Although there are multiple names for several of the buildings included in this collection, and multiple ways to name the image itself, the alternate names can be included in other fields in thie database. It is more important for this, often less descriptive or useful to the user group, field to represent the unique identifier. Function: The user group will be studying the relationship between the function of buildings and the architectural style, therefore it is important to include a unique field for this purpose. This field is repeatable because many buildings serve more than one function, and moreover, many of the uilding in this collection have served multiple purposes over time. This field is required because every building has a function, addmitadly, some more verifyable than others. Structure Details: This field is an all encompassing field that includes, but is not limited to, information about the building materials, the architectural attributes, architect, or other historically known information that relates to the physical structure and surroundings of each building. This field will also include known names, and variants, for each building not included in the descriptive image title. This field is repeatable because there is a multidtude of information specific to the structure, and many interpretations of what relates to the structure itself. The user group is studying both the cultural significance of these buildings, but also the architectural style, so it is important to include both aspects of information in this keyword-heavy field. This field is required because such information is known, and most important for our user group. Without details about the Structure at the center of each photograph, the user group would be unable to return useful results from our database. Building Era: This field is optional because the information is not known, and can not be obtained to an accurate level for all of the building structures. Although it is generally accepted that the style of Red Farmhouse such as the one included in this photoseries were brought to America and built by immigrants and farmers from Europe in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, it would not necessarily be helpful to include all of these centuries in our data. To much information that is not specific can cloud our data set. When the information is known, especially to a specific degree as it is for the Taj Mahal, or for Taliesin West, than this information will be included. As a data entry rule, the century will be represented both as the apreviation, and year range. (ex. 20th century, or ) Other years as they are known are also to be included, the year construction began, finished, or when the sight

6 opened, in whatever style that may mean (to the public, or the people moved in) will be included. The user group is studying architecture over time, and will most likely need to make comparative decisions for different building in different time periods. Including general time descriptors will provide a broad range of data for the user to use in determining how to compare results, or search for information. This field is repeatable to insure that as many varations of the period of time, or times, that best represent the building's cultural or historical significance will be included in the data entry. This field is important for the user group because a secondary aspect of their course will be to study architecture over time and across cultures. Having a field that forces this information to be included, to the degree that is accurate and credible, will make sure that there is a well rounded database to search for this purpose. On the user-interface side of this database, it would be beneficial to provide the opportunity to search by a range of years so that the users may specify their timeframe. This field remains repeatable so that is a keyword search is done with year-related terms, the available material would still appear in the results because it was included in the data entry rules. Location: The location of each building plays an important role in determining the cultural significance of each structure. Indeed, the the location of a building may play a role in the function the place serves for the community, or inhabitants that use the building. As much as is possible the information in this field will include the village, city, town, state, nation, and continent. Beyond that general discriptors about the location or whereabouts of the building will be included in this field, such as neighboring towns and villages, geographic landmarks, or even other landmarks that can be identified with the building in the picture. This field is repeatable because there are multiple values that need to be included, and ways to express those values. This field is required because the information is known about all of the photographs, either due to worldwide knowledge of the place, or because of the preexsisting information provided on Flickr.
