The night garden can be magically transformed through lighting. Plants such as acers and geraniums which have translucent foliage will glow when lit from underneath. Architectural plants can be uplit to creating striking shadows, creating a feeling of depth. This can make a space appear much larger than it actually is. Parts of the garden which may go un-noticed during the day can become centre stage at night. And if you want something to disappear it s easy just don t light it. The key to success is to use good quality lights which include some form of glare control; something which is conspicuously absent in many cheaper fittings. All our Compact Wall Spots and Spike Spots have the lamp recessed within the fitting to reduce glare, while many of our other lights have dedicated glare shields. The night scene is so much more effective when the eye is not dazzled by seeing the light source. It is important to light the paths and steps sufficiently to make them safe by night. There may be enough ambient light already, but if you need more lighting there are plenty of tools available. Spreadlights are an excellent choice where you want soft pools of light without glare. They are non-directional and subtle. If you need something a little brighter you might consider the Pole Spot Solo or Pole Spot Duo. Here the light is raised up just like with the Spreadlights, but the light source is more directional and can be pointed in any direction. For lighting larger areas you might need something more substantial. So we have introduced a range of natural teak bollard lights that are more at home in a garden setting than the large metal constructions often found in pub car parks. If you need a bollard with excellent glare control you might choose the Stratus which has angled louvres. This is a good choice if you are concerned about light pollution. Corona 12v models take a MR16 LED lamp (sold separately) and are fitted with a 1.5m cable and a Plug&Play connector for easy installation, with the minimum of tools using Plug&Play transformers, connectors, extension cables and junction boxes. The longer bezel section provides glare control for both the 12v and 240v versions with sufficient space to incorporate honeycomb glare louvres, frosted or spread lens and coloured filters. Corona 240v take a GU10 LED (sold separately) and come with a 2m length of 3 core cable already fitted. Taurus spike spotlight 12v Plug&Play - LED - IP56 Elipta 12v Taurus adjustable spike spots are available in a bronze finished brass body and an aluminium, powdercoated version in black. Each has a finned spike and a deep glare shield to hide the light source from view. MR16 clip-on honeycomb glare louvres, frosted or spread lens or colour filters can be fitted internally on the front of the lamp. The cable enters through the spike-mount, a useful feature in reducing animal damage where urban foxes, or squirrels can be a nuisance. Athena recessed LED uplight 240v - IP67 Athena recessed uplight combines a cool top lens, long lamp life and energy efficiency for uplighting trees from lawns or paving. Athena provides a powerful 25 uplighting beam, using 12 x 1w LED lamps, while maintaining a typical top lens temperature of under 70 C so Athena can be used even in walkover areas to uplight trees with an open canopy and branch structure from directly below. Lampholder bracket is adjustable up to 20 from vertical for directional lighting. The shallow depth and no need to enter the Athena fitting for lamp installation or replacement make it quick and easy to fit unlike its metal halide cousins. The dark grey, nonreflective interior means less light refraction through the lens to give away its position in the landscape. G4 CAPLED lamp sold separately. A frosted lens diffuser is a common feature in all our spreadlights, and helps protect the lamp from irrigation spray. The shade and dome assembly is easily removed and replaced with a screw action, so tools are not required for changing the lamp. Narrow trees such as Silver Birch, Scots Pine and most conifers work best with a 36 light source. Medium spreading trees like Robinia, Cherry or Lime need lights with a 60 beam angle. While wide spreading mature Oaks and Cedars will usually require more than one light to achieve reasonable coverage. Extremely narrow subjects such as Italian Cypress could be lit using a very narrow light source, but in practice a 36 light will usually be effective. If a tree has an open canopy the light can be placed close to the trunk and pointed upwards to good dramatic effect. But where the foliage is dense it is better to light it up from the edge of the canopy. Grazing the outside in this way emphasizes textures and avoids the lower branches blocking the light from reaching the top. 28 CREATIVE LIGHTING CREATIVE LIGHTING Lighting effects Downlighting is lighting in a downward direction from a structure to project a pool of light onto a surface or feature below to provide general illumination for safety, security and amenity applications as well as contrast to uplighting of other features. Products to use: wall mount spotlights. Crosslighting means placing the light source to the side of the subject so that the light beam shines across it. This applies whether the light is mounted on the ground, or on a structure or tree. Products to use: adjustable spike spotlights and wall spotlights. Uplighting from below is the most common technique and a dramatic effect which demands attention as it reverses the daylight perspective of even light from above. Uplighting diagonally into the planting provides wider coverage in a shrub border. Products to use: spike spotlights and recessed uplights. Moonlighting is lighting down from low power lights fixed in a tree to shadow the lower branches and foliage onto the ground below. This provides a subtle, dappled lighting effect over a tree seat, lawn, patio, path or border. It is downlighting if the effect is for downward illumination rather than shadowing of branches etc. Products to use: tree mounted spotlights and hanging lights. Grazing is lighting at an acute angle from a position close to a surface to emphasise it's texture by casting strong shadow. This applies whether the light is mounted in or on the ground, or on a structure, such as wall mounted downlights. Products to use: adjustable spike spotlights, recessed uplights and wall spotlights. Spreadlighting is the use of a low-level stem mounted light with a hat or shield on top to provide a glare-free, usually circular pool of light for a path, step, terrace or area of low planting. Products to use: spreadlights (sometimes referred to as path lights). Underwater lighting uses directional luminaires to emphasise individual elements such as a fountain or waterfall feature. Position an underwater spotlight 1-20cm below the surface disturbed by a waterfall or spray so the light is continuously refracted in all directions, resulting in an attractive shimmering lighting effect. Products to use: wide beam, spike spotlights and floodlights. Steplighting is a functional requirement rather than a lighting technique and is best provided by small lights set into or mounted on a flanking wall; types with a hood or louvred grill will reduce glare, although open faced ones with frosted lenses provide wider coverage.
