1 Living in future-proof municipalities Adapt Prevent Organize Status: Thursday, February 27, 2014 Symposium for local authorities (8th 9th April 2014), Robotation Academy, Hannover Exhibition Center Local authorities are faced with a set of new challenges managing democratic change, adapting the infrastructure to climate changes, and developing concepts designed to safeguard critical infrastructure. The overarching goal is to ensure the sustainability of cities and municipalities. These issues will be on the agenda at the symposium Living in future-proof municipalities on 8th and 9th April 2014 under the umbrella of Metropolitan Solutions. This symposium will be staged by Deutsche Messe with the support of the German Association of Cities and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB). Take this opportunity to discuss these topics with knowledgeable government policymakers, local authority experts, academics and members of the business and banking communities. 3 The resilient city protecting critical infrastructures Tuesday, 8th April, a.m a.m. In recent years major steps have been taken to systematize the safeguarding of critical infrastructure and to improve the level of protection available in Germany. Specific challenges exist in the areas of energy supply, information and communication technology, transport and traffic, as well as water supply and sewage disposal. Ensuring optimum security in these areas will be one of the major tasks facing towns and cities in the years ahead. How can greater resilience be achieved? And must resilience always entail additional safety measures and costs? Forum II will examine what tasks lie ahead for towns and cities if they want to prepare for the future and offer their citizens a safe living environment. 4 Managing the effects of climate change as a task for local authorities Wednesday, 9th April 2014, a.m p.m. At all levels from global to local climate change is seen as one of the biggest challenges of the future. This applies above all to densely populated areas located in coastal regions and/or on riverbanks. Against this background local authorities have already begun implementing preventive measures. Alongside the gradual changes in the urban climate, heavy rainfall will occur more frequently in almost all parts of Germany in the coming decades. Integrated adaptation concepts will create the basis for protecting citizens against extreme climatic effects and flood damage. What priorities are municipalities now setting in the area of climate change management? How can climate protection and climate change management be intermeshed? At Forum III the focus will be on specific application scenarios and recommended courses of action. 5 Demographic change as a challenge and an opportunity Wednesday, 9th April 2014, p.m p.m. Demographic change poses an immense challenge to Germany s towns and cities. The population will become smaller, older and more diverse. This in turn will have a massive impact on existing social and economic structures. In towns and cities i.e. at a local level overall social developments will manifest themselves in a need for action. Increasingly in recent years local authorities have developed strategic concepts and formulated political objectives with regard to the potential consequences of demographic change. Forum IV will discuss the tasks facing towns and cities and present successful practical examples.
