1. INTRODUCTION A macerator is a tank that collects sewage from toilets, showers, and bathtubs via the simple principle of gravity. It is designed with an in-built pressure switch which detects the incoming waste and activates a pump. This pump works in tandem with several cutting blades to convert the sewage into a fluid form which can be easily pumped into drains via small-diameter pipes. The macerator also comes with a standard non-return valve which makes it possible for the tank to pump the waste in a vertical direction of about 7m (22 feet) without the waste flowing back into the bathtubs, toilets, or shower stalls. Constructed in a reputed plant to meet the standard of modern appliances, this macerator is equipped with the latest soundproofing technology. However, the product can only be fully enjoyed and utilized to the maximum if the installation instructions are followed to the letter GENERAL DESCRIPTION The macerating unit is a very common pumping-and-discharge system for the collection and disposal of waste in houses. However, its use is limited to certain areas and appliances in the home. The macerating unit can only be used in the toilet and bathroom for disposing human waste, dirty water and toilet paper. Its use in the kitchen is prohibited as it is not designed for kitchen waste. It must not be connected to kitchen fixtures such as dishwashers. On the other hand, sanitary fittings in the toilet and bathroom can be connected to the unit. It is advisable to connect not more than one water closet fixture to a macerating unit. Aside from this exception, a singular unit can effectively accommodate multiple shower stalls, bathtubs, urinals and sinks. Generally, the sewage disposal system for residential buildings is made up of three key components: The toilet bowl The toilet tank The macerating unit The macerating unit itself comprises three major components as well: A secure housing for the unit s operating mechanism

An automatic pressure chamber for activating and deactivating the pump An induction motor responsible for propelling the impeller and the cutting blades. For effective use, the macerating unit should be connected to a rear spigot outlet toilet via the toilet s outlet on the wall, and the waste collected should be discharged into a drainage pipe with a minimum diameter of 3/4 inch. The unit is designed to pump waste vertically to a maximum height of 15 feet (4.57m) with a minimum gravity flow of 1/4 inch per foot throughout the horizontal run to the discharge point. It must be noted that the waste water can be changed to flow in a vertical direction as long as the horizontal run has not been reached. Therefore, any change in direction must be done before the horizontal run and at a point close to the discharge elbow SANITARY INLETS The macerating unit is connected to the drainpipes of sanitary fittings in the toilet and bathroom via two inlets. These inlets are designed with an internal check valve and located one on each side of the unit. If one of the inlets is not being used at the moment, ensure you seal it off via the plugs provided in the product s packaging Installation of Sanitary Fixtures Before connecting your sanitary fixture to the macerating unit via any of these inlets, a suitable platform height must be established for the fixture. This height serves to ensure that the minimum gravity flow required for the macerating unit to effectively function can be achieved. The platform height is simply the distance between the P-trap of the sanitary fixture and the macerating unit. Once this height is obtained, a platform for the fixture can be built and its P-trap installed. For a regular bathtub fixture, a platform can be constructed from 2 X 8-inch lumber, and the tub placed on the platform. This provides the required clearance for the tub s P-trap and aids the connection of its drainpipe to the macerating unit via the sanitary inlet.

For a regular shower, the same applies, as a 2 x 8-inch lumber platform can be constructed for the shower stall. However, if the shower purchased is not the regular type, a specially-raised base can be installed to achieve the same purpose NORMAL OPERATING CYCLE Once the toilet is flushed or water leaves your bathtub or shower, the waste (both human waste and toilet paper from the toilet or dirty water from the bathtub or shower) enters the macerating unit. As the water level within the unit begins to rise, the micro-switch located in the pressure chamber is activated. This triggers the motor which in turn drives the pump and blades to shred the incoming sewage into an easy-to-pump fluid form. The converted waste is then gathered by the impeller and discharged into the sewer through a drainage pipe of about 3/4 1 inch in diameter. Caution: For safety reasons, the macerating unit must not be operated when its lid is either detached or not properly attached.

2. INSTALLATION This unit is designed for use with a horizontal toilet having a standard outlet with the recommended European distance of 18 cm to the outlet center from the floor. All other inlets must be gravity-fed into the unit. The standard outlet is intended for use with a 32mm connection. However, a 22mm connection can be used albeit with a reducer PREPARATION OF THE MACERATING UNIT The macerating unit has a rubber hose positioned on top of its lid. To ready the unit for use, insert the long end of the plastic discharge elbow/check valve assembly into the rubber hose on the unit s lid. At the discharge side of the elbow assembly, a step-down rubber fitting should be inserted and properly secured with the metal clamps provided in the product s packaging. The dimensions of the rubber fitting may not be compatible with the diameter of your discharge pipe. In a situation like this, cut the rubber fitting to the desired and appropriate size. All fittings used should be well secured with metal clamps CONNECTION OF OTHER SANITARY FIXTURES TO THE UNIT Use the provided side connectors to connect the macerating unit to the inlets located on each side of the unit. These connections must be properly secured with clamps. For any side inlet left unused, lubricate its joint with grease before sealing it off with the provided filler plugs or blanking covers. For a well-detailed illustration depicting these connection processes, see Page 3, Diagram 7c. Caution: The bottom of your shower stall must be at a height of at least 7 inches from the ground before connecting the shower to the macerating unit. For more details, see Section 1.2.1: Installation of Sanitary Fixtures WATER CLOSET ASSEMBLY

There is no need for further assembling of the water closet, as the product comes designed with an already assembled fill and flush valve. However, screws, nuts, bolts and other attachments must be carefully scrutinized to confirm if all the necessary connections are tight and secure OVERALL SYSTEM ASSEMBLY The step-by-step installation process for the overall system assembly is outlined below: 1. Choose a preferred spot and place the macerating unit there. Connect all waste pipes (both inlet and outlet) to the unit. For more details on this particular step, see Section 2.1: Preparation of the Macerating Unit and Section 2.6: Discharge Pipe Specifications and Connection. 2. Firmly hold the spigot outlet of the toilet bowl against the white accordion connector and then mark the floor through the holes in the bowl. 3. Remove the toilet bowl and then using a 5/16-inch drill bit, drill two holes having a depth of approximately 2 1/4 inches at the marked points. For a wooden floor, a 1/4-inch drill bit should be used and a pilot hole drilled instead. Once these holes have been created, insert plastic plugs into them. 4. Position the bowl in front of the macerating unit. Using the provided gear clamp, extend and attach the accordion gasket firmly to the rear spigot outlet at the back of the toilet. The gasket and gear clamp must be completely even. 5. Now, slide the bowl over the holes created in the floor. Tighten the lag screws and place plastic china protectors over the screws. Ensure everything is in order before fixing the plastic cover caps. 6. Set a foam gasket on the spud of the flush valve and over-nut of the tankto-bowl kit. Then, carefully place the tank on top of the bowl, insert the required screws and gasket through the tank and tighten the nuts at the bottom of the tank.

7. Attach the provided fixing lugs to keep the system stable and prevent the entire unit from moving when in use. For a well-detailed illustration depicting this installation process, see Page 3, Diagram 7a. Caution: Do not over-tighten nuts and screws, so as to avoid damage to any of the parts Installation Specifications for Soundproofing Technology To fully enjoy the benefits of the unit s soundproofing design, the following specifications must be put in place during the system s installation: Place the toilet bowl in a position where it does not come in contact with a wall or room partition. For the resilient mounts to function effectively, the bowl must be placed on a perfectly leveled surface. The distances between the fastenings and the discharge pipe must not exceed 3ft (1m) WATER SUPPLY SPECIFICATIONS AND CONNECTION The water supplied must have a minimum temperature of 1 o C and a maximum temperature of 90 o C. The temperature limits serve to prevent the unit from freezing and any damage arising from extreme heat. To provide a continuous source of water to the unit, simply connect the water supply hose to the fill valve. An external alarm system SVALARM can be purchased from your Silent Venus supplier. This alarm can be fitted to the lid of the macerating unit and serves to alert the user when the water level in the tank rises above the recommended level. The macerating unit pumps at a flow rate of 100 liters per minute DISCHARGE PIPE SPECIFICATIONS AND CONNECTION

The discharge pipe to be connected to the unit must have a diameter of 3/4 or 1 inch. It must be a ridged wall pipe. Flexible pipes or hose are not recommended as they eventually get distorted after a period of time. The discharge pipe should be made from 3/4-inch diameter materials such as copper (Type M), CPVC or PVC. To connect the discharge pipe to the macerating unit, refer to Section 2.1: Preparation of the Macerating Unit. It is advisable to install a union and a gate valve at the lower portion of the discharge pipe. This would aid the removal of the macerating unit if the need for such arises. For users wanting to pump in both vertical and horizontal directions, the following calculations should be used: 3 feet of a vertical lift is roughly equivalent to 30 feet of a horizontal run A bend or change in direction would result in some losses which must be deducted from the overall discharge performance. The usual practice is to reduce discharge height by 3 feet for each 90 turn. To achieve these bends or changes in directions, elbows or 90 o bends must not be used as it usually leads to blockages. Rather, radius or long turn bends should be used and this can be achieved by connecting two 45 o pieces back to back. The maximum vertical discharge lift is 6m, while the maximum horizontal discharge run is 100m. If the installation process seems tricky and too complex to manage on your own, we advise that you contact a plumbing contractor to do the job for you SEWER PIPE SPECIFICATIONS AND CONNECTIONS 1. Using a 1 1/2-inch branch hub, install a standard wye fitting connecting the discharge pipe to a sewer pipe. 2. If the discharge pipe is made of copper, purchase a brass male adapter ((MPT x Hub) 3/4" x 3/4" sweat) for the subsequent steps. If it is a CPVC pipe, then a CPVC male adapter ((MPT x Hub) 3/4" x 3/4" sweat) is recommended. 3. If the wye fitting is made of copper, solder a length of pipe to the adapter and allow it to cool. The cooling process can be accelerated if a wet rag is wound around the plastic during soldering. For effective soldering and to

prevent the plastic material from deteriorating, a minimum distance of 6 inches must be maintained between the plastic and the piece being soldered, and Teflon tape or 100% Teflon dope on male thread must be used. 4. Once the soldered piece has cooled, screw it into a female bushing ((spigot x FPT) 1 1/2" x 3/4"). 5. Then glue the bushing into the 1 1/2" branch hub of the wye fitting. 6. If the wye fitting is made of cast iron, PVC, CPVC or ABS, follow steps 1 and 2. Then, screw your male adapter into a female bushing ((spigot x FPT) 1 1/2" x 3/4") and implement step 5. Caution: Do not use ABS glue to join any CPVC material, as the glue would fail to properly bond the materials ELECTRICAL SUPPLY SPECIFICATIONS AND CONNECTIONS The macerating unit uses a motor with a power consumption of 400 watts and as such, requires a single-phase electrical supply rated 110volts, 60Hz. Users must ensure that this is installed in accordance with the current electrical regulations and codes applicable in their areas of residence. A fused spur with a rating of 3 amps must be mounted outside the room for safety purposes. If installed in the bathroom, the electrical socket or outlet must be positioned in a straight line 40 inches away from a shower or bathtub. In addition, the outlet must be protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) to avoid the danger of electric shock. The unit itself is equipped with a grounding conductor and a grounding type attachment plug to reduce the occurrence of such hazards. However, it is imperative that the electrical outlet the unit is connected to be properly grounded. All electrical connections and installations must be done by a certified electrician CONNECTING THE UNIT TO A VENT SYSTEM

Proper venting of the macerating unit ensures that the air pressure in the unit equals the air pressure outside the unit. All sanitary fittings connected to the macerator must also be vented. There are two inlets located on the surface of the macerator s cover: a 1 1/2-inch cap and a hole of smaller diameter. The hole must be sealed with a plastic cap provided in the product s packaging. For the required vent system, place the provided waste inlet on the cap and securely clamp it down. Complete the process by connecting a vent pipe. All connections must be done in accordance with recognized plumbing codes in your area of residence. For a well-detailed illustration depicting this installation process, see Page 3, Diagram 7d. Caution: Ensure that any venting device used in the installation process is a twoway valve so as to achieve the required air pressure balance. One-way valves such as a mechanical spring-loaded venting device or an air admittance valve, will only allow airflow in one direction ACTIVATING THE UNIT After completing the installation process, the following steps should be followed to successfully activate the macerating unit: 1. Before activating, remove any debris or dirt resulting from the installation process. 2. Open the shut-off valve and allow the tank to get filled. 3. Turn on the power supply. 4. Now, proceed to flush the toilet several times. Before each flush, drop a few sheets of toilet paper into the bowl. This is to test the effectiveness of the discharge piping. A satisfactory result would be the complete disappearance of the tissue from the bowl after flushing. 33

3. USAGE Silent Venus macerating units are designed solely for the disposal of human waste, toilet paper and water in residential buildings CONDITIONS OF MISUSE Using the unit for purposes and in situations apart from its intended function can lead to damages and void your warranty. The conditions of misuse include but are not restricted to: Disposal of sanitary items such as tampons, sanitary pads, cotton swabs and condoms. Disposal of food or kitchen waste, plastic bags, kitty litter, building materials or debris, wood and metallic objects such as nails and hairpins. Disposal of corrosive substances such as acids, alkaloids, solvents painting, and paint strippers. Placing bleach blocks or hydrochloride cleaners in the toilet tank, as they gradually weaken the plastic and neoprene components of the flush and fill valves and eventually cause leaks in the unit. Caution: The macerating unit is incapable of functioning without electricity. Therefore, once there is a power loss in your house, avoid using any sanitary fitting connected to the unit, including the toilet, until the power is restored PROPER HANDLING OF THE UNIT The macerating unit is designed to automatically start working immediately the toilet is flushed or the sink, shower or bathtub is used. In the same vein, once the waste have been successfully discharged into the sewer pipe or soil stack, the unit stops working. Its construction and mode of operation eliminates the need for daily maintenance. However, it is advisable to clean the unit once a year. When cleaning, avoid the use of bleach or any corrosive substance and ensure water does not seep into the electrical cord opening. The unit must not be completely submerged in water.

If the unit would not be used for a long period of time, either due to vacation or maintenance purposes, or even instances of power failure, ensure that the water supply to the tank is completely turned off. Then, flush the unit to remove the remaining water in the tank. Ensure there are no holes in the tank that might cause water to leak into the bowl. Completely shut off all faucets. Failure to do so would cause the tank to gradually fill up in a staccato start-and-stop pattern, resulting in the pump s motor heating up. This would eventually activate the thermal overload switch which would in turn stop the motor from working, and possibly cause a flood. The entire system must be properly winterized if used in very cold climes where freezing frequently occurs. Failure to winterize the system would void your warranty should any breakdown occur. The wintering process is simple and straightforward. Drain the macerator and all the pipes, as well as the toilet tank and bowl. Then, pour a jug of plumbers anti-freeze into the toilet s tank and flush the bowl. This will in turn cause the macerating unit to automatically start working. By so doing, any remaining drop of water in the system would be replaced with the anti-freeze DISPOSAL The unit is designed to give many trouble-free years of service. However, at the end of its life, be advised that the unit meets the current directive for disposal and must be handled in accordance with these standards.

4. PROBLEM SOLVING 4.1. CHECKUP Proper usage of the unit guarantees a reliable output for a very long time. However, if an incident occurs and the output or service gotten fails to meet up with previous outputs, and you wish to fix the situation yourself, endeavor to first perform a thorough checkup of the system. 1. Check the water supply and ensure it is turned on. 2. Check if the following electrical devices are on: the receptacle, breaker, and the G.F.C.I. unit. 3. Ensure the fuse is in perfect condition, the male plug is still connected to the receptacle, and the thermal overload switch has not been activated. Then wait for at least 20 minutes for the unit to reactivate. 4. Ensure that both the discharge and vent pipes are free from blockages. In a situation where the unit activates itself without the toilet being flushed or other sanitary fixtures used, the cause is most likely a leakage in the toilet tank causing water to steadily trickle into the bowl. It could also be as a result of the check valve and/or discharge pipe not being properly fitted DISASSEMBLING THE UNIT FOR SMALL FIXES If after thoroughly checking the unit, you feel there is a need to open it up to check for the presence of a foreign object obstructing proper flow, take the following actions for proper disassembling of the unit: 1. First turn off the water supply to the tank, then close the ball or gate valve on the outlet pipe. 2. Remove the unit s electrical cord from the receptacle (or power outlet). 3. Drain the toilet tank and bowl. Ensure little to no water is left there. To completely get rid of any remaining water, use a dry/wet type vacuum. 4. Disconnect the toilet from the macerating unit. For safety reasons, gently remove the toilet bowl and place it against a wall. 5. When removing the macerating unit, carefully disconnect the inlet drainpipes.

If after disassembling the unit, the problem lies with the side inlet valves being clogged up, simply remove the sleeves. Using a screwdriver, remove the rubber flap and clean it. Bend a piece of wire, insert it into the inlet and carefully remove the object causing the blockage RETURN AND REPAIR OF THE MACERATING UNIT In the event that a little disassembling and fixing is unable to repair the problem with the unit and as a result, it needs to be returned for service, do call our line to inquire about available return options. There is also the option of visiting an authorized repair shop in your locality. Units can only be returned if the manufacturer issues a return authorization. Any unit returned without a prior RGA number will not be collected. Once authorized, thoroughly clean and disinfect every part of the unit. A labor fee of $50 would be in effect for cleaning. When packing the unit for shipping using its original packaging, remove the discharge elbow as it might be damaged during shipping. Properly cover the unit with an adequate shock-absorbent material before sealing the package. A prepaid amount of $300 should be used to insure the package against loss or damage during transit before eventually shipping it to the manufacturer. If the package is sent after the warranty period has ended or if the user is responsible for the damage caused to the unit, then the burden of the repair costs will be shouldered by the user. The repair costs must have been fully paid before any repairs on the unit would be carried out.

5. MAINTENANCE For proper and normal maintenance of your macerating unit, see Section 4.1: Checkup and Section 4.2: Disassembling the Unit for Small Fixes. For a more intense and thorough maintenance and repair, see the subsequent sections and below. However, these steps must be carried out by a certified plumber or any other qualified personnel DISASSEMBLING THE UNIT (FOR SERIOUS REPAIRS OR SERVICING) 1. Disconnect the discharge elbow. Unclip the unit s lid and gently remove it. Sometimes, the lid can be stuck firmly to the case and this makes its removal a very exerting process. 2. To remove the motor from the case, loosen the motor-retaining screws and disconnect the insulator cable linking it to the lid. Then, carefully lift out the motor assembly. Caution: Do not remove the dielectric oil in the motor or attempt to replace it with regular oil. Dismantling the motor assembly is strongly prohibited as the seals on the motor s lid and the clips keeping the motor parts together may get damaged during the process. If you do attempt to still proceed with disassembling the motor, do keep in mind that Silent Venus distributors do not have seals, bearings, or oil in stock PUMP CHECKUP Impeller Check If the impeller is not working properly, follow these steps: 1. The pump chamber is located at the base of the motor, hence the need to invert the motor in order to access the pump. 2. Unclip the pump cover plate. To release the impeller from the spindle, block the spindle and unscrew the impeller in a counterclockwise direction. 3. Once the impeller has been properly removed, thoroughly clean it to remove any obstruction. Also clean the discharge elbow and pipes to remove any remaining blockages. 4. Ensure the drive shaft is rotating freely and that the air relief-hole on the chamber wall is free of any impediment.

Removal of Cutter Blades Cutter blades are very sharp and should they ever need to be replaced, their removal must be handled with extreme care. 1. Remove the circlip on top of the blade or rotor assembly. This circlip connects the blade assembly to the spindle. 2. With the circlip removed, simply lift blade assembly off the spindle and slide the blade sideways for easy removal REASSEMBLING THE LID After any maintenance or repair work, the lid must be properly placed back on the case. Place the rubber gasket inside the lid. The gasket should then be greased with soapy water or dishwasher liquid. To attach the lid to the case, first push the lid down at the cord side. Then, gradually work your way around by tapping on the lid with a rubber mallet or bloc. Caution: Vaseline should not be used in greasing the gasket as it might cause the neoprene materials in the lid and case to expand..

6. HANDY TIPS AND ADVICE SUPPORT YOUR PIPES Ensure that all sanitary pipes used are properly supported in accordance with the pipe manufacturer s recommendations. Avoid practices such as dipping or trapping, as these may cause build-up and eventual blockage. USE LONG BENDS Avoid the use of short elbows. Rather, make use of long sweeping bends. Two 45 o elbows can be joined together to give a 90 o bend if a sweeping 90 elbow is not available. INSTALL VERTICALLY FIRST Any vertical lift must be done before a horizontal pipe run. If a horizontal pipe run from the unit already exists before a vertical lift, then the run must not be greater than inches. DIRECTLY VERTICAL All vertical lifts should be constructed in a straight line directly above the unit as possible. Any bends or curves should be only allowed at the point where the pipes cross the toilet tank. EASY ACCESS The unit should be installed in such a way that it can be easily accessed, maintained, and if need be, removed. A full-port ball valve should be installed at the base of any vertical discharge pipe from the unit to allow for easy service of the unit.

WORKS VIA GRAVITY Wastewater is not suctioned into the unit. Rather, the unit collects the waste using gravity. To make this possible, all inlet pipes must have a gravity fall of 1/4 inch per foot). All horizontal piping from the macerating unit must also have a positive gravity fall to allow for free drainage when the pump stops. NO DIRECT FALL In the event where the point of discharge into the sewer pipe or soil stack is considerably lower than the unit s base, a relief valve should be installed at the highest point in the pipe run. THREE FEET MINIMUM The macerating unit must be installed at a minimum distance of 3 feet from the soil stack. This allows the macerator to operate for a significant period of time to ensure efficient waste reduction. SOIL STACK CONNECTION A tee or wye fitting should be used to connect the discharge pipe to the soil stack. PIPE RULES All pipes should be made of either copper, PVC or CPVC. Do not use flexible pipes. To prevent pipes from rattling, hangers should be well spaced from one another with a minimum distance of 3 feet.

NO DIAGONAL UPHILL PIPE RUNS No pipe running from the unit to the point of discharge should be installed with a diagonal upward slope. Pipe runs must either be directly vertical or in a horizontal plane. NO ILLEGAL DISCHARGE Always discharge waste into the appropriate sanitary waste systems. Discharging into open drains, fixtures, manholes or rainwater drainpipes is illegal and poses as a serious health hazard. ANTI-FREEZING TIP All pipe work susceptible to freezing must be adequately insulated. In unheated buildings or areas prone to freezing, the entire system must be drained and properly winterized with plumber s anti-freeze. ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND PROTECTION Ensure that the macerating system is connected to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) for proper grounding and protection. The unit should be disconnected from a power source before any maintenance or repair work.

7. TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE Problem Causes Solution Motor humming but will not clear toilet or other connected sanitary fittings. Blockage in the unit. This could be due to any of the following: 1. Something other than toilet paper has blocked the motor 2. The outlet has become blocked 1. Disconnect the unit from the power supply 2. Using a siphon, drain the toilet bowl and the macerating unit. 3. Remove the bowl and check for any obstruction 4. If no impediment is found, remove the lid of the unit 5. Remove the rubber tank and the motor as a single unit from the case 6. Undo the clip connecting the motor to the tank 7. Loosen the ring of screws on the motor pump 8. Remove the blockage 9. Reassemble the unit by redoing the above steps in reverse order 10. Reconnect and check Motor runs but stops and starts Blockage in the outlet pipe 1. Lift off the unit s lid and check if there is a foreign object stuck in the nonreturn valve. 2. Insert a short length of pipe into the outlet and run it into a bucket. 3. Flush the toilet to check if the unit is working properly without stopping.

Motor silent 1. Loss of power 2. Faulty pressure switch 1. Check if the unit is properly connected to an electric supply. Replace fuse if damaged or burnt. 2. Press the manual override button several times The motor should run after taking these steps. If not, the fault lies with the motor itself. Pressure switch not working Faulty switch 1. Check the small plastic pipe covering the switch for any blockages 2. Remove the plastic pipe to access the switch 3. Check the pressure by using a rubber ball to create pressure. If a click is heard, the switch is working. Simply ensure the unit is connected to a power source and the motor should run.
