Pegler; Fairchild Publications, USA,2001 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is the third of four interior design offerings within the Display + Design Program. It is designed to address the exhibit/trade show design, and store planning needs of Visual Presentation Professionals. Related topics such as basic lighting design and an introduction to working drawings are included to expand the student s interior design knowledge base on a practical level. Much as in the preceding two interior design offerings, a great deal of emphasis is placed on visual design communication and applying the design process to solving space planning & detailing problems. Thus, each Design Project includes a research, component and emphasizes critical thinking. Recognizing that success in the design workplace often depends on teamwork, and that employers list a good team player as an invaluable job skill, this course aims to strike a balance between individual, creative design exploration, and group collaboration in problem solving. 1

2 LEARNING OUTCOMES After successfully completing this module, the student shall: be able to produce professional-quality conceptual design visuals for trade show booths and/or exhibit designs; be able to assess and interpret programming information pertinent to store planning or store renovations of up to 200 sq. m. in area; be conversant with the principles & design processes involved in basic store planning; be able to select & present suitable finish materials & colour schemes for store makeovers; be able to propose suitable custom store merchandise fixtures, with drawings to dimensioned detail level; be able to propose lighting design improvements in terms of luminaire selection & placement for trade show/exhibit design or store makeovers; be able to illustrate lighting design concepts via reflected ceiling plans; have an increased appreciation of the role of teamwork in solving design problems. 2
