TOWN BRANCH COMMONS & VINE STREET MOBILITY IMPROVEMENTS The Town Branch Commons will be a linear park that follows the historic path of the Town Branch Creek and modern-day Vine Street. Incorporating underutilized right-of-way, surface parking lots, water infrastructure, and existing parks, it will connect a countywide trail system, clean and manage storm water, and transform downtown Lexington with complete streets and parks. Planning for the first phase of construction and fundraising is underway, which will utilize public and private funds to build the connective infrastructure of the project, modernize Vine Street with complete streets design, and construct a signature and timeless central park for the entire community.
TOWN BRANCH PARK TRANSFORMING COX STREET LOT EXISTING THE 21ST CENTURY WILL BE AN URBAN CENTURY AND THOSE CITIES THAT BUILD AND SUSTAIN GREAT PARKS SYSTEMS WILL THEMSELVES BE SUSTAINABLE AND PROVIDE A FIRM FOUNDATION FOR HEALTHY, DIVERSE, AND ECONOMICALLY VIABLE COMMUNITIES. DAN JONES, CEO, 21ST CENTURY PARKS RECREATION Lexington has a wealth of greenways that often follow natural features like streams. Next to storm water control, greenways offer space for recreation and link neighborhoods to nature preserves, parks, schools, cultural institutions, and historic sites. New development has limited the extent of greenways in Lexington. By reviving and partially daylighting Town Branch, a new stream corridor is created that has the potential to connect across the entire city and improve the everyday lives of all citizens. MOBILITY While the rural bike network of the Bluegrass Region is well established, the urban area is currently composed of a series of disconnected bike and pedestrian trails. The new Town Branch Trail will create urban, suburban, rural and regional connections for bikers as well as pedestrians. This new transportation infrastructure will allow the rising number of bicycle commuters to reach their workplace more safely and quickly and will provide recreational loops for families and sport enthusiasts. WATER Lexington has been active in funding green infrastructure projects and stormwater education initiatives to meet the 2011 EPA Consent Decree to improve water quality throughout the city. However, the vast majority of projects and nearly $4,000,000 in funds have been invested outside of the downtown, while the hydrological heart of the city Town Branch Creek remains buried beneath the downtown corridor. The Town Branch Commons project would incorporate green infrastructure and stormwater education throughout downtown.
