4 ARKWRIGHT CANAL capitalized on their vast experience when it came to installing this multi-flight helical staircase within a limited area of this London home. Working in collaboration with architect Claire Gasson RIBA, CANAL began by fabricating the structure in their Nottingham workshop to carry out the necessary tests. Once approved, the staircase was transported in sections to the property. The stairs are fabricated from mild steel, providing a smooth, curved profile while the timber treads were sourced to match the existing grain within the rest of this contemporary property. The profiled glass balustrade panels float above the staircase, onto which a sumptuous hand stitched leather handrail is attached. The mild steel structure underwent two powder coatings before a white soffit was fitted, complementing the elegant surroundings of the space. PALACE Located within the heart of London, this three story penthouse apartment required two bespoke feature staircases

7 PALACE Located within the heart of London, this three story penthouse apartment required two bespoke feature staircases to connect the open-plan living spaces. Floating staircases create a centerpiece in any property and allow the passage of light through a simple silhouette. The structure relies on a hidden steel structure within the walls and is adaptable for a variety of environments. Solid American white oak box treads were selected for both staircases, matching the surrounding timber in the apartment. These bespoke box treads incorporate specially formed LED light tracks, providing a soft glow, illuminating the surface beneath. CANAL completed the project by installing low iron, toughened glass balustrade panels to both staircases and in the channels of the first and second floor openings. WESTWOOD In collaboration with Michael Dolan Associates, CANAL designed, fabricated and installed a mezzanine floor area, incorporating two identical spiral staircases, connecting the two spaces.

Once the mezzanine floor was installed, both staircases were erected, centered around the stainless steel columns. Laminated, low iron glass treads provided uncompromised transparency and allow light to flow through the space. The satin stainless steel stringers were finished to create a flawless ribbon, while stainless steel riser bars and sandblasted nosing strips provided an elegant but safe solution on each staircase. 13 TUMI TUMI Luggage Company recently opened its flagship store in London, located on Regent Street. In collaboration with the award winning designer Dror Benshetrit and architect s Househam Henderson, CANAL constructed a staircase to act as a centerpiece for the store. The store was to house the company s first ever feature staircase, designed to reflect TUMI s signature highly polished aesthetics. The elegant design of the staircase creates a striking illusion in which the structure appears to float in front of the rear wall. The entire staircase is constructed from 20mm, mirror polished stainless steel, fusing a refined appearance with industrial strength. The same level of attention to detail was placed on the design of this project as with each piece of TUMI luggage. This is seen with the extensive use of mirror polished stainless steel such as the nosing fixtures on the tiled treads. The interior staircase incorporates stainless steel and glass to create an elegant feature in this residential property. The clean, sweeping lines of the staircase are enabled by two large stainless steel ribbons which suspend the entire structure. Bespoke laminated glass treads allow light to flood through the space and incorporate unique sand blasted details creating a safe, uncompromising design. Glass is utilized further on the staircase and first floor opening with profiled balustrade panels, coupled with a stainless steel handrail. 20 HUGO BOSS Working in collaboration with the architects, AAVA Ltd, CANAL fabricated and installed this dramatic helical staircase in the Hugo Boss Nottingham store. The fashion house required something that reflected the brand and CANAL set about this, tailoring each aspect of the design. The double stringer staircase elegantly sweeps from the ground floor to the first floor of the store, complemented by low iron glass balustrade. The entire staircase was painted black including a powder coated, black slotted steel handrail. A black soffit was fitted under the staircase, highlighting the smooth profile of the structure. This project marks the start of a relationship between Hugo Boss and CANAL who are now their architectural supplier for additional stores in the UK. Subtle details mark this staircase out such as beautifully formed solid American walnut box treads which were manufactured at a longer length so an end piece could be cut. The box treads were sleeved over the steel channels followed by glass balustrade panels, thereafter the walnut end pieces were married up to the original boxes in which they were cut. This ensured the grain of each tread follows through the glass giving the illusion that the wood passes straight through the balustrade. INDOOR&... Once the design was finalized, CANAL produced 3D models of the staircase in the drawing office in order to assess the structure down to the finest detail. Once this was complete, the structure was fabricated in the Nottingham based factory. The bespoke staircase is selfsupporting, enabled by a mild steel sub-frame. This frame was then clad in timber to match the existing timber floor and finished with a unique, flat stainless steel handrail. The staircase now stands proudly, providing access to the basement in the Cassina showroom where they showcase their most exclusive creations. 29

The hotel required a contemporary, multi-flight staircase providing access to the restaurant, reception, lounges and rooms. Particular attention was lavished on the material selection ensuring they would be able to withstand the high volumes of pedestrian traffic without any deterioration. CANAL fabricated steel pans for the treads which were filled with concrete and finished with tiles. The treads were supported on laser cut stainless steel stringers on both sides of the staircase. The balustrading incorporated 19mm toughened glass with a satin polished stainless steel handrail to complement the surrounding stainless steel features of this bespoke, contemporary staircase.
