6 What is citizenship? 20 th Century transition from subjects to citizens Two meanings: 1. A legal term to define one s status within a city or a country 2. A term that describes the spirit of a person who is aware of a set of rights and responsibilities as a member of a human community Citizenship now has local, national and global dimensions
