1 instructions to all participants conference workshops The conference is organized around a series of moderated seminar-workshops supported by both academic research papers and case studies presented by professionals in practice. Rather than comprising individual formal presentations of papers (in the traditional format of academic conferences), the conference-workshop emphasizes thematic discussions moderated by specialists in the field for which the research papers and case studies serve as invaluable input. Researchers have submitted papers for peer review and publication, describing in detail their research and/or experience; the papers are crucial to contribute to the discussions and will be included in the pre-event documentation. s also submitted a brief summary (one page max.) of their intervention explaining a case study (a construction project) or a work experience. The moderators will guarantee that the interventions are based on and supported by reliable facts and scientific research results. Participation in the workshops should not be a platform for subjective opinions but should be supported by the s or summaries. issues to be addressed and discussed in the workshops The workshops will address the following issues: How to procure a building project abroad? How do architects participate in international construction? What are the main risks of international procurement? What are the main risks of working abroad? Is there such a thing as a real international supply chain? What are the differences between local procurement and international procurement? What are the main opportunities for construction companies interested in working abroad? How must the relations between foreign organizations and local actors be established? What are the opportunities for by international organizations in post-disaster projects? participants: Each workshop will have between 4 and 6 participants (panelists) and about 10 to 20 participants in the audience. These participants will be a combination of academics and practitioners in the fields of: Architecture, Project Management and construction management, Urban planning, regional studies and urban management. Engineering and construction, Law (procurement and contractual arrangements for international construction), Humanitarian aid, and international development, Each workshop will have a reporter who will take notes of the discussion and will prepare a report to present in the plenary feedback sessions. 1/11 conference website:

2 duration Each workshop is allocated one and a half hours. discussion and period of questions Each workshop starts with the moderator inviting the panelists to briefly present their positions. Each panelist can present his/her argument in a maximum of 10 minutes. An electronic projector will be available in the room if panelists want to project a few images or Powerpoint slides. We encourage panelist not to present too many slides and instead concentrate in the argument of their intervention. Following these short presentations, the panelists can briefly discuss their respective positions. However, the majority of the workshop is reserved for open discussion, allowing the participants to contribute to developing knowledge about the workshop s particular theme.
