The District of Kitimat has renewed its partnership with the Northwest Invasive Plant Council (NWIPC). Early this spring NWIPC hired contractor Spectrum Resources Group Inc.

The areas being treated will include public municipal land or provincial crown land that has been identified as having an invasive species.

If the private owner does not want treatment the contractor will leave information on the particular invasive species identified with the land owner.

Early this spring NWIPC hired contractor Spectrum Resources Group Inc. to treat invasive plants in Kitimat in an effort to eradicate them. The areas being treated will include public municipal land or provincial crown land that has been identified as having an invasive species. If the contractor becomes aware of private land requiring treatment permission will be obtained from the land owner before application. If the private owner does not want treatment the contractor will leave information on the particular invasive species identified with the land owner. The stump will be injected or sprayed with herbicide Milestone (aminopyralid) or Vantage XRT (glyphosate). Signage will be posted notifying the area has been sprayed with the herbicide (noting the herbicide) and have the date the spraying took place. The herbicide is active for 14 days. Japanese Knotweed Treatment Within the townsite, herbicide will be injected directly into the plant. Japanese Knotweed sites outside the townsite will also be injected, unless spread over a wide area, i.e. up a logging road in high grass. Wide areas will be hand sprayed with backpack sprayer and signage will be posted. Signs will notify the area has been sprayed with the herbicide (noting the herbicide) and have the date the spraying took place. The herbicide is active for 14 days.

Burdock Treatment - Within the townsite plants will be removed and the ground will be hand sprayed with a spray bottle.

Burdock sites outside the townsite will also have the plants removed and the ground will be hand sprayed. If the plants are spread over a wide area, i.e. up a logging road in high grass the area will be sprayed with a backpack sprayer and signage will be posted.

Himalayan Balsam Treatment - The plant is pulled prior to flowering; herbicide is not applied. The plant and root ball of plant come out of the ground easily as one unit.
