Vision Statement The Oakton Mixed-use District is a unique place in Des Plaines. Its traditional development pattern will be the foundation for improvements that help create a strong pedestrian environment and focal point for the community. New activities and destinations will draw residents and visitors to this district and reestablish it as one of the city s great places to live, work and play. District Objectives Land Use Minimize the impacts of auto-related services on other commercial and retail uses Identify new opportunities for a variety of housing types that meet the city s current needs Look for opportunities to establish public spaces that provide the opportunity for events in the district Create an appropriate relationship between the commercial uses on reet and the surrounding residential blocks Transportation Create a safer environment for pedestrians in terms of sidewalk traffic, street crossings, and transit facilities Develop a strategic parking plan that takes advantage of deep parcels on the north side of the street and opportunities for municipal parking reservoirs, and provides flexibility for the provision of on-site parking Urban Design Create a more attractive mixed-use district through redevelopment or enhanced building design on existing developments Install a decorative streetscape according to a corridor-wide streetscape design program Develop prototype redevelopment schemes that incorporate concepts related to open space, parking management, mixed-use development, and corridor branding Take advantage of dramatic entry points to create gateways or focal points that enhance the identity of the River Oak mixed-use district Oakton Mixed-use District Vision and Objectives & Elmhurst Rd Corridor Study
