Page 2 of 5 Paul A. Cawood Hellmund has had a varied career as a conservation planner, landscape architect, writer, and teacher. He has extensive background in both planning and ecology, which he has applied to open space, parks, and refuge planning. Paul co-authored the book Ecology of Greenways, (University of Minnesota Press, 1993), a guide to the design of linear conservation areas, which won a national award from the American Society of Landscape Architects. More recently he co-authored Designing Greenways (Island Press 2006). He also authored the widely used Planning Trails with Wildlife in Mind and On Nature s Trail; Statewide Strategic Trails Plan, for Colorado State Parks. His projects, extending over a span of more than 20 years, have included greenway, open lands, and scenic byways planning in Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, and Arizona and wildlife refuge planning in Colorado and Utah. He was the principal author of In the Nature of Things, Loveland s Natural Areas. He directed the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge Master Plan (1994-96), the Inland Sea Shorebird Reserve (1995-96), and the Front Range Mountain Backdrop Conservation Project for Colorado s five Front Range Counties (1995-96). He wrote the grant proposal and directed a Colorado Smart Growth-funded conservation plan for US Highway 85 through Douglas County. Of particular interest to Paul is the revitalization of mined, degraded, and contaminated streams and lands, work he has pursued at the former Stapleton International Airport (Denver), the Rocky Mountain Arsenal (Commerce City, Colorado), Lowry Air Force Base (Denver), Rocky Flats Nuclear Production Facility (Jefferson County, Colorado), Climax Mill Tailings Site (Grand Junction, Colorado), South Platte River (Denver and Adams Counties), and Westerly Creek (Denver). The Conway School of Landscape Design is the only institution of its kind in North America. Its focus is sustainable landscape planning and design. Each year, through its accredited, ten-month graduate program just eighteen to nineteen students from diverse backgrounds are immersed in a range of applied landscape studies, ranging in scale from residences to regions. Graduates go on to play significant professional roles in various aspects of landscape planning and design.
