Course Reading List and References: A History of Interior Design by John Pile & Judith Gura

Romanesque churches General Appearance: Dark, solemn spaces Exterior is simple, severe Modest Height Horizontal lines Multiple Units

Dark, solemn spaces Romanesque churches and castles were dark, with few openings. Wars and invasions were commonplace, so windows and doors were kept to a minimum. With stone and masonry buildings, buildings were safe from fire and invaders, but required large supports for the weight of walls and vaults.

Dark, solemn spaces

The new concept of stone vaulting required stronger walls for support. Because of the lack of building knowledge statics, it was necessary to build strong, thick walls with narrow openings.

Exterior is simple, severe: A combination of masonry, arches and piers are the basis of the Romanesque style. The main concept for buildings was the addition of pure geometrical forms.

Modest Height, Horizontal lines Romanesque churches have an emphasis on horizontal lines, similar to those of Greek & Roman public buildings.

Horizontal lines Romanesque Church Vertical lines Gothic Church

Multiple Units Several geometric forms make up the building, rather than one shape. This changes in the Gothic era to one large cross shape.

Romanesque style Multiple units Several shapes Gothic style one large space

Pisa Cathedral

Pisa Cathedral the interior, with rows of columns and flat ceiling recalling the Early Christian Basilican church.

Pisa Cathedral Over the crossing or intersection of nave and transepts is an elliptical dome of later date.

Pisa Cathedral Externally, blind arcades, built in stripes of red and white marble, ornament the facades which also have small open arcades, one above the other, producing a fine impression

Romanesque in England: Peterborough Cathedral

Cathedral built between A.D and The interior is considered to be the finest in the Norman style next to Durham. The nave is covered with a painted wooden ceiling of lozenge shaped compartments, ornamenting what is probably the oldest wooden roof in England.

The nave aisles only are vaulted

St Albans Cathedral formally known as the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban, is a Church of England cathedral church within St Albans, England. At 84 metres (276ft), its nave is the longest of any cathedral in England. St Albans Cathedral England, demonstrates the typical alterations made to the fabric of many Romanesque buildings in different styles and materials

St Albans Cathedral The Wallingford Screen of c the statues are Victorian replacements ( ) of the originals, destroyed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when the screen itself was also damaged.

Romanesque in German: Maria Laach-Abbey, Germany. The abbey structure dates from between 1093 and 1177, with a paradisium added around 1225 and is considered a prime example of Romanesque architecture of the Staufen period. Despite its long construction time the well-preserved basilica with its six towers is considered to be one of the most beautiful Romanesque buildings in Germany.

Choose A or B A: Explain in details the forces and principles were shaping the Byzantine Architecture.. B: Discuss this statement (Byzantine architects invented a unique way of adjusting the circular form of a dome roof to a square or polygonal plan), use sketches to explain your answer.
