PAGE 3 GENERAL ADVICE Underfloor heating installations must include system controls in order to function efficiently. Best practice is that each room has its own zone with an individual thermostat or sensor for each zone. The thermostats can be connected to a master controller that controls the pump and actuators/valves. The master controller also gives an on/off signal to the heat source (heat interface unit, boiler etc.). For Part L compliance, a link is required between the controls and the boiler, so that the boiler can be switched off when there is no demand. However, to enhance the response time of underfloor heating, it is better to use a night set back at times of no or lower demand, reducing the temperature of the floor rather than turning it off. For more information on Building Regulations and Part L compliance, see pages 21-22. To increase the efficiency and accuracy of the system it can be combined with weather compensators, floor sensors and manifold temperature sensors. If the main heat source also serves a radiator or other high temperature heat emitters, a mixing manifold may be required to reduce the temperature going to the underfloor heating manifolds. At Giacomini we want to make sure you get the best controls for your system and your preferences. That is why we have put this guide together and hand picked our favourite products. We have separated the controls in to basic, intermediate and advanced so you can choose the controls based on your project requirements. Data sheets for all recommended products are available from our office on request. MANIFOLD CONTROLS THERMOSTATS WIRING CENTRES

PAGE 4 COMMON COMPONENTS IN A UFH CONTROL SYSTEM WIRING CENTRES allow central independent electrical control of all the underfloor heating zones, up to typically 8 or 10. It controls the pump, actuators and can also be linked to the heat source. The wiring centre often offers a time delay for the pump to switch on, making sure the relevant actuators have had time to open first. It also safely switches the pump off when there is no demand and all actuators are closed. If used in combination with a time clock or time switch, the wiring centre can be programmed as required and offer night set back. A THERMOSTAT controls, sets and monitors the temperature of a room. It sends a signal to the actuator to close when the temperature is at or above the set temperature, and to open when it falls below it. Thermostats come in a variety of types; they can be a manual dial type, directacting, electro-mechanical, electronic, digital or programmable, wired or wireless. Most thermostats function by measuring the air temperature of a room. However, some are responsive to both the air and radiant temperature, as well as the surface temperature of the floor if used together with a floor sensor. The FLOOR SENSOR is connected to the thermostat and measures the surface temperature when it needs to be limited. This can be either due to temperature restrictions of the floor finish or to comply with the British Regulations of maximum surface temperatures. The floor sensor can be a cable embedded in the flooring with a sensor at the end or it can be an infrared sensor built in to the thermostat. A WEATHER COMPENSATOR raises the flow temperature as the outdoor temperature drops, allowing the system to respond faster to temperature changes. It uses an algorithm together with indoor and outdoor air sensors to send a signal to a motorised valve on the flow to the underfloor heating manifold, asking it to increase or reduce the flow temperature.

PAGE 5 An ACTUATOR is a component positioned on the return bar of the manifold and controls one or more of the heating circuits. It receives an electronic signal from a thermostat or wiring centre telling it to open or close based on what is required. Our actuators are normally closed and powered open and available in 24v and 230v. A THERMOSTATIC MIXING VALVE is a self actuating three or four port valve that mixes the primary flow with the return water from the underfloor heating circuit, until it reaches the set temperature. If it is a four port valve, the fourth one will be for the primary return. A PUMP is used to circulate the water around the underfloor heating circuit. It is required when a thermostatic mixing valve is installed, so that the water can continue to circulate after the mixing valve has closed. A pump might also be required on distribution manifolds without a mixing valve, when the pump on the boiler cannot achieve the required flow rate around the system. Giacomini use a WILO Yonos PARA ErP compliant modulating pump. ACTUATED TWO PORT VALVES. When the manifold is supplying a single zone, actuators on each individual circuit are not required and a two port valve with an actuator on can be used instead. The two port valve will be installed on the primary flow to the manifold, controlling the entire flow to the manifold and will open and close as required.

PAGE 6 BASIC CONTROLS A good, basic underfloor heating control system will be less expensive to install and very easy to use. It usually consists of stand-alone room thermostats directly connected to actuators fitted on a distribution manifold. If a single manifold is controlling one zone only, the thermostat can be connected to a motorised two port valve, instead of controlling each circuit individually. If the single zone consists of one circuit only, a single zone manifold can be used. It is possible to add floor sensors and pump control in a basic system. It is also possible to programme the times you want the heating to come on, as well as additional night set back. This depends on the chosen thermostat. HEAT GENERATOR INDIVIDUAL ROOM TEMPERATURE CONTROL Where the thermostats are direct acting on the actuators controlling each circuit, which will be serving individual zones. HEAT GENERATOR REFERENCE ROOM TEMPERATURE CONTROL Where all circuits are supplying the same zone and can therefore all be controlled by the same two port valve on the flow to the manifold.

PAGE 7 COMPONENTS DANFOSS RMT ELECTRO-MECHANICAL ROOM THERMOSTAT This thermostat is as simple and easy to use as they come. Danfoss RMT dial type thermostats are available in 24V or 230V and can offer night set back if used together with an external time control. The required temperature is simply set by turning the dial. This makes it a very simple thermostat to use for the end user. DANFOSS TP5000SI PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT Next step up from the dial type thermostat but still incredibly easy to use, is this programmable thermostat also from Danfoss. It offers 5/2 programming meaning the temperature requirements can be set differently at weekends. It accommodates for up to 6 temperature changes in a day. The TP5000SI comes pre-programmed with time and date information. This thermostat is available as battery powered, hard-wired and wireless (RF - Radio Frequency). It can give a chrono-proportional or on/off signal to the boiler. Additional notes. The Danfoss FHWC wiring centre is compatible with the above control options (see p20).

PAGE 10 INTERMEDIATE CONTROLS An intermediate underfloor heating control system will be connected via a wiring centre, which gives you control over the boiler and pump. It also works with a mixing manifold with its own pump and mixing valve. This system allows you to programme the heating to come on when you want it to, depending on the chosen thermostat or timeclock when installed. COMPONENTS PAGE 11 The below thermostats are available as RF (Radio Frequency) for wireless control together with Heatmiser UH8-RF or Heatmiser RF Switch. HEATMISER SLIMLINE WIRED THERMOSTAT The Heatmiser Slimline 230v thermostat can be used in conjunction with the UH4 and UH8 wiring centres (see below). The thermostat enables 5/2 or 7 day programming. One of its main advantages is that the thermostat protrudes just 15mm from the wall surface when mounted. It is possible to control this thermostat with a infrared remote control. HEATMISER TOUCH/TOUCH-DUO WIRED THERMOSTAT This is another thermostat that can be used with the UH4 and UH8 wiring centres. It is a touchscreen thermostat that allows for 5/2 or 7 day programming, frost protection and can be used for two zones together with a remote air sensor; making it ideal for bedroom and adjacent en-suite scenarios. Another advantage is that the thermostat can be locked making it tamperproof. HEATMISER UH4/UH8 WIRING CENTRE These wiring centres can offer control of up to 4 or 8 heating zones, one of which can be a radiator circuit. It also gives an output to a hot water cylinder, the boiler and the pump. Up to 6 actuators can be connected to each zone. This wiring centre works with 230 volt thermostats. For wireless thermostats, Heatmiser UH8-RF can be used, which can control up to 8 heating zones. HEATMISER RF SWITCH The Heatmiser RF Switch offers wireless connection to the thermostat and controls of the two port valve, adjusting the flow to the heating circuit. It also sends a signal to the pump and boiler, to switch on and off as required. Alternatively the RF switch can be wired to a control unit.

PAGE 14 PAGE 14 ADVANCED CONTROLS ADVANCED CONTROLS An advanced underfloor heating control system can have all features of the intermediate level controls, such as programming, floor and flow sensors. What sets the advanced system apart is that it enables control from a central point within the building or even remotely. It can also be integrated with BMS so that the building owner can monitor and control the system. If used with a weather compensator, the system will react quicker based on outdoor temperature changes, adjusting the flow temperature accordingly. APP CONTROLLED ADVANCED SYSTEM SEE PAGE 16

One DPCV with partner valve is required for each manifold. DPCVs control the pressure differential for each manifold and as such the individual manifolds will not get affected by changes of pressure in other parts of the system. The whole system will remain balanced and this also means that each manifold can be commissioned individually. REGULATIONS UFH CONTROL Domestic Building Services Compliance Guide WLM3-3FS 8 0 10 AMP IP21 315 X 130 X 53 MM ADDITIONAL 6 ZONES OPTIONAL MODULE OPTIONAL OPTIONAL MODULE The Domestic Building Services Compliance Guide gives advice on how to meet the minimum energy efficiency requirements for new dwellings, set out in Part L1A of the Building Regulations 2010 which are the building regulations for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Domestic Building Services Compliance Guide also applies when an underfloor heating system is extended or provided in existing dwellings. Section 7 of this guide sets out the minimum requirements for Underfloor Heating systems. The minimum requirements for wet underfloor heating systems are; - A separate flow temperature high-limit thermostat is required for warm water systems connected to any high water temperature heat supply (i.e. operating at more than 60C). - Mixed systems containing both radiators and floor heating, connected to a common high water temperature supply (i.e. operating at more than 60C), should be provided with a separate means of reducing the water temperature to the floor heating system. - Each room should have its own temperature control device; however it may be acceptable for adjacent rooms with similar function e.g. kitchens and utility rooms to share a thermostat or sensor. - Bathrooms or en-suites which share a heating circuit with an adjacent bedroom will provide heat only when the bedroom thermostat is activated. In such cases, the bathroom or en-suite areas should be fitted with an independent towel rail or radiator. - Weather compensating controllers should be installed. - Dwellings with a total useable floor area up to 150m2 should be divided into at least two zones with independent temperature control, one of which is assigned to the living area. - Dwellings with a total usable floor area greater than 150m2 should be provided with at least two space heating zones each having separate on/ off timing controls and temperature controls. - For single storey open-plan dwellings in which the living area is greater than 70% of the total floor area, sub-zoning of temperature control is not appropriate. - Thick screed floor heating systems (>65mm) should have facilities for automatic setback of room temperature to a lower level at night or during unoccupied periods. - Warm water floor heating controls should be interlocked with the boiler and stored hot water temperature control to ensure that the boiler does not fire when there is no demand for heat for either space or water heating. Regulations continued on page 22.

PAGE 22 REGULATIONS UFH CONTROLS REGULATIONS (CONTINUED) UFH CONTROL BS EN 1264-3 Maximum surface temperatures The recommended maximum floor temperatures for an underfloor heating system can be found in BS EN 1264-3. For comfort reasons, it is suggested the floor temperature should not be more than 9C above the room temperature for residence areas. This is normally not too high so shouldn t cause discomfort but still high enough to give a reasonable output. In normally occupied areas with a room temperature of 20C, this gives a maximum floor temperature of 29C. For bathrooms where the temperature requirement is often higher at 24C, it will give you a maximum surface temperature of 33C. In areas where people are normally not seated, such as around the circumference of the room and near doors and windows, the temperature difference between the floor and the room can be higher and up to 15C. The floor temperature should still not exceed 35C. Having a higher floor temperature near windows and doors where there is a natural drop in air temperature can mitigate the effect. The increase or decrease of surface temperature in certain areas should however not be done by means of controls, but by increasing or decreasing the pipe spacing. Another consideration to make with regards to surface temperatures is that certain flooring material and adhesives might be sensitive to high temperatures, and if the surface temperature needs restricting, it will typically be to 27C. To monitor and control the surface temperature, we recommend the use of a floor sensor. THERMOSTATS IN BATHROOMS Ingress Protection (IP number) The IP rating of electrical equipment classifies the degree of protection the equipment has against ingress of solids or liquids and is defined in IEC 60529. The rating consists of the letters IP followed by two numbers. The first number will range from 0 to 6 and shows the protection against ingress of solids where a 1 means a large solid (such as a hand) and a 6 means the enclosure is dust tight. 0 offers no protection at all. The second number will range from 0 to 9 and indicates the level of protection the enclosure offers from liquids. Again, 0 offers no protection at all, 1 means the enclosure offers protection from dripping water, and a 9 offers protection from powerful high temperature water jets. For thermostats in bathrooms we are concerned with the second number of the IP rating where thermostats installed in zone 1 or 2 of a bathroom must have an IP rating of IPX4 or higher. BS 7671:2008 IET Wiring Regulations Seventeenth Edition Section 701 of BS 7671:2008 lists the requirements of electrical installations in bathrooms and divides these into three zones: Zone 0 is the interior of the bathtub or shower basin, electrical equipment installed here must have an IP rating of IPX7 (immersion, up to 1 m in depth) or above. Zone 1 is the area directly above zone 0 up to 2.25 m above finished floor level (or the highest shower head/water outlet, whichever is higher). If there is a shower without a basin, zone 1 is cylinder shaped with a 1.20 m radius from the shower head/water outlet reaching from the finished floor level and up to 2.25 m above it. The electrical equipment of this zone must have an IP rating of IPX4 (splashing of water) or higher. Zone 2 is a 0.6 m horizontal perimeter border of zone 1. Electrical equipment of the same IP rating as in zone 1 can be used here, IPX4 or higher.
