2 SCHLOSS HOF Only an hour s drive from Vienna the Baroque synthesis of the arts Schloss Hof spreads out its magnificence in Lower Austria. The former imperial country estate was built in 1725 for the legendary military leader Prince Eugene of Savoy and extended and remodelled under Maria Theresa into the largest rural palatial complex in Austria. A stately home, an artistically laid out terrace garden and a tranquil estate with two new adventure paths form a unique ensemble combining imperial splendour and rural idyll. Hertha Hurnaus EXHIBITION Alliances and enmities Around 1775 Maria Theresa had a dowager apartment furnished in her rural seat of Schloss Hof in Lower Austria. This can now be viewed again after its restoration several years ago. On the piano nobile of the palace the exhibition portrays the difficulties in establishing her rule, wars and peace treaties, losses and gains of territory, as well as Maria Theresa s great creative drive in (foreign) politics. Join in the lively discourse about her life and prepare for surprises as to whom you might run into from the monarch s epoch. This special tour is rounded off with a taste of chocolate soup, personally served to you by a maid. With luck she might even reveal to you the actually secret recipe! Admission, guided tour and schnapps per person Duration... 1 hour A Culinary Journey into the Past The Taste of Baroque An epicurean trail through palace, garden and cellar illuminates the gastronomic predilections of the time of Prince Eugene of Savoy and Maria Theresa. On the way you can taste spiced wine and Baroque dishes, before discovering almost forgotten fruit and vegetable sorts in the manor farm, the realm of the historical estate manager. 3 SCHLOSS NIEDERWEIDEN Schloss Niederweiden was built in 1693/94 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach for Count Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg. Like Schloss Hof, Schloss Niederweiden was given its present appearance mainly through Maria Theresa, who in 1765 ordered it to be radically remodelled and extended. The secret of the former hunting lodge s special charm lies in the buoyancy of the architecture. It is a harmonious combination of the Baroque penchant for prestige with rustic snugness and enchants not least through its spacious garden with old trees and tranquil paths. Gerfried Tamerler EXHIBITION Modernisation and reforms Schloss Niederweiden is likewise located in the Marchfeld. The small and intimate palace was reserved for hunting parties and festivities. At this exhibition venue the focus will be on the major domestic reforms enacted by Maria Theresa that were to change the state substantially. A new spirit shaped the style of government in the second half of the eighteenth century; politics were characterised by utility concepts to enhance the wellbeing of the nation and its people. 4 HOFMOBILIENDEPOT IMPERIAL FURNITURE COLLECTION Behind a modern glass and steel façade newly designed a few years ago by the Italian architect Alessandro Alverà a fairy-tale world of imperial home culture opens up in the Hofmobiliendepot Imperial Furniture Collection. On more than 4000 square metres of exhibition space the former lumber room of the Monarchy presents examples of the most consummate craftsmanship and accoutrements of the noblest splendour, yet also a number of very curious exhibits including ingenious chamber commodes and the largest spittoon collection in the world. Wieland Kloimstein EXHIBITION Family and legacy In 1747 Maria Theresa founded the so-called Hofmobilieninspektion, the forerunner to today s Imperial Furniture Collection. Her surroundings with her family, her dynastic marriage politics and the personal fates of her children form the central focus of the exhibition. Other themes are the monument cult and survival of the Maria Theresa myth far beyond her death, and her favourite summer residence, Schönbrunn Palace. Groups and special guided tours on request. 5 IMPERIAL CARRIAGE MUSEUM VIENNA The exquisite fleet on display at the Imperial Carriage Museum Vienna located in the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace is an opportunity to travel through both time and history. The prize exhibit is undoubtedly the Baroque Imperial Carriage, surrounded by the Habsburgs other exquisite carriages, comfortable touring coaches, and quirky children s carriages. One of the highlights is the Sisi Trail, which features not only the Empress s own carriages but also exceptional cult objects such as her only preserved saddle, her riding chapel, and magnificent original dresses. Vienna Imperial Carriage Collection KHM-Museumsverband EXHIBITION A woman in power & joie de vivre The Imperial Carriage Museum Vienna is taking the opportunity of Maria Theresa s 300th birthday to cast a completely new light on her: the show focuses not on politics and war, but on Maria Theresa s joie de vivre, her feasts and public image in the charged field of polarities between female identity and male political power. Paintings, state carriages, costly robes and riding harness together with specially produced video installations resurrect the splendour of her epoch. PROGRAMME MODULE Guided tours of the exhibition The age of Maria Theresa saw the creation in Vienna of the most resplendent carriages, sledges, sedan chairs, harnesses, trappings and caparisons. The state coaches were like palaces on wheels. Our guided tours will transport you into the ceremonial splendour of the Rococo age. You will marvel at the richness of forms and gorgeous abundance of gilt carvings from the time when Mozart met the empress while still a little boy. 6 MARIA THERESA ( ) 13 May February November 1780 Maria Theresa is born as eldest daughter of Emperor Charles VI and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Marriage to Francis Stephen of Lorraine, to whom she will present 16 children in 19 years. After the sudden death of her father Charles VI, at the age of 23 Maria Theresa assumes rule over the Habsburg sovereign lands. Her claim of inheritance is not acknowledged by various European powers. The War of Austrian Succession follows. Coronation as Queen of Hungary. In the same year her eldest son is born, the later Emperor Joseph II. The extension of Schönbrunn Palace begins. The complex is given its present appearance in several phases and develops into the monarch s life s work. Maria Theresa s consort Francis Stephen is crowned as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in Frankfurt. She herself renounces a coronation. In the Treaty of Aachen, Maria Theresa is internationally acknowledged as ruler of the Habsburg Monarchy. A series of reform measures is initiated in the state and military administration, which lay the foundations for a radical modernisation of the Habsburg Monarchy. Francis Stephen dies suddenly, Maria Theresa from now on appears only in mourning dress. Joseph II becomes Holy Roman Emperor and her co-ruler in the Habsburg Monarchy. Maria Theresa s youngest daughter Marie Antoinette marries the French heir to the throne and future King Louis XVI. The alliance with France is deemed to be Maria Theresa s most momentous diplomatic achievement. Maria Theresa dies at the age of 63. She is interred at the side of her spouse in the Imperial Crypt (Kapuzinergruft) in Vienna. She had the rooms adorned with unique landscape paintings by Johann Wenzel Bergl, which themselves form a (visual) tour ranging over exotic landscapes to the artfully designed garden. The most important state rooms of the Maria Theresa era on the bel étage Small and Great Gallery, Carousel Room and Ceremonial Hall complete the tour. A noble breakfast service of pure gold and a golden toilet set embody the festive atmosphere of the Late Baroque era. The Imperial Treasury Vienna was formerly set up by Maria Theresa; her insignia and orders testify to the pride of the mighty monarch. Artistically crafted christening outfits demonstrate her piety, as do the many reliquaries and Mass vestments made of costly fabrics that she donated. These rooms are therefore predestined to be used as the venue for a presentation that focuses on Maria Theresia s youth and her relationship with the church. The exhibition documents the many close links between the church and the imperial family, which, particularly during Maria Theresia s reign, passed their high point as the early Enlightenment period began to establish itself.
