SOLUTIONS TO COMBAT FOOD WASTE
One third of food produced worldwide is never consumed by people*. Because the reasons for food waste are varied and sometimes complex, Carrefour takes action at each stage of the product lifecycle. Whether upstream with our farming and manufacturing partners, in stores or among our customers, collective and individual solutions exist. Find out more about some of the solutions implemented by Carrefour and our partners to combat food waste. * Source: Food and Agriculture Organisation.
With our suppliers Extending product validity periods Carrefour is working to lengthen the life of its own brand products, by changing the use-by dates of some references after quality control: > extension of the minimum durability date (MDD) of 155 grocery products, including cereals, rice, dried fruits and stewed fruits, and removal of this label from more than 100 references, such as sugar, salt and vinegar; > extension of the use-by date (UBD) for more than 240 references, by 7 to 10 additional days on yoghurts, and by 2 to 8 days on dairy desserts. Major Suppliers Challenge After a first edition focusing on climate change, the second Major Suppliers Challenge organised by Carrefour is dedicated to food waste. The most innovative initiatives implemented by suppliers across the globe will be recognised as part of this challenge. Whether it s a new production method, new recipes, or the development of new distribution channels, the goal is to provide Carrefour s partners with support and to turn this partnership into a driving force for progress. More than 495 Carrefour-brand items have had their UBDs or MDDs extended Giving all products a chance Selling products with visual defects, which are as good and safe as their equivalents, at a discount price is what the Sans Form range in Brazil and Tous AntiGaspi range in France are all about. From fruit to vegetables, and fresh produce to cereals, this approach is applied to all departments, with products sold at 30% to 40% less. More than 100,000 Tous AntiGaspi camemberts were sold in France the first year, underlining the responsible consumption habits of our customers.
In our stores Giving products a new lease on life If products are damaged or over-ripe, there are some tasty ways to avoid wasting them. The logical thing to do is to transform them into something else. That s why store teams offer a range of ready-cooked food products and pre-cut products: leek whites, vegetable soups, pineapples cut in chunks, stewed fruit, fresh smoothies, etc. Healthy and good quality products at the best price! Offering discounts on products with short expiration dates When products in perfect condition are close to their useby date, the store s teams draw attention to the merchandise and offer customers a good deal: sound products at reduced prices, to consume the same or next day. From 30% to 50% off on products with short expiration dates
200 delivery lorries will run on biomethane in France by 2017 Mastering the various production stages Whenever possible, Carrefour gives priority to making all of its prepared food in-store. French butchers developped specific cutting techniques for meat and use traditional recipes to reduce wastage of raw materials. With the same goal in mind, in Argentina, meat is cut and prepared in a refrigerated warehouse and arrives in stores ready-for-sale. 66.6% of waste produced in our stores was recovered in 2015 Waste full of energy What can be done with products that have become unfit for consumption that cannot be sold, transformed or donated? Carrefour implements a range of biowaste solutions. In France, wilted flowers, unsold fish, badly damaged fruit or vegetables and kitchen waste are collected and transformed into biogas and then into biomethane. This is used to fuel the lorries that supply Carrefour stores with a minimal environmental impact. In Poland, this same waste is composted, providing fertile organic matter. Encouraging food donations By forming partnerships with local food aid organisations Food Banks, Secours populaire français, Restos du cœur and social grocery stores, etc., Carrefour s warehouse and store teams coordinate the donation of products on a daily basis that have been withdrawn from shelves but are still edible. In 2015, the equivalent of million meals were donated by Carrefour to food aid associations.
Among our customers Encouraging innovative solutions Carrefour fosters initiatives to combat waste in all of the countries where it operates. For example, French hypermarkets sell reusable Vegetabags, which slow the ripening process for fruit and vegetables and keep them crisp and fresh longer. Carrefour also draws on new forms of expertise by working with startups to develop innovative solutions in the field or through competitions and challenges. Helping customers move forward In every country, Carrefour provides tips, advice and practical solutions, in-store and online, to encourage customers to consume more responsibly. They include placing an emphasis on seasonal produce in stores, suggesting recipe ideas for waste-free cooking, stimulating the creativity of customers, and encouraging them to sort waste and recycle. Raising consumer awareness Carrefour uses several levers to provide consumers with waste-reduction solutions. In Romania, as part of a store awareness-raising campaign, customers are taught not to handle fruit because it makes it harder to conserve them.
Our commitment Reduce food waste* by 50% in 2025 compared to 2016 A collective challenge, solutions to share * Following the resolution adopted by the Consumer Goods Forum in For more information, visit theconsumergoodsforum.com.
Since 2013, Carrefour has implemented a global plan to combat food waste with support from the company s business lines. Symbolised by a bee, this programme aims to identify best practices and facilitates sharing tips and advice in order to combat food waste together.
