It is intended to provide guidance during the commission s deliberation of the proposed application. Guidelines are available at www.denvergov.org/preservation Project: 2017-COA-459 Meeting: December 7, 2017 Address: 1516 Wazee St Staff: Becca Dierschow Historic Dist/DLM: Lower Downtown Historic District Zoning: D-LD-UO-1 Applicant: Gordon Signs / Ascent Investment Application: Install one 3-dimensional projecting sign Staff comments: The proposed projecting sign is three-dimensional and iconographic in nature. It will be attached the building via a square aluminum bracket. The sign will be made primarily of aluminum with an epoxy-coated cork background. It will be externally illuminated via gooseneck light fixtures. Recommendation: APPROVE Basis: The projecting sign is iconographic and three-dimensional (Guidelines 7.1a and 7.1c). It will be installed using a simple bracket (Guideline 7.1j) to a wood pilaster (Guideline 1.8b). It will be illuminated with a simple gooseneck light (Guideline 6.10h), and will be made of painted metal (Guideline 1.7a). Suggested Motion: I move to approve application 2017-COA-459 for the installation of one projecting sign at 1516 Wazee Street per design guidelines 1.7a and c, 1.8a and b, 6.10h, and 7.1a, b, c, e, g and j, presented testimony, submitted documentation and information provided in the staff report. Excerpted from Design Guidelines for Lower Downtown Historic District Appendix A: Standards and Guidelines for Signs (November 2014) Guideline 1.7a. Requirement: Use permanent, durable materials such as metals, metal composites, and other high-quality materials. 1.7c. Requirement: Create well-crafted signs of high quality construction with durable finishes. Meets guideline? Yes Comments The proposed projecting signs will be painted aluminum. The bracket will also be painted aluminum. Continued

Guideline 1.8a Requirement: Limit physical damage to historic buildings caused by the installation of signs. 1.8b. Recommendation: Install sign brackets into mortar joints or wood materials, rather than into masonry or cast iron, whenever possible. 6.10h. Recommendation: Use simply designed unobtrusive lamps, such as goose neck lamps or simple contemporary fixtures, for external lighting sources. 7.1a Requirement: Create eye-catching and wellcrafted three-dimensional objects to portray a business persona or service with as few words as possible. 7.1b Requirement: Keep wording and logos to a minimum on a three-dimensional object, but ensure any wording is readable. 7.1c Requirement: Propose projecting signs to be sculptural, three-dimensional objects which are either literal forms or abstracted interpretations. 7.1e. Requirement: Locate projecting shaped signs at or immediately above ground level, advertising users with direct street level access. 7.1g. Recommendation: Abstracted, exaggerated or embellished interpretations of literal forms are preferred. 7.1j Recommendation: Use simple bracket designs that serve as a backdrop to hold the three-dimensional imagery. Meets guideline? Yes Yes Yes Comments The projecting sign will be mounted to wood pilaster. The projecting sign will be externally illuminated with a gooseneck light fixture. The proposed projecting sign is an eyecatching, three-dimensional object. The sign incorporates lettering that is legible but does not detract from the threedimensional form of the sign. The sign is located above the entryway of the building. The sign will be mounted using a simple bracket. END 2017-COA-459 1516 Wazee Street December 7, 2017
