Community Planning and Development Denver Landmark Preservation 201 West Colfax, Dept. 205 Denver, CO 80202 p: (720)-865-2709 f: (720)-865-3050 www.denvergov.org/preservation STAFF BRIEF E-Mail: landmark@denvergov.org This document is the staff s comparison of the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation, Design Guidelines for Landmark Structures and Districts, the Landmark Preservation Ordinance (Chapter 30, Revised Municipal Code) and other applicable adopted area guidelines as applied to the proposed application. It is intended to provide guidance during the commission s deliberation of the proposed application. Guidelines are available at www.denvergov.org/preservation Project: 2016-COA-449 Meeting: November 3, 2016 Address: 1615 17th Street Staff: Jennifer Cappeto Historic Dist/DLM: Lower Downtown Historic District Zoning: D-LD-UO-1 Applicant: Dun-Rite Signs Application: Install a three-dimensional projecting sign Staff comments: The proposed projecting sign is three-dimensional and iconographic in nature. It will be attached a wood pier in a location on the Comprehensive Sign Plan approved for the building in September 2016. It will be externally illuminated, and will be made of painted metal. Note: A wall sign shown on the photo simulations was approved by Landmark Preservation staff in October 2016 and is not under review by the LDDRB. Recommendation: APPROVE Basis: The projecting sign is sculptural, iconographic, and three-dimensional (Guidelines 7.1a and 7.1c). It will be installed using a simple bracket (Guideline 7.1j) mounted on the non-historic wood storefront pier (Guideline 1.8b). It will be externally illuminated with simple contemporary fixtures (Guideline 1.9f), and will be made of painted metal (Guideline 1.7a). It does not repeat the form or content of other signs approved for the site (Guideline 1.6a). Furthermore, it meets all requirements set forth in the approved Comprehensive Sign Plan. Suggested Motion: I move to approve application 2016-COA-449 for the installation of a projecting sign at 1615 17 th Street as per design guidelines 1.6c, 1.7a, 1.8b, and 7.1a, c, e and j, presented testimony, submitted documentation and information provided in the staff report. Excerpted from Design Guidelines for Lower Downtown Historic District Appendix A: Standards and Guidelines for Signs (November 2014) Guideline 1.6c Recommendation: Do not overpower a historic building or district with repetitive signs on a historic façade or site. Meets guideline? Comments The proposed projecting sign is a threedimensional interpretation of the Dish Network logo and does not include any lettering. The approved wall sign only includes lettering. Continued

Guideline 1.7a. Requirement: Use permanent, durable materials such as metals, metal composites, and other high-quality materials. Meets guideline? Comments The proposed projecting sign will be painted aluminum shapes. The bracket will also be painted aluminum. 1.8b. Recommendation: Install sign brackets into mortar joints or wood materials, rather than into masonry or cast iron, whenever possible. The projecting sign will be mounted to the non-historic wood pier at the storefront. 1.9f Recommendation: Use simply designed unobtrusive lamps, such as goose neck lamps or simple contemporary fixtures, for external lighting sources. The projecting sign will be externally illuminated with simple contemporary fixtures, as required by the approved Comprehensive Sign Plan. 7.1a Requirement: Create eye-catching and wellcrafted three-dimensional objects to portray a business persona or service with as few words as possible. 7.1c Requirement: Propose projecting signs to be sculptural, three-dimensional objects which are either literal forms or abstracted interpretations. 7.1e Requirement: Locate projecting shaped signs at or immediately above ground level, advertising uses with direct street level access. 7.1j Recommendation: Use simple bracket designs that serve as a backdrop to hold the three-dimensional imagery. The proposed projecting sign is eyecatching, and is a three-dimensional interpretation of the Dish Network logo. There are no words on the projecting sign. It will be located at the transom-level of the storefront in an area shown in the approved Comprehensive Sign Plan. The sign will be mounted using a simple bracket matching the bracket in the approved Comprehensive Sign Plan. END 2016-COA-449 1615 17 th Street November 3, 2016
