2 Safety Precautions IMPORTANT! READ THIS IRST Observe the following safety precautions at all times when running the Tack Sealer. Be sure you know how to switch the machine off in the event of an emergency. Do not try to use this machine until you have read these and fully understand its operation. Keep loose clothing, long hair and jewellery clear of all moving parts. Do not touch any moving parts. When opening the covers, ensure that all moving parts have come to a halt before touching them. Do not attempt to dismantle any part of the machine, or remove any fixed covers - this could result in risk of electric shock or fire. If service attention is required, call a P E Service Engineer. If damage to any cover has occurred, it must be replaced by a P E Service Engineer. If any access cover safety switch fails allowing the machine to continue operating when the cover is opened, call a P E Service Engineer immediately. Do not cover any vents or openings, or overheating may result. Avoid placing any objects on top of the machine - they could topple off and create a safety hazard. Do not attempt to operate the machine with product outside the limits shown in the specifications. Ensure you have free access all round the machine for loading paper hoppers etc. Do not place surrounding furniture or other objects where your path may be obstructed. The machine is heavy and must use a stand capable of supporting its weight. PUT SA ETY IRST! Page 2

3 Section 1 - Introduction The Tack Sealer V Fold range consists of three machines. The AS100 EasiSeal V-folds pressure seal paper and lightly seals all three edges. The sealed edges can be separated by pulling them apart, so tear-off strips are not used. The AS150 SafeSeal V-folds pressure seal paper and lightly seals the width edge, but permanently seals the length edges, which have tear-off strips. The AS200 FastSeal V-folds pressure seal paper and permanently seals all three edges. Tear-off strips are used on all edges. Each one of the above 3 machines is available in either sheet-feed or on-line versions. The on-line version consists of a printer interface in place of the paper hopper and a plinth to mount the printer. Note: the printer must be fitted with a Duplex unit. A number of different compatible printers can be used, including the following: Kyocera 3750 & 3800 HP 2200DTN, 4050TN, 4100, 4200, 4300 & 9000 Oki C7500 Lexmark T620 Other printers may also be suitable - contact PFE Technical Support Department before attempting to use any other models. 6 Section 4 - the Machine 4.1 Calibrating for Double Documents Each time the machine is switched on, it must be calibrated for double document detection. Thereafter, if two documents are fed together, the machine will stop and indicate an error by flashing the LED indicator 4 times in succession. To calibrate, simply hold down the green Run button for about 3 seconds after loading a single form into the paper hopper (see fig. 4.2 below for details of loading the paper hopper). The form will be fed through the machine and used as the calibration gauge, so if you change the paper type, calibrate the machine again. 4.2 Loading the paper hopper Note: this applies to the sheet feed version only - for on-line versions, load the paper into the printer hopper as described in the User Guide for the printer. Fan the stack of paper (max. 100 sheets) to ensure no sheets are stuck together. See note below for paper orientation. Press the tray down and load the forms so the leading edges are firmly seated. Release the tray. Adjust the moving side guide to provide about 2mm clearance. Pull out the receiving tray to its full extent. Note: Paper must loaded into the paper hopper with address trailing and facing backwards (ie. towards hopper). For on-line versions (which must include a printer fitted with a Duplex unit), the paper would normally be loaded with address leading and facing down, or if using the MP tray, address leading and face up. This may vary, depending upon the printer - run a sample to test. è Page 6

7 4.3 Running the machine Sheet Feed Version Press the green Start button to begin operating the machine, and the red Stop button to stop. On-line Version While switching on the power, press and hold the green Start button and red Stop button together for 3 seconds to put the machine into on-line mode. Thereafter, only the Start button need be pressed to begin operating the machine, and the red Stop button to stop. On-line mode will be retained in memory, even after switching off the power - to reset to sheet feed mode, press and hold the Stop button for 3 seconds on power-up. On both versions, it is advisable to stop the machine after one or two forms have fed and examine them to check that the folds are correct and they are properly sealed. If a double document occurs (ie. two sheets are fed together), the machine will stop and the LED indicator will flash 4 times in succession - this pattern will repeat after a short pause. To clear a double document, see section 5 Clearing Paper Jams. Page 7

8 Section 5 - Clearing Paper Jams If a paper jam occurs, the machine will stop and the LED indicator will flash in a sequence depending upon the location of the jam, as described below. The sequence will repeat with short pauses in between. 1 flash: Jam in interface (on-line version only) 2 flashes: Jam in paper hopper (sheet-fed version only) 3 flashes: Jam at output 4 flashes: Double document detected (jam probably in fold rollers) To clear a jam inside the machine, lower the front cover and see if the jammed paper is visible in the feeder or output area. If so, attempt to pull it out backwards - if it is jammed too tightly, turn the rollers to wind it out. If the paper has jammed in the fold plate, this can be easily removed for clearance. Pull forward the bottom edge of the plate and lift it out - the edge is held down by a magnetic strip. When replacing the plate, ensure that the mounting lugs are properly located on the slots. 9 Section 6 - Cleaning Sensors There are a number of optical sensors on the machine which require cleaning from time to time to prevent them becoming obstructed by paper dust. These should be cleaned using a non-flammable airduster, such as supplied by PFE (part number E0070A). It is important that only a non-flammable airduster is used, or gaseous residues may be ignited by the motor. Sensors should always be cleaned if a long run is envisaged, or if operating faults occur. Each sensor is in two halves, spaced slightly apart - both halves must be cleaned. Hold Point Sensor and Printer Interface Sensor The hold point sensor is located at the back of the machine, seen after removing the paper hopper on the sheet feed version by lifting it upwards off the hooked lugs. For the on-line version, the printer interface will need to be removed first, by lifting it upwards off the hooked lugs after sliding back the printer on its runners. The sensor is just to the left of the feed roller, as shown. The printer interface sensor (on-line versions only) is on the input chute, as shown below. Note: after replacing the printer interface, ensure that the moveable side guide is set as wide as possible. Spray the airduster liberally into the arrowed positions.
