7 The problem In the automation world we can see management solution monitoring and controlling different things. BUT the things should be preferrably from one supplier. And the common way of server initiated SCADA communication is wasting: 99% of traffic is repeating Need for static public IP Changes arrive with delay Site equipment has to be programmed using special languages, ->> high cost 7

8 The likely solution In general terms, what are we managing (per item of interest)? status [ok, warning, critical, unknown]; a few numeric values (performance data); Some description should be added too, depending on status. A lot is said with colour, some text and a few numbers (if any). 8

The existing open source systems are still usable as a free core. 9

10 How to get there? There are many popular monitoring systems available Most of them are Open Source and free A few examples: Nagios, Icinga, Groundworks, Shinken, Zabbix... A lot of plugins created, continuosly improving. Why not to use? 10

11 How to get there? The almost only trick in reusing any of the already available monitoring systems is on the control side. Remote setup and commands must be possible. Documentation store for the sites must be available Maintenance log must be kept connected to the site Some special reporting may be needed As little as possible new things to learn or purchase... 11

To take advantage of individual communication possibilities we need to 1) have a need for some data from each and every fixture To know where to replace a lamp if broken? Do we have a problem finding them? 2) have the individual control information for the fixtures What is the source? Movement sensor on each lighting pole? Is this sustainable? 20

21 The more sustainable way The health of the fixtures can be evaluated by total values measurable in the lighting power distribution cabinet (current in Amps, power in Watts) The dimming control can be achieved by regulating the line voltage The energy consumption (and light generation) of the conventional HPS-lamps drops by 20 % if line voltage is dropped 10% Usually the LED-lamps do not care about line voltage due to their (limited) driver electronics. But the drivers may have 1 10V input. With a cheap AC/DC converter this input can be utilized to dim LEDs based on line voltage without any individual RF-communication. 21

And we can have both HPS and LED lamps the on the same line too. Line voltage changes are easier to do in steps, one step is the easiest. Let s not spend more than we save! 22
