La m b l e y Nu r s e ry BULB CATALOGUE 2011

Lambley Nursery and Gardens We are now importing the best varieties of garden bulbs that the Dutch bulb industry has to offer. It is a long and expensive process. Some of these imported varieties are in this catalogue and many are being offered for the first time in Australia. Some varieties are in short supply so it would be an idea to order promptly. The bulbs in this catalogue are for summer dry climates and are not suited to coastal NSW north of Sydney nor most areas of Queensland, Most need a reasonably cold winter and a dry summer to do well. They do not need lifting each year and are best left to increase in the garden. BULBS FROM THIS CATALOGUE will be available from the beginning of February until the end of March. WEBSITE The Lambley website has a full catalogue of the plants which we have in stock. David Glenn s Garden Notes can also be found there. PACKING We take a great deal of care in growing, selecting, packing and dispatching our plants. Our policy is to replace plants which do not arrive in good condition. If there is a problem please let us know within 24 hours as we will not be able to take responsibility after that time. DELIVERY TIME We will get plants out as quickly as possible but we do get a lot of orders in at once so there may be some delay. Let us know if you need plants delivered by a certain time. 4 Allium Round and Purple Allium hollandicum Purple Sensation Botanical nomenclature can be eccentric. This Allium is a native of Iran not the Netherlands. It first caused a stir in 1988 when the Kew Botanic Gardens showed it at the Chelsea Flower Show. Easily grown and a good doer it is used widely in European gardens. The rich purple flower heads, the size of tennis balls, are carried on thin but sturdy 70cm tall stems during November. It needs a sunny open position. A 20cm spacing would be about right. $6.00 each 3 for $15.00 Allium Mount Everest A stunning new Allium hybrid, a cross between the Central Asian A. stipitatum and Southwest Asian A. aflatunense, with 90cm tall stiff stems topped by 10-12cm balls of white flowers. Easily grown if it s given full sun during winter and spring and kept fairly dry during summer This year we have good quantities of this newly imported bulb. Plant about 30cm apart. $9.00 each 3 for $ for $

Allium Pinball Wizard Hate the name but the plant is a good one. It s a new cultivar which has shorter flower stems, some 50cm or so, than others of its kind. The softly fragrant...globes of silvery lilac-purple. Are some 15 to 20cm in diameter. Unlike Allium giganteum this cultivar keeps its foliage up to and through flowering time. A terrific new addition to this exciting group of ornamental onions. Happiest in full sun and wants to be kept on the dry side during summer. $11.00 each 3 for $ for $90.00 Allium Round and Purple This is by a mile the best of its kind. Easier to grow and more floriferous than Allium giganteum, it has amazed us by its exceptionally long flowering period, its happy habit of producing, when established, more than one flower stem per bulb, its huge flower heads and long vase life. A much better variety than Allium Gladiator. Strong upright flower stems are from 90cm to 120cm tall more usually 90cm with us. A spacing of 30 to 40cm is needed. $11.00 each 3 for $ for $90.00 Allium schubertii The Pacific Bulb Society writes A fantastic, whimsical giant onion with flower pedicels of various length, creating a big spidery ball of blooms. The spherical flower head, half a yard across, is in bloom for a good six to eight weeks during the early part of spring. It does need some space, 60cm wouldn t be too much, and also wants to be planted in a sunny spot. The flower head sits atop a sturdy 40cm tall stem. $12.00 each 3 for $ for $

Allium peninsulare Peninsula Onion To my mind this is one of the best of the smaller growing ornamental alliums. A bulb of dry Californian and Southern Oregon wooded slopes, it is easy to grow in any soil which dries out somewhat during summer. 35cm tall stems carry an umbel of rich rose-purple starry bells. The foliage is narrow and low. Fairly new to cultivation in Australia. Happy in sun or light shade. 3 for $ for $40.00 Allium sphaerocephalon Drumstick Allium Criss and I first saw this growing in the garden at Charlston Farmhouse about 20 years ago. We use it in our double flower borders and the dry climate garden where, around Christmas and the turn of the new year, metre tall stems are topped by green golf balls which over a period of a week or so gradually turn purple. As the Drumstick Allium takes up little horizontal space we plant them to flower through perennials. Sun. 100cm x 10cm. 10 for $ for $50.00 h s b s s a l Arum orientale ssp sintenisii Cyprus Arum Lily Native to Northern Cyprus this flowers longer than any other Arum in our garden. It produces handsome arrow shaped leaves during autumn and flowers from early winter until October. These flowers, some 15cm long and held on 80cm tall stems, have a purple spathe and a black spadix. It s pollinated by fungus gnats here and has a faint smell of fermenting fruit. It tolerates some dryness but is best when watered a little during the hotter months. Sun or light shade.80cm by 60cm. $15.00 each 6 Lambley Nursery

Arum palaestinum This black flowered Arum has a quite pleasant smell described as similar to fermenting fruit in Peter Boyce s monograph. A native of Syria, Lebanon and Palestine it grows on dry hillsides and the edges of cultivated fields. It does well in our dry garden but grows twice the size in a well watered spot elsewhere. Earlier flowering than Dracunculus and a smaller plant, this Arum is happy in any well drained spot in sun or light shade. 60cm x 50cm $7.00 each 3 for $18.00 Asphodelus ramosus Branched Asphodel A southern European plant which grows in pine woods, olive groves and heavily grazed land from south west Spain to Greece. Sometimes evergreen but summer dormant here these last few years, A. ramosus makes 120cm tall branching spikes which carry hundreds of flowers, coffee coloured in bud opening to white stars narrowly striped coffee. In flower for a good eight weeks during spring, it is happy in sun or light shade. 120cm x 50cm. $8.00 each 3 for $21.00 Belevalia pycnathatha This is best described as a tall growing grape hyacinth with cone shaped flower heads. The 40cm tall stems carry flowers which are mid blue in bud and open to navy blue. It grows wild in the areas where the Kurds live in Turkey, Iraq and Iran. It will grow happily in the garden under deciduous trees or in the sun. 3 for $9.00 7

Brodiaea Allure There has been nothing new in this range of easily grown bulbs for many years. Lambley imported several new clones from Holland three years ago and finally after time spent in quarantine and acclimatising to the Southern Hemisphere we have enough to sell. Brodiaea Allure produces sky facing intensely dark blue waxy flowers from late spring into summer. This variety has been bred for commercial cut flower production. A good increaser. A sunny spot will suit it. 3 for $ for $25.00 Brodiaea Corrina Another new import from Holland. 50cm tall stems, carrying multi flowered heads of skyward looking star shaped flowers, each lavender blue lobe has a darker mid vein. The flowers open during late spring and look wonderful growing through low ground covers such as Convolvulus sabatius. 3 for $ for $25.00 Brodiaea For You We recently imported this taller selection, with flowering stems reaching 50-60cm. Long lasting umbels of soft amethyst pink flowers are produced during late spring. Any sunny spot in the garden will suit. Our first release of this beautiful new variety. 3 for $ or $

Calochortus uniflorus Cupido Cupido Mariposa Tulip The Californian genus Calochortus is one of the most beautiful of all the bulbous genera. Not difficult to grow if they are planted in a sunny well drained spot and kept dry during summer. C. Cupido is a new import and unlike many of its kin has a good bulb increase. Ethereal soft mauve flowers many to each bulb are produced during spring on 15cm tall stems. 3 for $ for $30.00 Calochortus venustus Butterfly Mariposa Tulip A variable Californian endemic which in this form has white flowers with crimson stippling at the base of each petal and a crimson blotch above the stippling. These exquisite flowers bloom late in the season from mid-november until mid-december. Like most Mariposa Tulips this species needs a sunny well drained spot in the garden which is allowed to dry out during summer. It grows 45cm tall and has up to a dozen flowers to each stem. $8.00 each Colchicum byzantinum From a genus of tough autumn flowering bulbs (and a few miffy spring flowering species) which suit our climate very well. They flower, make their leaf growth and retire into dormancy during autumn, winter and spring. Colchicum byzantinum has several large, pink almost tulip like flowers and half a dozen bulbs will make a great display. 30cm x 30cm. Sun. 3 for $ for $

Chionodoxa Glory of the Snow Whilst these bulbs grow wild in alpine areas of western Turkey where it can be very wet in spring. They grow well enough here tolerating dryness as long as they are planted under deciduous trees and shrubs or even under winter dormant perennials. They flower in late winter. As these bulbs should be left in the ground for many years they need to be given a spacing of at least 15cm, to allow groups room to build up. Chionodoxa forbesii This has beautiful true blue, white centred flowers on 15cm tall stems. I grow a patch of this under Salvia Superba in the dry garden and those visitors with eyes to see are charmed by it every August. 5 for $8.50 Chionodoxa sardensis During early spring, this little jewel from the Turkish mountains carries clear gentian blue, white eyed flowers, half a dozen or so to each 12cm tall stem. It grows well in the shade of an olive tree in the dry garden. 5 for $8.50 Chiondoxa forbesii Alba A good white flowered form on 15cm tall stems. It increases well. 5 for $ Chionodoxa forbesii Pink Giant The flowering stems grow about 20cm tall and the pink flowers are large for the genus. 5 for $8.50

Winter/Spring Flowering Crocus The following Crocus vary in flowering time from July until early September. We have planted them under perennials such as Salvia nemorosa and Origanum cultivars which are cut to the ground during late autumn. All the following are easy to accommodate and have the same cultivation needs. Plant the bulbs in a sunny spot about 5cm. below soil level in well drained soil. Crocus sieberi Bowles White Thought by many to be the most beautiful white spring flowered crocus, this cultivar was raised by E.A. Bowles in the 1920s. I grow this species in drifts under Salvia nemorosa clones which are cut to the ground in May. The crocus grows, flowers (in August) and dies down by the time the salvia is up and running in late September. Rarely offered in Australia. 3 for $ for $36.00 Crocus seiberi ssp sublimis tricolor A very handsome form which comes from two mountains in the North Peloponnese, Mt Chelmos and Mt Ziria. The flower has a distinct white band separating the yellow throat from the purple petals. Crocus sieberi is an easy species to grow and we have some large patches of it in the garden. 3 for $ for $

Crocus tommasinianus Crocus tommasinianus Winter would not be the same here without the flowers of this wonderful, easily grown crocus. Brian Matthews, in his monograph The Crocus, writes In parts of Montenegro and Hercigovina I have seen it growing so thickly as to colour the woodlands, like English bluebells. I grow it in the dry garden under salvias and toad flax which are cut to the ground in May. This crocus flowers in July. It self sows in the garden and as it flowers in three years from seed it soon makes a decent show especially as the bulbs increase freely too. Over the years European gardeners have selected quite a few different forms, six of which we offer here. All are beautiful. 6 for $ for $ for $50.00 Barr s Purple Large rich lilac purple flowers. Lilac Beauty This has starry pale lilac flowers Roseus The most nearly pink of all crocus...almost the colour of peach blossom also described as...cyclamen rose with a silver sheen Ruby Giant A rich purple-red form with a lighter throat. Whitewell Purple Purplish mauve flowers. Yalta A large flowered Janis Ruksans selection with silvery shaded outer petals and beautifully contrasting purple inner petals 12 Yalta

Barr s Purple Lilac Beauty Roseus Ruby Giant Whitewell Purple Yalta 13

Crocus chrysanthus Crocus chrysanthus The cultivars of this species are amongst the most handsome of all Crocus. They produce several flowers to each bulb which helps to give them a long season. Earlier flowering than the Dutch bred C. vernus hybrids, they are beautiful in form and intense in colour often with exquisite feathering on the petals 3 for $ for $20.00 Ard Schenk is a vigorous and freely increasing pure white flowered cultivar. Blue Pearl is a swooningly beautiful crocus with pale blue inner petals, a yellow throat and lavender blue outer petals. Cream Beauty has rich cream flowers Fuscotinctus has flowers of bright yellow with violet feathering on the backs of the petals. New import. Gypsy Girl exceptionally good doer with bright yellow flowers and rich maroon feathering. Prins Claus has startling flowers, white interiors with purple black white edged exterior markings. 14 Blue Pearl

Giant Dutch Crocus Selections Giant Dutch Crocus Selections These varieties have giant flowers almost the size of tulips. They flower late winter and early spring and will cope with more summer watering than most other crocus although they grow happily in dry conditions. They all make good pot plants and can be brought inside when they start to flower. 10 for $ for $ Crocus vernus Flower Record Glossy violet flowers. Crocus vernus Grand Maitre Violet blue Flowers. Crocus vernus Joan of Arc Pure white with contrasting yellow stamens. Crocus vernus Pickwick Creamy white flowers with purple feathering. Crocus vernus Vanguard Earlier flowering than others in the group with mauve purple inner petals and silvery outer. Crocus flava Yellow Mammoth Rich egg yolk yellow goblets. 16 Flower Record

Dracunculus vulgaris Dragon Arum A plant of hot dry Mediterranean sites making clumps of large dark green arrow shaped leaves during the late winter from which during late spring large purple-black, evil looking and evil smelling flowers are produced. This is quite happy in a dry spot under deciduous trees or any other part of the garden, sunny or lightly shaded, that isn t watered too much during summer. 80cm x 60cm. $8.00 each 3 for $21.00 Fritillaria michailovskyi I remember when this rare and extraordinarily beautiful Fritillaria was rediscovered (eighty years after it was first described), in North East Turkey and brought into cultivation in the UK some three decade ago. What a stir it caused. At Lambley I grow it, with other Fritillarias, in a garden of dry climate steppe and alpine plants. It grows about 15cm tall....two thirds of the flower nearest the stem is a rich purple maroon and the lower third is a vivid contrasting gold. Limit of one per order. $9.00 each Fritillaria uva-vulpis This species has done well in the thyme lawn. I planted 40 bulbs two years ago and this past spring had close to a hundred 35cm tall flower stems each carrying at least two purple brown, gold tipped, narrowly tubular bells. It does well in Europe because it doesn t mind moist soils in summer but it also does well in the dry garden here at Lambley. 3 for $ for $ for $

Gladiolus cardinalis hybrid This must have been given a clonal name at some time in the past as it has been grown for aeons both in Australia and overseas. One of the most beautiful of the spring flowering Gladiolus with large crimson-red flowers backed silvergilt and three broad, cream slashes on the lower petals. Easily grown in any sunny spot both dry and moist and generally escapes thrip damage. It grows 50cm tall and should be planted 10 to 15cm apart. 3 for for $30.00 Iris histrioides George One of the joys of winter, Iris George, with its rich plum-purple flowers, is a vigorous hybrid between Iris histrioides and I. reticulata. It increases well in the garden if planted in a well drained sunny spot which isn t too acid. A good handful of ground limestone per yard helps to keep the bulbs healthy. 3 for $12.00 Iris Katherine Hodgkin When I first saw this Iris flowering thirty years or more ago in Otto Fauser s amazing garden I was thrown by its strange, slightly off colour tones, creamy sea green with powder blue feathering and a yellow throat. Katherine Hodgkin is a hybrid between I. winogradowii, a superb species of Caucasian alpine meadows and Iris histrioides. Easily grown in sun or light shade and it doesn t require a summer baking. $8.00 each 3 for $

Iris reticulata Harmony Iris reticulata There can scarcely be a more beautiful winter flower than these iris which came originally from the wilds of Turkey, Iran, Iraq and the Caucasus. Given well drained soil, not too acid, (I add lots of lime to the soil before planting these bulbs) in a spot that dries out in the summer and catches any winter sun these heavenly flowers will do well. About 15 cm tall in flower and spacing of 10cm would suit. Alida Alida Light blue flowers with soft yellow markings. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 Harmony Rich blue flowers with prominent yellow markings. One of the easiest and most beautiful. 5 for $8.00 or 25 for $35.00 J.S.Dijt Reddish purple flowers with yellow markings on the falls. A beautiful little Iris. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 Purple Gem Deep plum-purple flowers with lighter veining Paghat s garden. Slim and refined in outline. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 J.S. Dijt Purple Gem 20

New Ixias from Holland A few years ago Lambley imported a selection of cut flower varieties of Ixia from Dutch bulb growers. They are all free flowering bulbs producing 50cm tall wiry stems covered with blooms. Happy in any sunny well drained position, drier rather than wetter, they will flower for several weeks from the end of October. 3 for $12.00 Ixia Blue Bird Ixia Mabel Ixia The Giant Ixia Venus 21

Ixia Moon Spot Moon Spot Corn Lily Moon Spot, the earliest flowered of the taller growing Ixias, is in full bloom by September. 100cm tall wiry stems carry dozens of large moonlight wan, maroon eyed flowers. It makes a fabulous cut flower lasting two weeks inside. 3 for $ for $27.00 Ixia paniculata One of my favourite South African bulbs, Ixia paniculata grows about 40cm tall here at Lambley but can grow taller in more benign climates. Its wiry branching stem carries up to 20 cream, crimson flushed flowers. The flowers have a very long perianth tube and, in South Africa, are pollinated by two species of long tongued flies. It s easily grown as long as it isn t cramped during the growing season. 40cm x 10cm. 3 for $10.00 Leucocoryne coquimbensis Blue Sun Lily From dry Chilean hillsides this is one of the most beautiful of all spring flowering bulbs. It makes a few very small leaves and 30cm tall, upright wiry stems which carry several upward facing, sky blue flowers. Needs a sunny spot during winter and spring and to be kept dry during summer. Best planted where it has no competition. The Blue Sun Lily flowers for almost two months. 5 for $ for $

Lachenalia orchioides var. glaucina Blue Cape Hyacinth There are eighty species of Lachenalia native to the Cape region of South Africa and many are very desirable garden plants not the least of them the Blue Cape Hyacinth. Purple tipped, soft blue tubular bells are carried on 35cm tall stems during spring. It is happy in some shade although a sunny spot will suit it too. Plant 20cm to 30cm apart. 3 for $ for $25.00 Lachenalia pallida Lemon Cape Hyacinth Primrose wan bells are held on 25cm tall stems. This species grows in large colonies both in the Northwest and Southwest Cape. It is an excellent species to naturalise in the garden as it builds up numbers quickly. It is happier in heavier soils rather than sandy soils but having said that it does well enough on sandy soils. A sunny spot suits it and a spacing of 20cm to 30cm will do. 3 for $ for $25.00 Lachenalia pustulata The specific name sounds like a mortifying ailment I suffered as a school boy but in fact it refers to the bumps on the leaves of some forms of this beautiful Cape bulb. L. pustulata is a variable species ranging in colour from cream, pink, blue and purple. The form Lambley is offering is mauve with deeper tips. It generally grows 25cm or so tall and as it builds up numbers quickly should be planted 30cm apart. 3 for $ for $

Muscari (Grape Hyacinths) I grow a fairly large patch of the common grape hyacinth, Muscari armeniacum, under old elms where the dark blue flowers make a great show for ages during late winter and spring. The following Muscari are less common but no less beautiful. They are happy almost anywhere there is good light in winter and spring, either in full sun or under deciduous trees and shrubs. Planting 30cm apart would not be too far as they soon make large clumps. Muscari azureum This grape hyacinth with its beautiful sky blue flowers was in bloom in our bulb field for more than four weeks early last spring. 15cm x 10cm. 6 for $ for $35.00 Muscari armeniacum Cantab A light blue form of Grape Hyacinth with all the virtues. Good for naturalising under deciduous trees and shrubs. 10 for $ for $40.00 Muscari armeniacum Baby s Breath...delightfully scented, palest blue flowers from green buds. It grows 15cm tall. 4 for $10.00 Muscari Dark Eyes has a two toned flower spike, dark blue below and sky blue above. 3 for $ for $

Narcissus Beryl I was given a pot of this, my favourite daffodil, about 35 years ago and it is such a good doer that we now have many thousands of them planted under some large Elms. Bred a century ago each bulb has up to three flower stems which bloom in sequence so that the flowering period is a good 6 weeks. The neat foliage doesn t make a mess as it dies off. It flowers in late winter and early spring and is equally happy naturalised under large trees as under shrubs in the border. 30cm x 30cm. 3 for $9.00 Narcissus x medioluteus (syn Twin Sisters, Cemetery Ladies, Loving Couples, Primrose Pearl ) This is the last daffodil to flower in the Central Goldfields of Victoria in bloom here at Lambley during late October and early November. It has gently coloured white and soft yellow flowers which stand up well to the warmer late spring days. It also makes a delightful, lightly fragrant cut flower. An ancient hybrid between N. poeticus and N. Tazetta it has naturalised in Europe as well as old cemeteries in inland Victoria. 3 for $9.00 Sparaxis Royal Purple An especially showy variety which has flourished in the dry garden at Lambley for many years. For a good four weeks, during early to mid-spring, rich, glowing purple flowers, each with a yellow throat, are produced five or six to each 25cm tall wiry stem. These bulbs are happy in any sunny or lightly shaded position. Numbers are limited this year. 5 for $

Scilla hispanica Spanish Bluebell Scilla hispanica is the easiest of the bluebells to grow in our conditions. Happy in large drifts under old elm trees here. It isn t particular as to soil. One bulb will soon build up to sizable clumps so it s better to give them some space. We find the distance between clumps should be 45cm or more. It grows 30 cm tall. 10 for $ for $ for $35.00 Scilla hispanica White City White City Spanish Blue Bell Lambley imported this fine clone from Holland 3 years ago. It s the best of all the white flowered varieties. Pure white bells are held close together on 35cm tall stems. White City is a commercial cut flower in Europe. Happiest in the shade of deciduous trees but grows well for us in our bulb field in full sun. A good bulb for naturalising as it bulks up quickly. Best planted 40cm apart. 5 for $ for $ for $90.00 Scilla siberica A bright, true blue, winter flowered bulb which associates well with Snowdrops in my garden. It s best planted where it will get some summer shade. A little summer watering doesn t go amiss. When happy it soon builds up good numbers. Up to five nodding flowers to each 12cm tall stem. Plant about 10cm apart. 5 for $

Tulips Each year Criss and I plant several thousand Dutch tulip bulbs. But these horticultural triumphs, the result of centuries of assiduous breeding in the bulb fields of Holland, are not the only tulips that grow in the garden here at Lambley. Wild tulips, native to the Central Asian steppes, the hills of Crete, the olive groves of France, the ranges of Kurdistan, the Taurus Mountains, the Hindu Kush, even north Africa, and all the wild places between, have made themselves at home here. Some species have settled into the dry garden and others have naturalised in rough grass. No matter where we grow them they are amongst the most admired and coveted plants in the garden. All the species listed below need much the same conditions in the garden. They prefer cool winters and hot dry summers and won t do at all in subtropical climates. At Lambley we plant the bulbs under perennials which are either low growing or cut back to the ground during winter as tulips make their foliage growth during winter and flower during the first half of spring. I personally think that the wild tulips do better if the soil they are growing in is covered by other plants during the heat of summer. We leave all the wild tulips in the garden and lift them only when they become congested which is about every ten years or so. Some groups of bulbs have been in the same spot for fifteen years. Our soil is naturally very acid, Ph 4.5 to 5, so we add dolomite lime or ground limestone every so often. Tulipa eichleri This tulip, from north west Iran and adjacent countries, is one of the largest flowered and showiest of all the wildlings. Anna Pavord writes in her book The Tulip that it has enormous, showy flowers... a clear bright crimson -scarlet with a brilliant sheen on the inner surface of the petals. A black basal blotch is margined with yellow. This evolutionary wonder is held on 30cm tall stems. Lambley recently imported this species from Holland. 30cm x 10cm. 3 for $ for $

This variable species, from the wild forbidding mountains of Central Asia, was introduced into cultivation during the last quarter of the 19 th century. Since then gardeners and nurserymen have made many different selections. Tulipa greigii is most easily distinguished by the dark markings found on its leaves. The following are all good doers and suitable for both the garden and pots. They grow to 30cm and are best planted 10cm apart. 5 for $10.00 or 25 for $45.00 Tulipa greigii Cape Cod An early flowering tulip which has yellow flowers with a red stripe on the outside of the petals and a black base on the inside of the flower. Tulipa greigii Red Riding Hood Anna Pavord writes in her book The Tulip Beautifully formed urn-shaped flowers of vivid scarlet with jet black bases. Dark spreading foliage is mottled with brownish-purple. Early flowering. Tulipa greigii Toronto One of the last to flower this multi flowered tulip has two or three flowers per stem. The flowers are salmonorange with pink undertones. Cape Cod Red Riding Hood Toronto 28

T. Odalisque T. montana T. praestans Fuselier T. praestans Zwanenberg Tulipa humilis Odalisque...deep beetroot purple flowers, yellow at the centre. A dwarf species from western Iran, Turkey, Syria and Lebanon. 3 for $9.00 Tulipa montana Richard Wilford in his indispensible book Tulips writes This really is one of the most alluring of the smaller tulip species. It will grow 20cm tall and has cup shaped blood red flowers. 3 for $ for $30.00 Tulipa praestans Fuselier This variety was given the Royal Horticultural Societies highest accolade, the Award of Garden Merit, in Up to seven...glowing orange-scarlet flowers are produced by each bulb although the number is more likely to be four. 3 for $10.00 Tulipa praestans Zwanenberg Tulipa praestans is native of the mountains of the southern Pamir-Alai in Tajikistan where it grows at altitudes up to 3000 metres above sea level. Anna Pavord in her book The Tulip describes Zwanenberg as having...particularly striking flowers of a rich, clear red, which open more widely than other varieties. A taller variety at 35cm. 3 for $ for $

T. saxatilis T. tarda T. turkestanica T. urumiensis 30 Tulipa saxatilis One of the three tulips to be found on Crete. It is stoloniferous running around freely when happy. It needs a good summer baking to flower well. The bulbs in our own garden often have three flowers to a stem. The green hanging buds opening to large upward facing purple-pink, yellow throated flowers. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 Tulipa tarda White tipped yellow stars on short stems, generally about 10cm tall, are produced sometimes half a dozen or more to each bulb. This tulip grows on...rocky slopes in the Tien Shan. It is very easy to grow in the garden. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 Tulipa turkestanica Whilst the individual flowers are quite small each bulb produces such an abundance of them that this easy tulip should be in every garden. White, yellow throated stars open quite early in September. Our form grows to about 20cm tall but flowering height varies with the season and the garden. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00 Tulipa urumiensis A dwarf flowered species which was first collected from the hills surrounding Lake Urmia in north western Iran about seventy years ago. It has never been collected again. Easy to grow, it is related to the much taller T. sylvestris and has the same green back to its clear yellow flowers. 3 for $9.00 or 10 for $25.00

Tulipa vvedenskyi Tangerine Beauty Endemic to the western Tien Shan mountain range where it was first found growing south-east of Tashkent, in hills above the Angren River valley, during the early 1950s. The exceptionally large, orange-red flowers are produced on 20cm tall stems. It has grown well in our thyme lawn for the last two years and is a good increaser. A spacing of a minimum 15cm is needed and this tulip does best in a sunny spot which dries out during summer. 3 for $ for $36.00 Urginea maritima Sea Squill A bulb from Mediterranean sea shores which flowers with us during late summer and early autumn. We ve had it growing in a neglected paddock where it has thrived without water for all of the past years of drought. The Sea Squill makes stiff thick strong stems up to a metre tall tightly packed on the upper half with two or three hundred ivory white stars. The winter spring foliage is handsome as well. Needs a sunny spot and let the bulb dry off in summer. Large bulbs. $10.00 each 31
