2 Employee Spotlight Filmore Brinkley A local boy scout troop s tragedy turned into a triumph, thanks to Filmore Brinkley, who, along with other heating oil service technicians and area contractors, transformed a rusty old hut into a meeting place to be proud of. The story starts in February, when Troop 207 in Portsmouth had 100 gallons of its heating oil a three-year supply stolen from the tank outside its headquarters, a converted Quonset hut located behind St. Andrew Lutheran Church. Not only was the oil replaced, but the entire structure was renovated with a new oil tank, furnace, ductwork, insulation, ceiling, carpeting and paint. Time, talent and materials were all donated by local heating oil and contracting companies. Best of all, the scout troop will receive free oil as long as it exists. The project was sponsored by Oil Heat Cares, a not-for-profit foundation that assists needy persons and organizations with the replacement of their Oilheating equipment. Funds are raised to purchase heating equipment and NAOHSM (National Association of Oil Heating Service Managers) chapters and members identify those within their neighborhoods that need a temporary helping hand by installing the equipment at no cost to the recipient. In this specific case, E.T. Lawson and other members of the Tidewater chapter of NAOHSM were the helping hands that reached out to Troop 207. For this act of charity, the Tidewater chapter was honored with the Oil Heat Cares Gold Cup at NAOHSM s annual convention in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The work was supposed to last a day, but took only six hours, says Filmore. We had a game plan. Specifically, E.T. Lawson donated a new thermostat and tank fittings, but its team members donated their elbow grease to all aspects of the hut s renovation. This project took off, says Filmore. It was on WVEC- TV and in The Virginian-Pilot. He adds humbly, Everyone working on it was one big family. I m proud to have been a part of it. Filmore knows what it s like to get involved in all aspects of a job. As E.T. Lawson was deeply shocked and saddened by this past April s Virginia Tech tragedy. We send our condolences to the families and friends of the Virginia Tech victims and to everyone who was affected by this senseless act of violence. Looking Forward While we cannot forget the terrible tragedies that occurred at Virginia Tech, we also want to emphasize to our customers that amazing strides in energy research are being made there that will make an impact on the way we think about and use energy. Some of Virginia Tech s 300 energy projects have already produced significant results among them, the Frequency Monitoring Network, deployed in response to the August 2003 blackout that affected 50 million Americans. The Virginia Tech Deans Task Force for Energy Security and Sustainability seeks to coordinate, promote, and position Virginia Tech's educational, research, and outreach efforts to achieve sustainable and secure energy systems. The university runs an Energy and Environment Speaker Series, featuring such notables as James R. Schlesinger, the first U.S. Secretary of Energy; and former Virginia governor Mark Warner. Among the many centers and groups doing energy research through the university are the Center for Energy and the Global Environment, a catalyst for developing solutions to environmental problems throughout the world; and the Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research, which is implementing sustainable development indicators for mining. On- and off-campus educational programs provide instruction on energy issues.
