2 3 AMTRAK STATION Spring 2015 Austin, Texas Instructor: Mathew Leach This comprehensive studio project was based on designing an Amtrak rail-line which included a mixed use, social hub, in place of Austin s current Amtrak Station located on Lamar Boulevard. The studio was focused on the creation of a design which would be conceptually and visually stimulating while understanding thorough technical and safety construction methods. This design promotes the active nature of Austin, including open outdoor spaces within and even beyond the building structures, evoking a unique contrast on the site between interior activities and exterior while stimulating the ongoing movement in between. The roof structure became one of the most important aspects of the project from the beginning, because it was an opportunity for this social, transportation, hub to be a visual experiential focal point within the city of Austin. This was important because the current Amtrak station had been forgotten about amongst many Austin residence, despite being a site for mass transportation.

14 15 AUSTIN GREEN CENTER Fall 2013 Austin, Texas Instructor: Ed Richardson Located on South Congress in Austin, the Austin Green Center is a community center which aims to educate families about more sustainable lifestyles and promoting green practices. The Austin Green Center is also home to the Austin Energy Green Building Offices. With that in mind, the building s design was intended to promote an understanding of the site which the building is placed. A courtyard area was incorporated in the design of the building to promote an appreciation of the outdoor experience, even while moving inside. The courtyard was designed with just trees and shrubs, but has the option of including a garden or becoming an outdoor social place for the occupants of the building. The Green Center also houses a gallery, auditorium, and library. The intent for this mixed use social building was to provide an experience for people to be exposed to a more sustainable lifestyle.
16 Green Center 17 Final hand drawn sections. The two separate spaces are connected by a corridor which looks out to a courtyard space. And the West portion of the building has a saw tooth roof for sunlight to penetrate the space. Watercolor perspective was used to look at the potential material palette which would be included as the exterior of the building.
18 19 SOUTH LAMAR MIXED-USE HOUSING Spring 2014 Austin, Texas Instructor: Carmen Garufo This project was a mixed-use housing project that followed a collaborative urban re-design of Austin s South Lamar corridor. In studying the existing infrastructure, there was a significant detatchment from neighborhoods and public amenities. The primary intent of the redesign was to promote connections at an urban scale and integrate diverse communities. The redevelopment scheme was developed to increase green zones, consolidate parking, widen bike lanes and sidewalks, and improve bus stop infrastructure. The housing project was designed to incorporate diverse family types through apartment units as well as small town homes. There is a communal courtyard area as well as public amenities on the building facing South Lamar for the site to become a hub for the existing neighborhoods nearby.
20 Housing 21 The redisign of South Lamar creted various East-West connections that link corridors running parallel to each other. Allowing for an interaction between neighborhoods. The Project includes various unit types and large spaces for public gathering.
22 23 POETICS OF BUILDING Fall 2015 Goose Island State Park, Texas Design Excellence Instructor: Coleman Coker Collaborators: Kristin Ericson, Kamree Gonzales, Sean Kennaugh, Drew McMillian, Cory Olsen, Denis Piereschi, Christopher Salazar, Dominic Sargeant, Stuart Yancey This project was built in Goose Island State Park to accompany the previously made fire circle, as well as provide a gathering space for girl and boy scouts to eat and begin nature walks with the parks and nature interpreter. There is an informal room connecting the roof of the pavilion back to the natural live oak canopy of the park to form an uninterrupted shade area. Along the north and west sides of the covered space, six layers of welded wire mesh, typically used in concrete slab reinforcement, were incorporated to provide a sense of enclosure Using a process to burn the surface of wood panels, known as Sho Sugi Ban, 2 x 2 cedar ceiling panels were charred then rubbed down as a treatment to help prevent insect infestation and used as another teaching tool for the park s nature interpreter to talk about the coastal live oak community. Three custom designed dining tables can be positioned to evoke one large gathering table, but can be moved freely around. The pavilion and tables encompassed the holistic idea of large groups gathering and understanding more about the context around them, having revealed something that was always there, but otherwise unseen.
24 Poetics of Building 25 Top Image: Section showing the relationship between the Pavilion project and the previously built Fire Circle Bottom Image: Rendering of what will be the relationship between the Pavilion and the Fire Circle. It is also showing how the Pavilion s south screen will look over time.
26 Poetics of Building 27 Top Image: Construction Section showing relationship between the roof system, screen and tables. Bottom Image: Rendering showing the translucency of the east facing screen and it s relationship with the tables when they are set within the Pavilion.
28 Poetics of Building 29 The construction plan shows the implied boundaries set within the Pavilion, with portions such as concrete benches and the South screen stretch beyond those boundaries. This detail image shows how the separate tables come together to visually become one large table, large enough for a group of people to gather around.
30 Poetics of Building 31 This diagram shows the way in which six layers of welded wire mesh and two layers of re bar come together to create the dense yet translucent screen system. This image shows the perceived density of the screen system when approached from an angle.

36 37 CONTOUR MASS Spring 2013 Austin, Texas Instructors: Igor Sidiqqui & Marla Smith This chipboard contour model was designed to understand the potential relationship between a complex surface and it s massive counterpart,. The design addressed sectional differences with a continuous surface to create intriguing spaces that differ all throughout the form. The model was created from the relationship between complex geometries and their resolution through a component assembly of its contoured pieces. It was originally created as a solid massive form, but when looking at its properties through a means of constructing it out of thinly stacked pieces, the form became an informative way of understanding materiality and how the potentials of different materials can change the way spaces objects and forms are understood.
38 Contour Mass 39 The template above was used and created to make a physical stacked model out of chipboard. Stacked chipboard model shown above provided a means to test digital model.
40 41 TORSO Spring 2014 Austin, Texas Instructor: Keith Simon Collaborators: Jolene Byford, Kamree Gonzales, Stuart Yancey This collaborative project was designed for a portico space on the University of Texas at Austin s campus, between Parlin Hall and Calhoun Hall. The lighting conditions prior to the making of the luminaire, were non-existent at night within the space. The portico does include three chandeliers, however they are often not turned on and used for the convenience of anyone who may be passing by the area. The light which does enter the space is from 3 spillover sources: diffused light from the adjacent hallways, faint light from the mercury-vapor lamps that line the South Mall, and ambient light pollution from on campus. The lighting conditions in the portico create a mood that is reclusive and somewhat scare, making inhabitation of the space tense. The design intent is to softly raise the lighting level in order to replace the existing poorly constructed ambiance existing. The luminaire is designed to accent the seating area with diffused light directly downward. Upward sparkling light is casted to refract off the curved ceiling to raise the overall lighting level.
42 Torso 43 Section, elevation, and axons of luminaire. These were guides used for constructing the object. LED light would change color and set various spatial moods.
44 45 DRAWINGS & ARTWORK Art has always been an important aspect in design for me. Hand drawing is a way for me to look at and understand objects and spaces in relation to the human body. Different mediums, allow for an opportunity to look at experiences in various ways. Drawing styles such as tonality, perspective and color are some examples of how I use art and drawing as a way to further understand design decisions. Drawing allows for me to flesh out ideas and work in multiple scales at once. Details and materials can be understood through hand drawing, and that in turn can evolve into architecture. Right Image: 17 x 11 tonal drawing of column from campus building. Looking at and creating a tonal drawings without including any line work was the intent of this piece of work.
46 Drawings and Artwork 47 Watercolor study used to begin understanding the relationships between complimentary colors. Watercolor study used to understand layering of colors.
