COMMUNITY VISION We, the citizens of Daly City, proudly celebrate our history, our location in the Bay Area, our distinct neighborhoods and the views of the fog-shrouded hills that define us. We take pride in our cultural diversity and work hard to promote community interaction. Daly City will be a community with a strong identity with several attractively designed gathering and civic places including a downtown.
COMMUNITY VISION We will focus on being a clean and attractive city with an efficient infrastructure. We will provide services for a full spectrum of age groups and mobility levels. We embrace our future, while respecting the past, and believe in directed growth that will increase opportunities to both live and work in the community. Our city will provide housing choices and balance that with a variety of economic opportunities with both unique small businesses and large businesses.
COMMUNITY VISION We are committed to constantly evolve our multi-modal travel environment to connect all neighborhoods. Daly City will offer a variety of recreational, cultural and entertainment opportunities for all. By our actions, we will showcase our environmental stewardship in being a sustainable and livable community at all levels. As a connected city and community working in partnership, we will emphasize interaction and participation from all, find meaningful ways to display our civic pride and showcase our strengths.
COMMUNITY CHARACTER Daly City will focus on creating an identity as a distinct city that is well planned and well maintained. It will display charm and character through thoughtful design and interesting streetscapes and a strong sense of place associated with a downtown.
COMMUNITY CHARACTER Its architecture will include an outstanding mix of buildings providing the city with distinctive landmarks and a rich layering of design, history, character and type of buildings. Daly City s neighborhoods will be enhanced with a mix of uses, housing choices, and amenities. The rich culture and diversity of Daly City will be showcased through various community events.
COMMUNITY CHARACTER contributing ideas Direct future growth with more intense mixed-use infill developments along major transit corridors and other appropriate locations. Revitalize Mission Street to become an urban walkable mixed-use neighborhood that provides a positive and cohesive identity for the entire city. Focus on creating an overall identity for Daly City through streetscape design and other placemakers. Incorporate a variety of well-designed public spaces throughout the city. Celebrate Daly City s cultural diversity through fairs and festivals.
COMMUNITY CHARACTER contributing ideas Ensure that Daly City is free of litter and graffiti and its infrastructure is well maintained. Enhance and connect existing neighborhoods with transportation options, sidewalks that are walkable and streetscape improvements. Provide comfortable lighting and attractive streetscapes to facilitate walking. Improve enforcement of codes in all neighborhoods. Consider enhancements to gathering spaces with comfortable lighting, signage and street furniture.
LAND USE/HOUSING Daly City will include well-designed housing choices for a variety of household incomes, life stages and its diverse population with a good balance between ownership and rental units. Mission Street and Geneva Avenue will become vibrant urban streets with a unique mix of uses and enhanced public improvements.
LAND USE/HOUSING contributing ideas Consider creative ways to incorporate housing to address all levels of affordability. Provide for a variety of housing that also include mixed-use housing, lofts, live-work, flats and other urban solutions. Provide opportunities for integrated senior housing. Ensure that multi-family housing units include adequate on-site amenities for all ages. Provide for adequate options in housing to accommodate larger and extended families. Incorporate housing targets for workers in Daly City. Provide opportunities for long-term renters to buy their first homes.
TRANSPORTATION Daly City will continue to improve transportation choices that reduce dependence on automobiles. Walking in Daly City will be a pleasant, safe and visually interesting experience. Public transportation will be easily accessed and affordable.
TRANSPORTATION contributing ideas Continue to explore ways of improving public transportation. Explore ideas like a shuttle to connect various activity nodes. Continue to improve the City s bicycle network including providing appropriately placed bicycle racks. Provide adequate parking options at activity nodes such as offices, shopping centers and BART. Enforce codes in existing neighborhoods to ensure that cars are not pared on sidewalks.
TRANSPORTATION contributing ideas Consider a streetcar/trolley along Mission Street promoting the idea of parking once. Consider parking solutions not at a parcel level but for a larger area. Manage parking assets creatively with joint uses and other events. Provide streets with a clear hierarchy to accommodate both cars and pedestrians. Incorporate traffic calming measures on streets especially adjacent to schools.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT and REDEVELOPMENT Daly City will be a vibrant community with a thriving and diverse economy that provides meaningful employment by taking advantage of its strategic location in the Bay Area. The City will focus on attracting major employment clusters with emerging markets. Retail, restaurant and entertainment facilities will provide options for all.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT and REDEVELOPMENT contributing ideas Continue to place emphasis on being a safe community with sound infrastructure. Focus on revitalization opportunities in the Bayshore neighborhood to provide major job opportunities. Plan for redevelopment of Mission Street as a mixed-use and walkable downtown. Expand and diversify economic opportunities that provide good living wage jobs. Identify and promote business-friendly programs and incentives for employment clusters.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT and REDEVELOPMENT contributing ideas Provide additional retail opportunities and shopping for all income levels. Explore ways to attract hotels, conference centers and educational facilities. Include more choices in restaurants and retail. Promote Daly City internationally as a destination to start businesses. Consider including health care, education, and clean and green technology businesses. Promote local businesses and consider employer incentives to hire local employees.
RECREATION/COMMUNITY SERVICES Daly City will include a wide array of services and recreational opportunities to address the needs of the entire community. Daly City will be a clean and attractive city that integrates its natural and built environments and provides opportunities to remain a connected community.

Plan for civic and cultural amenities such as museums, community centers and art centers. Consider venues like a multi-cultural center to celebrate the city s rich diversity. Link residential neighborhoods to schools, parks and activity nodes with sidewalks, paths and trails. Explore opportunities to provide coastal access where feasible.
RECREATION/COMMUNITY SERVICES contributing ideas Ensure adequate active recreation opportunities for seniors. Promote services for seniors that include mobility options and opportunities for social interaction. Incorporate more parks, open spaces and urban spaces throughout the city. Incorporate more youth programs and activities for kids and teens. Involve youth in public process by creating a youth commission.
RECREATION/COMMUNITY SERVICES contributing ideas Maintain high quality public safety. Plant more street trees and plants both for aesthetics and for the environment. Promote a variety of meaningful volunteer opportunities for all and especially youth and seniors. Create opportunities to foster and express civic pride. Maintain and enhance existing parks.
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY Daly City is a green city that practices conservation, maximizes recycling and promotes alternative energy sources. Its residents and business-owners believe that by actions both large and small, we can become responsible citizens of the earth. They understand that the City, due to its proximity to both major job centers and public transit, plays a vital role in reducing urban sprawl at the periphery of the Bay Area.
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY contributing ideas Promote environmentally sustainable and economically viable land use and development patterns that help reduce carbon footprint. Include a healthy balance of residential, business and retail/commercial uses within the city and in the region. Provide for greater transportation choices with public transportation, sidewalks, bike baths and trails to connect all neighborhoods with activity centers. Support alternative energy usage and green building techniques through incentives. Promote Daly City as a center for green and clean businesses.
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY contributing ideas Promote green image for Daly City with street trees, green parking lots, community gardens, use of recycled materials, energy efficient traffic lights, water resource management and electronic recycling. Support sustainable ideas through education and communication through the city s newsletter, website, city facilitated workshops, a green taskforce, a green festival and green business awards. Encourage use of shared facilities between schools and the community. Consider an energy audit for the city and other large businesses to incorporate energy saving ideas.
