2 40 years of experience and knowledge go into every polytunnel In 1969 my father Peter Wolfenden, a dairy farmer from east Lancashire, came up with the idea of obtaining a sheet of polythene and putting eyelets in each corner so that bales of hay standing in fields could be stacked and covered, to stop rain damage before the farmers could get them undercover. Hence the name LBS - Lancashire Bale and Stack. The next development was to stretch this polythene, which in those early days was a very new and rare material, over steel hoops. These were among some of the very first polytunnels. LBS Polythene grew over the next 23 years with all three siblings of the Wolfenden family joining the company and branching out into different sides of the business. These established companies today form the LBS Group of companies which provides everything from a plant label to a polytunnel. In 1990 LBS acquired Northern Polytunnels. This was a company which had developed multispan polytunnels for commercial use. This strengthened our position within the market, making us one of the biggest manufacturers of polytunnels for the commercial market in the UK. We have been busy with our commercial range and the development of garden centre structures over recent years and when you visit a garden centre you stand a good chance of being in a NP structures canopy framework. Over the last 3 months we have been developing our new range of home structures, these bring together 40 years of design experience and parts from our tried and tested commercial ranges. 3 The reasons to buy a polytunnel from us We have combined years of experience and our state-of-the-art technology used for garden centre buildings to assess the wind and snow loadings for our polytunnels in certain parts of the country. Though a comprehensive set of structural calculations cannot be provided for a polytunnel structure, the map opposite shows our recommendation for whether you should choose 5ft or 6ft spacings. METAL PLATE TIMBER JOINTS On our door and door frames we are using our new corner fixing plates for extra strength and easier assembly. STRONG COMMERCIAL TYPE BRACKETS Our brackets are the same design as our commercial range which have been developed over the last 40 years with proven strength and durability. WIDE DOORWAYS All our range comes with 900mm wide door frame as standard. NEW HIGH SIDED DESIGN All our structures have 1mtr straight sides with 6ft working height within 1 ft 6 (457.2mm) at each side. Polythene Options Clear Polythene This is a basic cover for general all round use and has a light transmission of approximately 91%. 180mu (720g) UVI/EVA polythene is the least expensive in our range of polythene covers. Luminance THB-AF 200mu thickness thermal barrier film developed to achieve better control of summer temperatures by reducing the proportion of short wave infra-red light. High thermicity maintains overnight temperatures and high diffusion provides a more uniform light distribution reducing the risk of scorching. Luminance THB-AF has a light transmission of approximately 90%. An anti-condensation additive reduces the formation of droplets on the polythene which can drip onto plants and can also reflect incoming light. Politherm Plus Politherm AF was introduced into the UK over a decade ago, and was the first film to successfully combine excellent mechanical strength, heat retention and long lasting anti-fogging properties into a clear, high light transmission film. It has established a deserved reputation for early crop condensation to spread out on the film surface. This reduces the risk of water dropping on plants and also leads to higher light transmission - water droplets on the film can reflect back up to 15% of incoming light. Politherm Plus now has a new UVi system which gives broad band absorption of ultra-violet light. This has been shown to assist in the control of spore production of botrytis and downy mildew. Broad band UV absorption also affects insects as it blocks out wavelengths of light which are important to insect vision. Therefore aphids and whitefly infestations can be inhibited, together with the disease which they may carry. Online: 03

It is attached to the top surface of the hoop prior to putting the cover on, to create a gap between the metal hoop and the polythene cover which prevents heat build up and prolongs the cover s life. Our new Alitrap roll up blind enables you to roll it right up to the top for access to the polytunnel, or roll down the top section to the, centre of the door for ventilation with simple but effective fixing brackets. 5 nline... Base Rails Timber Base Rails Base rails vastly reduce the amount of digging required, as there is no need to dig a trench completely around your tunnel. Manufactured from 3 (75mm) x 1 1 /2 (40mm) Tanalith treated timber with 2 rows of 3 /4 (19mm) x 1 1 /2 (38mm) timber battens secured with our tried and tested heavy duty brackets. Single Alitrap Aluminum Base Rail Manufactured from our single Alitrap aluminum fixing system with PVC fixing inserts, secured with our tried and tested heavy duty brackets. Anchor Plates When a base rail is used these save the need for concreting the foundation tubes into the ground, ideal if concrete can t be used on an allotment. Roll Up Curtains Roll up screens are used in conjunction with side ventilation kits. They create a roll up curtain internally that enables you to close off the ventilation. We use a commercial type gearbox and drive tube which gives you the opportunity to control how much ventilation you require. In addition we also sew PVC strips on to the ventilation netting at ground level and down both ends to minimise cold air affecting your crops Crop bars These are designed to go across the width of the polytunnel at head height, fixing on all the internal hoops. They enable you to hang and support crops or baskets from the hoops. This option also adds strength to the structure for peace of mind in exposed areas. 12 A modular system developed to suit plots of all shapes and sizes. Easy to assemble cage and support system. Kit components can be assembled into fruit cages, archways, bean and pea frames and supports for sweet peas, kidney beans or raspberry canes. The Fruit Cage Our fruit cages were designed and developed in our workshop to accommodate the varying sizes of fruit beds. For greater convenience the structure can be bought by the piece or as standard sized kits, accommodating any requirements. The modular nature even means that pieces can be bought to sit in non-uniform spaces. The black side netting for fruit cages is a high strength 6 6 (2m) wide rigid polypropylene net with a 3/4 (19mm) square mesh. The top net is a dark green knitted mesh used by commercial growers, available in a range of widths from 8 2 (2.5m) to 65 (20m). Nets are attached to the framework with PVC ties, which allows the net to be removed during the winter months. Doors are supplied with hinges, special door fasteners and individual door uprights with keyhole fixing brackets. 14 Super Cloche Hoops With Extra Strong Footing Tubes The Super Cloche is probably the strongest cloche ever made... It is manufactured from aluminum pipe 1" (25.4mm) diameter with a 1.5mm wall thickness to BS 2989 standard. Also with foundation stand design, these frames stand very solid and very strong. The frame can be covered with various coverings including polythene, shade netting, bird protection netting and fleece cover. The system is very strong, simple to use and easy to transport. Designed to give long lasting, low cost protection. For ventilation simply loosen the sheet fixing band and slide the polythene up the side of the frame. Uses: Winter protection of nursery stock, forest nurseries, bedding plants, strawberries, courgettes, dwarf beans, peas, salad crops, cabbage, herbs, flowers and vines. Provides maximum crop protection on outdoor strawberries, lettuce, beans etc. A very economical way of protecting against late frost, wind and rain. Allows crops to be harvested significantly earlier. Cloche Hoops These Cloche Hoops are made from tensile steel wire which will not rust. They have an integrated eye within the wire for attaching twine when fastening the cloche covers down. The hoops are available in two sizes to make either a 30 (0.75m) or a 40 (1m) wide hoop - see diagram below. We suggest you space each hoop approx 2-3ft apart and use a wooden stake at each end of the cloche to knot your cover around. 16 Raised Beds What are Raised Beds? We designed our range of raised beds specifically for both garden and allotment growers. The advantage of using a raised bed is that any area of land can be turned into a fertile growing environment. Using 145mm x 45mm timber, you can create the perfect growing area for various species of plants. By using our unique corner and side bracket system you can stack raised beds on top of each other, creating a raised bed as tall as you like. Stacked Raised Bed Using Our Specially Designed Brackets When comparing a traditional cultivation bed to one of our raised beds there are several advantages that the raised beds have! Good drainage As the soil level is above the normal height of the garden / allotment, any excess water will be drained, leaving perfect growing conditions for your crops Grow what you choose As a raised bed contains fresh soil, you can control the conditions of your growing area. This allows you to monitor the ph level, nutrient levels and even help prevent weeds, slugs etc. Protected plants As the raised beds stand out from the normal growing areas the likelihood of damage to crops being caused by footprints, footballs, window cleaners etc, will be dramatically reduced. The self-adhesive plastic strips attach to your polytunnel, creating a channel for rainwater. This can then be collected in containers positioned at the corners of your tunnel. The Tunnel Gutter can be applied straight away to both sides of any tunnel, using only the wipe provided and a dry, clean cloth. In the days of environmental awareness and hosepipe bans, the Tunnel Gutter provides a resourceful way to collect water for vital plant care.
