3 Florida Friendly Landscaping You don't have to be an expert gardener or landscaper to create a Florida-friendly yard. All it takes is a willingness to learn and a desire to build a beautiful yard that helps protect Florida's environment. Florida-Friendly Landscaping (FFL) means using low-maintenance plants and environmentally sustainable practices. Learn how you can have a beautiful landscape that could save you time, energy and money while protecting our future. There are nine principles: 1. Right Plant, Right Place 2. Water Efficiently 3. Fertilize Appropriately 4. Mulch 5. Attract Wildlife 6. Manage Yard Pests Responsibly 7. Recycle 8. Reduce Storm Water Runoff 9. Protect the Waterfront. You can learn more at Floridayards.org
4 Palm Trees Many home landscapes benefit from the tropical touch of a palm - and small palm trees go almost anywhere! Consider not only how tall but how wide a palm will fit in the area you are considering. Some palm varieties are self-cleaning, meaning when a frond is dead it'll fall off on its own. Browned fronds are feeding the emerging new frond. Some palms drop fruits - use these varieties in areas where you won't be walking. Palms with visible trunks and a bit of height go well with mid-size or small flowering shrubs surrounding them. More miniature palm trees, like the pygmy date, are best set off by low-growing shrubs or groundcovers. Alexander Palm Christmas Palm Foxtail Palm Pygmy Date Palm
