1. Features The 489D is a fully featured clamp meter that includes high sensitivity current, voltage and resistance measurements for RCD circuit analysis. LCD Screen LCD indication of all measurements and functions. Safety Designed Especially designed for safety throughout. No exposed metal on the external case. Double insulated to Australian and International Standards. Functional Design The 489D is so compact you can take it anywhere, yet is completely user friendly with a large rotary range switch that enables easy single-handed operation. A peak hold facility and swivel strap are also included for added convenience. Low Power Consumption Through the use of low energy circuits a single 9V battery will continuously power the instrument for approximately 200 hours. Battery Check Battery symbol is displayed on screen when battery needs replacing. 3 F1365-04 10337881 489D UniversalClampMeter Instr.indd 3 5/11/2007 10:37:49 AM

4. How to Make Measurements a.c. Current Measurements Note: Before measuring current, make sure that the voltage test leads are removed from the instrument. 1. Release the peak hold and turn meter on by depressing power button. 2. Turn the range switch knob to the relevant amp. scale. 3. Press the trigger on the right side of the instrument to open the transformer jaws and encircle conductors with the transformer jaws (see example Fig. 2, A, B, C). 4. Switch meter off upon completing measurement by releasing power button. 4.1 Line Current Measurement Examples A Fig. 2 6 F1365-04 10337881 489D UniversalClampMeter Instr.indd 6 5/11/2007 10:37:52 AM

4.2 Leakage Current Measurements 1. Follow steps 4(1) and (2) on page 6 and 7. 2. Turn range switch knob to the 40mA scale. 3. Open the transformer jaws and clamp all active and neutral conductors of the circuit under test (Fig. 2A). (For the purpose of RCD installations, leakage values greater than 5mA should be traced to their source and eliminated.) 4. To test an appliance equipped with a flexible power lead and plug, plug the appliance into the available socket via the appliance test adaptor provided with this instrument. (Fig. 3) 5. Turn the power and the appliance on, then clamp the jaws around the active and neutral loop wires on the appliance test adaptor (see Fig 3A). 6. Switch power off upon completing measurement. Appliance Test Adaptor Fig. 3 8 Fig. 3A 5. Tips for Fault Finding and Testing in RCD Installations 1. Lint collecting in the terminal enclosure of irons. 2. Accumulation of crumbs and other food particles in toasters and mini ovens. 3. Moisture accumulating in heating elements in appliances such as cookers, ovens, hot water services, urns, etc. F1365-04 10337881 489D UniversalClampMeter Instr.indd 8 5/11/2007 10:37:52 AM
6. Typical Causes of Leakage Current in Fixed Wiring 1. Additional M.E.N. points downstream of the RCD. 2. Incorrect wiring of socket outlets or light points (eg. neutral and earth exchanged). 3. Use of neutral or active from non RCD protected circuits to power loads in an RCD protected circuit. a.c. Plug the red test lead into the VOLT terminal and the black test lead into the COM terminal. 3. Turn the range switch knob to the 600V scale. 4. Bring one of the test leads in contact with one side of the circuit under test and the other with the other side. 5. Switch meter off upon completing measurement by releasing power button. a.c. 8. Resistance Measurements 1. Release the peak hold and turn meter on by depressing power button. 2. Turn the range switch knob to the Ohm scale. 3. Insert black banana plug of the voltage test leads into the COM terminal. Then, insert the red banana plug into the red terminal. 4. As shown in Fig. 4 connect the test leads to the circuit under test for resistance measurements. 5. Switch meter off upon completing measurement by releasing power button.
