted in conjunction with other dark leaved foliage plants, but it can also be planted in the garden where it tolerates a wide range of well drained soils. Canna TROPICANNA Black has shiny, purple, nearly black foliage and bright scarlet/orange flowers with a yellow spotted throat. Together with the other Canna TROPICANNA varieties this is an astonishing tropical foliage plant for your garden or patio container, but the rhizomes need to be over wintered dry and frost free. Patio & Foliage Plants Canna TROPICANNA Gold PVR Canna TROPICANNA Gold with ist bold striping of green and gold leaves completes the colour foliage range of the TROPICANNA series. And to top it Canna TROPICANNA Gold produces masses of bright yellow edged orange flowers throughout the summer. The rhizomes need to be over wintered in a frost free dry place. EU Colocasia Blue Hawaii PVR Colocasia Blue Hawaii is characerized by a combination of large green leaves with prominent bluish-purple veins, an undulation bluish-purple margin, matte finish and semi-glossy dark burgundy coloured piko and petioles (stems). EU Colocasia Diamond Head PVR Colocasia Diamond Head has large dark purple to black leaves with a spectacular glossy finish and a small circular shaped dark burgundy coloured piko and semiglossy dark burgundy coloured petioles (stems). PVR application under procedure Colocasia Hawaiian Eye PVR Colocasia Hawaiian Eye is characterized by a combination of large dark greenishpruple leaves with a matte finish and a small, glossy circular shaped dark burgundy coloured piko and semi glossy dark burgundy petioles (stems). PVR application under procedure Colocasia Hilo Bay PVR Colocasia Hilo Bay has large glossy, olive green slightly ovate leaves that are ruffled or corrugated in texture. The leaves of Hilo Bay have an undulating margin, dark purple petioles (stems) and they produce multiple secondary shoots that are attached to the mother plant on short stolons. 10 Cordyline australis Burgundy Spire PVR EU Cordyline australis Red Comet Cordyline australis Bugundy Spire is a trunk forming Cordyline with rich burgundy, very broad leaves. The basal leaves are retained for a long period of time making it an ideal plant for your patio container. It can also be used in the background of your garden border. Burgundy Spire is a vigorous grower and easy to cultivate. Cordyline australis Red Comet with its palm like, red leaves makes a fantastic feature plant in the garden or on the patio. Its upright growing habit makes it an ideal plant to use alongside sedges or other high contrast foliage and flowering plants. Red Comet is a more suitable selection of Cordyline for use in open garden positions. Cordyline australis Charlie Boy PVR EU Cordyline australis Sunrise PVR Cordyline australis Charlie Boy is a striking new variety for your garden or patio container. With its richly coloured leaves in burgundy and pink it is a sensational feature plant. In addition to that Charlie Boy is a tough and resilient garden plant. It has outperformed other varieties for its robustness, especially regarding trunk stability. Cordyline australis Sunrise with its vivid, shiny and colourful palm like leaves in pink and red is a stunning feature for your patio container or garden border. Sunrise looks great in a tall modern patio container as its foliage cascades elegantly over the edges of the container adding year round colour to your garden. Patio & Foliage Plants Cordyline australis Sunset Cordyline australis Sunset is a green leaved Cabbage Tree with a deep red flush to the base of each leaf and a pronunced red mid rib. Sunset is a good healthy grower and performs well planted in the garden and as a patio container plant. It can also be used for mixed planter combinations throughout the year. 2006/1887 Cordyline australis Torbay Dazzler Cordyline australis Torbay Dazzler is an eye catching foliage plant with linear green leaves with a stunning cream margins. This plant thrives in sunny sheltered parts of the garden and patio and it provides an ideal feature plant. Cordyline Torbay Dazzler is ideal for use as part of landscape planting schemes in coastal areas. Cordyline x banksii Renegade PVR Cordyline Renegade is a striking new variety with broad, dark purple, nearly black leaves and a glossy lacquered finish if cultivated in high light conditions. It is a compact, tight clump forming variety and an excellent choice for the modern, architectural looking garden. It can be used in garden borders and/or patio containers. Cordyline CARUBA Black PVR Cordyline CARUBA Black is an ideal plant for your mixed planter containers or summer bedding plantations. With its dark foliage and vigorous growth it can be easily incorporated in colourful flower or foliage compositions. It is also a nice patio container plant, but CARUBA Black needs a frost free, bright location to over winter. EU Cordyline Festival Grass PVR Cordyline Festival Grass is a most unusual multibranching Cordyline ideal for patio containers or garden borders. With its compact development and the glossy, red foliage Festival Grass adds year round interest to your garden containers. Mature plants develop sprays of white, fragrant flowers in summer. EU Cordyline Karo Kiri Cordyline australis Karo Kiri with its short spiky green leaves from the top to the bottom of the trunk is a most unusual looking variety. The architectural appearance of this extraordinary plant is ideally suited for your patio container or conservatory. It likes to grow in a sunny, but sheltered position. EU

11 Ensete ventricosum Maurelii Fatsia japonica Variegata Ensete ventricosum Maurelii is a very richly coloured cultivar and a magnificent summer foliage plant. Although it must be overwintered under protection it is completely wasted in a conservatory in the summer. This plant grows to its best shape and colour in a sunny, but sheltered position in fertile and moist soil. Fatsia japonica Variegata is a stunning architectural plant to have in your garden or large patio container. Slow growing and low maintenance Variegated Japanese Aralia is the perfect choice to lighten up a shaded spot in your garden. This Fatsia s large cream and green leaves supported on thick stems give an all year round tropical look. Fascicularia bicolor Libertia ixioides Taupo Blaze Fasicularia bicolor, originating in Chile, is a highly colourful plant with an exotic appearance producing metallic blue flowers on mature plants in the autumn. It will thrive in a sheltered sunny position growing in free draining soil. Fascicularia bicolor is an ideal plant for containers and gives great value winter and summer. Libertia ixioides Taupo Blaze is a stunning plant with narrow sword shaped leaves that present a riot of colour as temperatures change ranging from green to yellow, orange and red. The pure white star like flowers in spring followed by attractive orange/red berries in autumn ensure all year round interest. Patio & Foliage Plants Libertia ixioides Goldfinger PVR Libertia ixioides Goldfinger has narrow, sword shaped, golden striped, cascading leaves that present elegance to your garden. The pure white star like flowers in spring followed by attractive yellow berries in autumn ensure all year round interest. Goldfinger makes also a fantastic landscape feature plant in temperate climates.. Libertia peregrinans Gold Leaf Libertia peregrinans Gold Leaf has dramatically coloured foliage in autumn and winter. This species forms a clumping spreading habit and has spiky, stiff leaves with an orange midrip. Gold Leaf is an ideal plant for using in mixed planter arrangements. It will give you an outstanding, year round impact if planted in the garden. 2006/1426 Liriope muscari Moneymaker Liriope muscari Moneymaker is a versatile, evergreen plant with dark green, blade like leaves and vibrant, long lasting wands of violet flowers from September right through to November. Moneymaker is a nice container plant, but can also be used as a groundcover or in mixed borders. It is easy to grow and low maintenance. Liriope muscari PeeDee Gold Ingot Liriope PeeDee Gold Ingot is a plant that performs well in shady areas. With its bright chartreuse to golden, evergreen foliage and the purple lilac flowers in late summer this plant is a real stunning feature in your garden border or patio container. Musa basjoo Musa basjoo is the cold hardiest banana in culture at the moment which makes this plant suitable for the garden use in large parts of Europe, but it can also be easily kept as a container plant and over wintered in a conservatory. Musa basjoo is a fast growing, easy to cultivate banana and can fruit in Northern Europe. Phormium Back in Black PVR Phormium tenax Back in Black produces very narrow, black leaves and has a dwarf growth habit. This makes Phormium Back in Black a versatile plant for use in smaller patio containers, in mixed planters or as a nice filler plant in your garden border. Back in Black is tolerant to exposed windy sites on coastal areas /1021

Black Adder PVR EU Yucca Banana Split Phormium cookianum Black Adder with its dark purple leaves and pendoulous tips is a very striking and adaptable plant in large containers or in the garden. Black Adder will grow happily even on exposed sites and coastal areas without losing its appeal. It is also tolerant of many soil types from heavy to light sandy. Yucca recurvifolia Banana Split with its evergreen variegated and arching leaves looks graceful in modern containers. Banana Split also produces very attractive fragrant, white, bell shaped flowers on tall spikes in summer. Yucca recurvifolia Banana Split is an easy to grow, draught tolerant and low maintenance plant. Phormium Jack Spratt Yucca filamentosa Bright Edge Phormium Jack Spratt is a very dwarf variety of the New Zealand Flax. This evergreen plant has a very compact dense, clump forming growth habit with bronzebrown, sometimes twiseted leaves. Jack Spratt is ideal for use in mixed garden borders, patio containers or mixed planters in combination with other foliage or flowering plants. Yucca filamentosa Bright Edge is a striking Yucca with evergreen leaves that are edged in a creamy white to yellow colour. It is a smaller, stemless or clump forming Yucca which will send up a spike of white bell shaped flowers in early summer. Bright Edge is hardy in most of Europe and can be used in the garden or on the patio. Patio & Foliage Plants Yucca gloriosa Bright Star PVR Yucca gloriosa Bright Star is a bright colourful plant for your patio container or your garden border. The luminous golden and green colour of the leaves is not fading and with autumn on its way the edges turn dark pink. Bright Star also produces very attractive white, bell shaped flowers emerging from pink flower buds during the summer. EU

13 Spotlight New Zealand Natives As Irish climate has similarities to New Zealand climate and with a growing fashion for evergreen, colourful foliage plants for the patio container and the garden I have started to grow quite a few plants originating from New Zealand - the other green island on the other side of the world. Having found that those varieties are performing well in our nursery and that the trend for this type of plants is increasing we have build strong relationships with growers and breeders from there continously bringing new and unusual varieties to our Patio and foliage ranges.

14 Perennials To add to our grasses and patio plant selection I have decided to also include some flowering plants to our range and in order to do so I have selected a range of perennials for this purpose. These plants are selected for the attraction of their flowers in spring and summer but also through their form and foliage. These plants can be used for patio containers or mixed borders particularly in small gardens.

15 Agapanthus preacox Bluestorm PVR Agapanthus praecox Bluestorm is a very floriferous selection delivering up to 50 flower stems and more in his 3rd year of growth. The flowering period is from June right through to September. Bluestorm can be planted directly in the garden in milder areas or kept as a patio container plant and over wintered in a frost free, bright location. Agapanthus preacox Snowstorm PVR Agapanthus praecox Snowstorm is the sister variety to Bluestorm and as floriferous. It is producing numerous white flowers throughout the summer. Agapanthus Snowstorm can be used the same way as Bluestorm, but it is slightly slower to establish. Perennials EU Crocosmia Limpopo PVR Crocosmia Limpopo is a new, sterile variety of Crocosmia with dense heads of large, thick petalled, blowsy pink flowers with an apricot throat. It is a very vigourous grower and blooms from July right through to October. EU 9529 Crocosmia Okavango PVR Crocosmia Okavango is also a new, sterile variety with heads of large, rounded broad petalled peach coloured flowers from July to October. It is a vigourous grower, but starts a little bit later into the season than other varieties. EU Dierama Guinevere Dierama Guinevere is a perennial with clusters of pure white flowers along the arching flower stem in summer and graceful seed heads in the autumn. It is an elegant feature plant that prefers a sunny sheltered position in the garden, but it can also be planted in containers on the patio provided it is kept moist at all times. EU Dierama Merlin Dierama Merlin produces clusters of deep purple flowers along the arching flower stem in summer. It gives dramatic effect to large patio containers both in flower and when its graceful seed heads develop. This elegant plant prefers a sunny, but shelterd position and moist soil to perform best. Eryngium Jade Frost PVR Eryngium Jade Frost is an evergreen, most stunning perennial which thrives in hot summers. With its grey and cream variegated leaves and its amethyst blue flowers which stay attractive for a very long period this plants is a highlight in your garden or patio container. Helleborus ericsmithii Bob s Best Helleborus Bob s Best is a selection of Helleborus x ericsmithii from the well known UK based perennial specialist Bob Brown. The large, pink flushed, later white flowers arise in mid winter and persist until May. The serrated leaves are dark green. EU Kniphofia Rooperi Kniphofia Rooperi is a tall and late flowering variety with big, round, sunny orange and yellow flowers. It also has lovely autumn foliage colorations to add to its attractiveness. Kniphofia Wol s Red Seedling Kniphofia Wol s Red Seedling is a selection with narrow, red spiky flowers early in summer. It is very prolofic when established and stays small and compact. 15

16 Shrubs I am growing shrubs in my nursery for over 20 years and I am planning to do so in future, but I have changed the type of shrubs we are propagating at FitzGerald Nurseries over the years. Having started with the classical landscaping type shrubs at the beginning of our business we are now growing a selection of new, evergreen, compact and versatile shrubs with a structural feature which can be used in the garden as well as in patio containers.

17 Aucuba japonica Pepper Spot PVR Aucuba japonica Pepperspot is an extremly regulary fine and yellow spotted form of Aucuba japonica. With its compact, dense growth habit it is ideally suited for small garden spaces and patio containers. Pepperspot is an evergreen shrub demanding very little attention in culture to perform well. Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. repens Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. repens is a perfect ground cover plant. With its shiny evergreen foliage and its sky blue flowers in summer it is an all year round attractive plant. It is also low in maintenance and easy to grow. Shrubs UK7831 Ceanothus Tuxedo PVR Ceanothus Tuxedo is a truly stunning new garden plant suitable for borders, general landscape and hedging. Tuxedo will grow on exposed sites without losing its appeal and is tolerant of many soil types from heavy to light sandy. Of all Ceanothus varieties Tuxedo has the darkest foliage making it unique in the family of Ceanothus. Ceanothus Pershore Zanzibar PVR Ceanothus Pershore Zanzibar is an evergreen shrub with powdery blue flowers in May. The golden yellow leaves have a green center. This upright growing, medium sized variety is an ideal garden plant. It thrives in sunny, well drained locations in your garden. EU Choisya Aztec Pearl Choisya Aztec Pearl is a selection of the Mexican Orange Blossom with slender, glossy, dark green leaves looking a bit like the fingers of a hand. It produces clusters of pink-tinged, white and fragrant flowers in late spring. Aztec Pearl is a compact growing shrub ideally suited for your garden border or patio container. EU 6707 Choisya Goldfingers PVR Choisya Goldfingers is the golden leaved sister variety to Aztec Pearl. It has also slender leaves, but of a golden yellow colour and clusters of white flowers. It s a compact growing shrub for sheltered, but sunny locations in your garden border. Choisya White Dazzler PVR Choisya White Dazzler is a new evergreen, very floriferous Choisya selection, which produces clusters of small, white and scented flowers twice a year. White Dazzler grows to a compact, evenly branching evergreen shrub in your garden, but it also performs well in a patio container or as a small informal hedging plant. EU 5554 Choisya ternata Choisya ternata, the classical Mexican Orange Blossom, is an attractive evergreen shrub with fragrant white flowers. It is easy to grow and low maintenance and an ideal plant for your garden. It can also be used as a hedging plant and easily be trimmed to shape. EU Choisya ternata Sundance PVR Choisya ternata Sundance is a golden leaved, compact selection of Choisya ternata also with white, fragrant flowers. It can be used the same than Choisya ternata, but the plant stays more compact and smaller in growth. Corokia Sunsplash Corokia Sunsplash is a pretty yellow variegated evergreen shrub for all season interest and an excellent coastal shrub. Sunsplash can be clipped to shape, is very versatile and suitable for small hedges in mild areas or for patio containers. UK

18 Escallonia laevis Gold Brian PVR Escallonia Gold Brian has relatively large, evergreen leaves in a bright golden yellow colour. When the plants are showing their pink flowers in summer this is a quite extraordinary look. Gold Brian is a compact growing shrub which can be used in garden borders, informal or formal hedging and is ideally suited for costal sites. Griselinia Green Horizon PVR Griselinia littoralis Green Horizon, also known under its Maori name KAPUKA, is an ideal hedging plant. Green Horizon is especially ideal for coastal gardens and general seaside shelter hedging. This new selection has deeper green and glossy foliage compared to the commonly used Griselinia. Shrubs IR 244 / UK 4450 Lophomyrtus Black Pearl PVR Lophomyrtus Black Pearl has a compact growth and the leaves are round and shiny in a dark purple colour. The upright panicles of white flowers emerge in June. Sorbaria Sem can be used in gardens, rockeries, perennial borders or patio containers. It is good winter hardy. Viburnum davidii Viburnum davidii is a very classical evergreen shrub. It can be used as a ground cover plant or as a speciem plant in your garden or mixed border. South African plants being more tolerant to extreme weather conditions than often appreciated they grow well in most European climates.
