1 university OF colorado boulder Systems biotechnology building B elt Collins was hired as the landscape architect on the HDR/ Robert A.M. Stern Architecture team to assist with the site and planting design surrounding the new System Biotechnology Building on the East Campus at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Belt Collins worked with RAMSA to develop a site plan to create comfortable pedestrian environments that relate to the architecture and major circulation patterns. Forms reflect the biotechnology being studied within the building and integrated into the design of the unique outdoor spaces. The overall landscape concept creates a cohesive design that responds to and connects the various courtyard spaces around the building by planting large masses and informal drifts of regional species that mimic the natural ecosystems found along the Front Range of Colorado. The plant list is comprised of native and adapted plants with low water requirements providing yearround beauty in the landscape. This project is striving for LEED Platinum accreditation. Belt Collins was responsible for all water efficiency credits. (Building model by RAMSA) LOCATION CLIENT LEAD OFFI CE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER
2 UNIVERsity of colorado at Boulder Research park B elt Collins (formerly Love & Associates) produced a Master Site Development Plan, Flood Mitigation Plan, and Design Guidelines for the University of Colorado s 160-acre Research Park. Situated at the busy corner of Foothills Parkway & Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder, Colorado, the innovative development successfully balances economic development with environmental preservation by combining offices for organizations performing research for the university with extensive open space and water features. As a result of the pioneering plan, Belt Collins was selected to design and supervise Phase I infrastructure construction involving storm water management, flood control, roads, water and sanitary sewer utilities with a dual water system, open space improvements, and wetland mitigation. Utilizing water rights owned by the university, a central waterway was designed to meander through an extensive open space system. The central waterway is unprecedented in its complexity of purpose, providing key functions such as irrigation, a recreation & greenways trail corridor, and an aesthetic focus. A 23-acre wetland park intercepting the waterway serves as a regional detention basin for the Boulder Creek floodplain and diverts and cleans storm water runoff from Boulder Creek. Buildings clustered around plazas, courtyards, an amphitheater, and multi-functional paths with educational and recreational amenities combine with the water features to create a pleasing village-scale campus environment.
