The relaxed, casual atmosphere of alfresco gettogethers puts everyone in the best of moods, sharing easygoing conversation and laughter. These are the times you ll remember forever. You can encourage togetherness when you build outdoor features with natural stone or paver blocks, virtually indestructible materials that make your outdoor living areas enduring places to come together, talk and laugh. Unlike features made of wood, maintenance-free stone design elements will last for generations. That s good news if you plan to stay in your house well into retirement years, but also if you plan to sell. In fact, the 2016 Remodeling Impact Report from the National Association of REALTORS says outdoor projects not only offer some of the highest returns at resale, they can also increase the happiness of homeowners who are staying put in their homes. With that in mind, here are three design elements that encourage togetherness, make happy memories and preserve your home s value. 3 WAYS TOGETHERNESS SPACES ENCOURAGE FAMILY TIME AND ENTERTAINING FRIENDS WHEN THE KIDS ARE GROWN. TOGETHERNESS TIP 1 FIRE PITS According to surveys from the American Society of Landscape Architects, a fire pit is the most-popular outdoor element and has been a top choice for several years running. There s nothing quite as enchanting as gathering around flickering flames, and the warmth extends outdoor living into chilly nights and colder months. Choose a fire pit made with natural stone or concrete pavers. You can design them as round, square, or custom to match the architectural style of your house and other surrounding outdoor elements. TOGETHERNESS TIP 2 TOGETHERNESS TIP 3 PLANTERS Planters add soothing greenery to your hardscape schemes and create living privacy screens, but don t hesitate to turn your planters into mini kitchen gardens for growing herbs, salad greens or spicy salsa peppers. Youngsters love tending plants they get to taste when ripe, and introducing them to homegrown edibles is a great way to interact with kids and establish a healthy connection with nature. Remember that planter walls can double as seating. For comfort, make walls 18 to 22 inches high (for kids, 12 to 17 inches high), with cap stones at least 10 inches deep. You ll need to reach into your mini garden for tending, so make planters no more than 4 to 5 feet wide. KITCHENS A meal cooked outdoors is a real people magnet, and you don t necessarily need a full-blown gourmet set-up to achieve legendary grill master status. A barbecue island fitted with a gas or charcoal grill is a permanent invitation to great outdoor living. Add storage compartments, a mini-fridge, and a wine cooler to keep the good times rolling.
