1 WEED NEWS Klickitat County Noxious Weed Control Board Volume 2; Issue 4 July 2015 I am what I am I crave for light But it is dark that I am It is life that I give And life that I take My personage is beautiful Nevertheless I chase away beauty My leaves grow heavy Drooping with death Not my death however But the death I create to obtain life I am beautiful but deadly And I permit life to only those who bring about death I am a competitor Taking away from those that were once native My roots run deep and I spread rapidly I inhibit growth in anything Not only can I kill those on the ground I am a predator and my prey is diverse Because my prey is diverse I lower diversity Sucking life is my main objective But it doesn't end there I can make one famished With a bite of my bud I can take away an experience With the sprout of my seed I can change the way the water flows With my simple existence I am picky So I make others compromise Making them re-inhabit HELP WANTED!!!!! 2 Scotch Broom, Cytisus scoparius Other known names -,broomtops, common broom, European broom, Irish broom, Scottish broom, Scot s broom Introduction Native Origin: Europe Scotch broom is considered a noxious weed in the Pacific Northwest as it outgrows all other vegetation. In Washington State it is un-lawful to transport, buy or sell all parts of this plant. It was introduced into the Pacific Northwest as an ornamental, and was used to stabilize eroded areas. It has now spread from British Columbia south into California. Scotch Broom, Cytisus scoparius Scotch broom is a deciduous shrub that grows to a height of up to 10 feet and nearly as wide. It bears branched stems which are green and ridged with long division bearing small alternate leaves. The leaves are arranged in a simple or trifoliate arrangement and are un toothed. Yellow flowers, which bloom from May- June are 3/4 long and pea shaped and strongly scented. In the fall these flowers give rise to small pea pods which ripen black. On warm days these pods open and release the seeds within. The 1/8 long, dark green seeds have very hard seed coats which enable them to survive as many as 80 years before germinating. Seeds can be carried by animals, machinery and people as they walk through the fields where this weed is established. Scotch broom grows primarily in open, dry meadows and along roadsides. As the seeds can be carried by moving water new plants are often scattered around aquatic areas. The seeds and flowers contain several toxic alkaloids and should not be eaten. Scotch Broom

3 Weed Control Methods Preventive: Tis the season. Preventive: Prevention is the first and, perhaps, the most important step in a weed control program. In addition, prevention is probably the most cost-effective method of weed control. Methods include: maintaining healthy pastures, using weed-free crop seed, weed-free manure and hay, and clean harvesting and tillage equipment, as well as the elimination of weed infestations in areas bordering cropland, and in irrigation ditches and canals. Cultural: Methods include, and are not limited to: Establishing and managing an adequate population of desirable vegetation to compete with the weeds; utilizing livestock (cattle, goats, sheep) when possible; mulching; burning; and even plastic weed barriers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mechanical: Methods include, and are not limited to: Hand-pull, hoe, mow and tillage. Biological: Biological weed control involves the utilization of natural enemies for the control of specific weed species. Biological weed control is never 100% effective, and can take 5 to 10 years for success. However, this method can be successful especially when combined with other control methods. Chemical: Always read the label before using any herbicide! Weed control with herbicides is an effective tool for many target weed species. However, there are several aspects to consider when choosing a chemical program. These include: ID of target weed; herbicide selection; timing of application; desirable crops or plant species near control areas; the number of applications per year, and the number of years for treatment. Sprayer calibration methods can be obtained from your local Extension office. Arrive with clean gear Use local or weed-free hay Stay on the trails Before leaving, remove mud and seeds PlayCleanGo.org

4 May we introduce you to our latest Weed Warriors!!!! What is a Weed Warrior?? Weed Warriors work with cities and communities to reduce the negative impact of invasive, noxious weeds in public places, like parks, Monte Pearson trails, and open spaces. Occasionally, reaching out to assist Brooks Heard is camera shy homeowners with issues on their own land. Want to be a Weed Warrior yourself??? Brooks Heard and Monte Pearson have taken the bull by the horns or should we say taken the knapweed by the tap root!!!! These gentlemen reside in Trout Lake and attended our first community meeting that was held at the USFS ranger station. Since then these two stepped forward and wanted to be involved. They have taken it upon themselves to get the word out, they have organized two Knapweed Knockout events. Monte and Brooks have made themselves available to answer questions and even help landowners who don t have proper equipment to treat the areas themselves. We thank you two greatly for your dedication and hard work!!!! Newest Weed Warrior is Dr. Rick Allen, thank you for joining the ranks. Do you want to join??? Do you live in an area that has noxious weeds? Community Service project idea needed? Want to get off the couch and get outdoors? Call us, we will work with you and the community to help spread the word about weeds and the resources available

5 What services, duties are accomplished by the Noxious Weed Control Program?? Detecting and responding quickly to new weed infestations and introductions. Surveying/mapping noxious weed infestation locations countywide. Offering landowners technical expertise to achieve high rates of weed control and voluntary compliance with the state weed law. Providing educational services to the public through informational workshops and publications. Conducting research on the best methods for weed control and eradication in Klickitat County. Assisting other agencies and non-profit groups with weed identification, control and eradication. Coordinating weed management efforts by working with volunteer and community groups. Klickitat County Noxious Weed Control Board 228 W. Main St., MS-CH-23, Room 230 Goldendale, WA Visit our booth at the Fair 8/20-23 there will be Bee-U-tify seed packets available.
