Everyone has a dream home in mind, but few are able to follow through and build it with as much class and attention to materials as these homeowners, who recently finished their 2,500 sq. ft. dream home in Minto. With all their children grown and out of the house, the couple decided to build a new home with their own needs in mind. The result is an attractive one-storey, grey-brown stone country home on a stunningly-landscaped lot with acres of cornfields and farm country just out their back door. A wide, round driveway guides visitors to the front door with its huge squares of stamped concrete providing an elegant entrance to the home. General contractor, Sparky Bouwknegt of Sparky s Construction Ltd. in Listowel, says he chose to install two eight-by-eight-foot timber frame posts at the front door porch to give the home entrance the weight it deserved. They look like they re doing the job, he says. The timbers and wood used in the building came from Hamilton Wood Products. The masonry inside and outside the home is from Binnings Masonry, and the stone was supplied by Tri-County Brick. As you step into the spacious entranceway, your feet feel the warmth of sturdy honey-brown ceramic tiles with in-floor heating. The flooring throughout the home both hardwood and tile came from Conway Furniture, as did some furnishings J.J. McLellan & Son Plumbing & Heating installed in-floor heating both on the main floor and the finished basement level, plus the geothermal system. A large control room for the heating and cooling systems fills one corner of the basement and is a showroom of the latest equipment. This home was really fun to do, says Pamela McLellan-Zmija, a spokesperson for J.J. McLellan. There was a lot of custom work to meet the homeowner s customized plans. In addition to the heating and cooling systems, each of the home s five bathrooms have been individually designed using a variety of colours, styles and finishes for faucets, tubs, sinks, hardware and accessories. Building supplies are from Long s Home Hardware. The control room in the lower level also houses the wiring for the audio-visual system installed by Station Earth. The fully distributed audio and video system eliminates the unsightliness of having a satellite receiver at every TV. All equipment is centrally located in a heat-managed, surge-protected equipment rack. The systems are controlled from easy-to-use, intuitive in-wall touch panels and ipads. Programmed remotes also contribute to the elimination of clutter. There s also a media room with a large TV and surround system and an outdoor TV in the large exterior kitchen for when the action goes outside. It was an afterthought, the homeowner says about the outdoor cookery. I saw an outdoor kitchen at a house I was visiting and thought it would be great to have one for the family when they all visit. This is the first outdoor kitchen I ve ever worked on, says Sparky, who worked closely throughout the whole project with the homeowner and Designer Cheryl Lyn Morrison of Decorating and Design. The exterior kitchen is a large half-enclosed patio with glass on the north side to protect it from snow-belt winters, says Sparky. The enclosure was supplied by Grey Bruce Patio Enclosures Inc. A fireplace keeps the space warm through the cool fall weather. A comfortable sofa and chairs are nestled into the enclosed corner, while a dining table and chairs fill the middle portion of the patio kitchen. Furniture for the outdoor kitchen was purchased at Sherri s Living Large. A barbecue, bar, sink, fridge and ice-maker line the outdoor kitchen wall against the house. All the appliances are Jenn-Air with a copper finish. The homeowners chose a Winchester-grey coloured Trex treatment for the floors and Sparky says it is perfect for outdoor use because it s a composite material that won t shrink or expand as the weather changes. The spectacular landscaped rock fountain in the backyard was designed and built by Brett Garniss of Great Canadian Landscaping. The property was fashioned to have a downward grade as it goes into the backyard, providing an elegant view from the patio. Contractor Sparky says that when he originally dug for a nine-foot foundation, the homeowner thought it was too high. But when we pushed the dirt up against the house, she could see it was perfect for what she wanted, he says. 5 *40 Years in Business And what they wanted was to have a wonderful gathering place in the basement that resembles a cosy neighbourhood bar with its game tables, large bar area, and big screen TV nook with comfortable chairs and a sofa. Two small guest bedrooms are also in the basement. An extra-large master bedroom, complete with fireplace and his-andher bathrooms is located on the main floor. The lighting, provided by Lites and installed by Ken Black Electric, includes small and medium-sized pocket lights in rows within the kitchen and living room ceilings. Lantern pendant lights hang over the Z-style kitchen island and dining-room table while matching wall sconces complete the look. This home isn t your standard design, says McLellan-Zmija. That made it really interesting for all of us. Morrison says another challenge was the intricacy and craftsmanship of the granite countertops, which were manufactured by City Stone. It was a very complicated kitchen with all those angles, she says. Immink Finishing & Custom Cabinetry Inc. supplied the kitchen cabinets and the bar downstairs. Morrison worked with the homeowner from drawing the plans on paper to hanging the art on the wall. She credits Sparky with always giving her the heads-up as the project progressed. When you work with so many sub-trades, you have to be prepared with the design elements before you think it s necessary, she says and this home is a shining example of hard work and organiztion coming together.
