4 1. Overview Slot-Die coating is an advanced thin film deposition technique that can be incorporated into scalable deposition processes such as roll-to-roll and sheet-to-sheet systems. The technique is part of a class of coating techniques called metered coating techniques, in which the thickness of the deposited layers is solely dependent upon the rate of solution flow and the speed at which the substrate moves. At Ossila we have developed a compact slot-die coating system that is aimed at research and development teams who are looking to transition from techniques that are incompatible with large scale processing, such as spin coating, towards slot-die coating. Our Slot-Die Coating System has been designed specifically so that is easy to maintain, operate, and affordably priced all without compromising on the quality of the coating that can be achieved. The system incorporates our high precision syringe pump for accurate and reproducible flow rates, essential for controlling thin film thicknesses. The substrate stage can be levelled with respect to the head to within 1μm.cm -1 of travel by using our simple three-point levelling system combined with high accuracy height gauges. Additionally, the stage incorporates a heating element allowing you to elevate the temperature of your substrate to 120 C. All of this is controlled internally with our simple to use in-built software which can be operated using our touch pad and display, saving you from operating the system using an external computer. The slot-die head used for solution distribution is made from stainless-steel to give maximum compatibility with chemicals. The internal design of the head uses a simple coat hanger manifold to distribute the solution evenly across the width of coating resulting in minimal thickness variation across the coating width. Finally, the height of the head can be precisely controlled with the use of micrometres allowing you to have a stable coating bead even for very thin films. ossila.com 4 Ossila Limited 2017

Safety 3.1 Warning Warning Only use the 24V power adapter and power cord supplied with the unit If using flammable or hazardous solvents, users are expected to be trained in their usage and carry out a risk assessment Keep the area around the machine clear, approximately a 1 m clearance above and 30 cm to the sides Keep clear of the machine while it is in operation If using hazardous solvents always use within a fume hood or controlled environment Pinch points when in operation, keep hands clear of moving parts Hot plate temperatures can result in severe burns, use caution when operating at elevated temperatures. The LED will blink when the hotplate is heating up and will remain on once it has reached set temperature 3.2 Use of Equipment This Slot-Die Coater is designed to be used as instructed, it is intended to be used under the following conditions: Indoors in a laboratory environment (pollution degree 2) Altitudes up to 2000 m Temperatures of 5 C to 40 C; maximum relative humidity of 80% up to 31 C. The Slot-Die Coater is supplied with a 24VDC/6.25A power adapter with a power cord for the country of purchase, in accordance with European Commission regulations and British Standards. Use of any other electrical power cables, adaptors or transformers is not recommended. 3.3 Hazard Icons The following symbols can be found at points throughout the rest of the manual. WARNING: Improper handling when operating or servicing this equipment can result in serious injury. Read this manual before operating or servicing this equipment. I. CAUTION: During operation, the movement of the plunger clamp, the stage, and the rotation of the lead screw/coupler could result in a pinch point and/or entanglement hazard. Caution should be taken whenever the system is in operation. 3.5 Power Cord Safety I. Emergency power disconnect options: Use the power cord as a disconnecting method and remove it from the power source. To facilitate disconnect, make sure the power outlet for this cord is readily accessible to the operator. 3.6 Servicing If servicing is required, please return the unit to Ossila Ltd. Any other action will void the warranty. 3.7 Health and Safety Installation I. Pinch point and entanglement hazards are present during operation of the syringe pump. As a precaution users should avoid handling or leaning over the equipment during operation in order to avoid possible crushing or entanglement of hair and/or clothing. The unit weights just under 10 kg, care should b taken when handling or moving the unit. 3.8 Health and Safety Servicing I. Service or installation work that includes integrating electrical components should only be performed by an Ossila engineer. Never alter the wiring of any purchased ossila.com 7 Ossila Limited 2017

8 equipment. If changes are made, such alterations may damage the equipment, cause injury, or death. At the very least, such alterations will void your equipment s warranty. 3.9 Emergency Stop The slot-die coater is fitted with an emergency stop button which can be used in case of emergencies, examples of emergencies could include the trapping of objects within pinch points. When pressed the emergency power button cuts off the power to the system, a buzzer will turn on to indicate that the button has been pressed. The emergency stop button will remain pressed until the button is rotated clockwise and released. To restart the system, the power button at the back of the unit should be turned off and on again after the emergency stop button has been released. The emergency stop button should not be used for powering down the system after use and should only be used in emergency situations. Figure 3.1 Emergency stop button mounted to the front of the slot die coater Tube Clip A tube clip has been provided with the system, the clip chain attaches to the slot die head using a simple washer. The clip itself can then be attached to any PTFE tubing that is connected to the system, the clip is used to keep the tubing in place. This ensures that if the polypropylene connector becomes damaged during pumping that the solution does not escape the system. 11 6. System Components The Slot-Die Coater L2005-XX comes with the following components: Slot Die Coater Unit (Figure 6.1). Power supply cord and power supply ( Figure 6.2). 13 7. Installation 1. Place the unit on a solid, level surface. i. Ensure the area is free from vibrations, temperature extremes and highly flammable or explosive materials. Keep the area surrounding the machine clear, with approximately 1 m clearance above the machine and around 30 cm clearance on the sides. 2. Before plugging in the Slot-Die Coater, ensure the power switch on the unit is switched to the 0 position (off). 3. Connect the power supply connector to the Slot-Die Coater. i. See Figure 7.1 for connecting the Slot Die Coater to the power supply cable. 4. Switch the Slot-Die Coater power switch to the 1 position to turn on. Figure 7.1. 17 8.3 Practical Operation When using volatile solvents place the slot-die coater within a fume hood or controlled environment such as a glovebox. For using the slot die coater system a general start up procedure should be followed before coating should begin. There are four stages to this, these are; the levelling of the stage, installation of the slot-die head, installing the syringe, and checking the hotplate temperature Levelling the Stage 1. Turn the system on and enter manual mode. 2. Zero the height gauges relative to the slot-die head I. Using the button move the stage so that the height gauge rollers are no longer contacting the stage. II. Turn the digital micrometres on and set them to zero 3. Level the stage across the width I. Using the button move the stage so that the rollers are on the top surface of the stage. II. Using the left and right adjustment wheels at the back of the stage level the micrometres relative to each other III. Zero both digital micrometres 4. Level the stage across the length I. Using the button move the stage so that the rollers are now situated at the opposite end of the stage. II. Using the front adjustment wheel vary the height of the front end of the stage till the micrometres read close to zero on both sides 5. Return the stage to the starting position by pressing home, the system should be roughly level here. To increase the accuracy of the levelling repeat steps 3 and Installation of the Slot-Die Head 1. Make sure that the stainless-steel heads and are free of dirt or dust before assembling as these will cause defects within the coating 2. Select the shim width needed for the substrate you wish to coat and the shim thickness. Each shim is 100μm thick, add the required number of shims to get the gap thickness required 3. Sandwich the shims between the two slot-die head and using the four corner screws to clamp the slot-die head together 4. Place the Luer Lock adapter through the washer at the end of the tube clip chain. Attach the stainless-steel Luer lock adapter to the slot die head 5. Using the two bolt on screws attach the slot-die head to the slot-die system via the two gantry threaded holes Installing the Syringe 1. 18 2. Pre-load the solution into the syringe i. Make sure all air bubbles are removed from the syringe ii. iii. Connect the PTFE tubing and adapter to the end of the syringe and the slot-die head Luer lock adapter Place the end of the tube clip onto a section of the PTFE tubing. 3. Lock the syringe barrel to the syringe pump i. The syringe barrel should be placed flat into the groove on the syringe holder ii. The barrel top should be placed inside the clamping mechanism iii. Lower the top clamping arm onto the top of the syringe and lock it into place by tightening the wing nut on the side of the syringe holder iv. Clamp the barrel top to the system by tightening the wing nut screws in front of the barrel 4. Attach the plunger to the syringe drivers moving block i. Enter manual mode and using the button move the block to the end of the syringe plunger ii. Slide the end of the plunger into the clamping mechanism iii. Tighten the clamp by tightening the wing nut screws at the back of the moving block 5. Pre-Load the Slot-Die head i. Using manual mode move the plunger to push solution through the PTFE tubing and fill the slot die head cavities ii. Keep moving the plunger until a small quantity of solution appears out of the slot die cavity Setting and Checking the Hotplate Temperature 1. Set the hotplate temperature i. Enter the settings screen and select hotplate temperature ii. Set the temperature of the stage iii. Wait until the temperature value stops flashing 2. Check the hotplate temperature and add any offset required i. The surface temperature of the hotplate may vary slightly from the value stated due to factors such as air flow across the surface and external temperatures ii. Use a thermocouple or IR thermometer and check the temperature of the hotplate surface iii. 20 2. After the Ossila logo page, the user has to reset the stage to home position by pressing OK button. While the stage moving to home position, the following message is shown on the screen. 21 8.4.4 SETTING MODE 1. To enter setting mode, press setting button located at the bottom left-hand side of the screen. 2. To turn the hotplate ON, navigate to the Hotplate line and press OK button turn ON the hotplate. The Heater LED will be blinking ON/OFF while the hotplate is heating and solid ON when it reaches the set temperature. User can turn OFF the hotplate by pressing OK button again. Note: The Hotplate icon on the screen will blink RED while the hotplate is ON. ossila.com 21 Ossila Limited 2017

22 3. User can set the hotplate temperature by navigating to the Hotplate temp line and press OK button to edit the value. User can navigate between the digit by pressing LEFT and RIGHT buttons. To change the value of the selected digit, press UP and DOWN buttons. Press OK again to exit the edit mode. The maximum set value allowed is 120 C. 4. Surface temperature of the hotplate may be slightly different from the actual reading. In case of user requires to set exact temperature value on the surface, temperature offset can be set by navigate to Temp offset line and press OK button to edit. User can navigate between the digit by pressing LEFT and RIGHT buttons. To change the value of the selected digit, press UP and DOWN buttons. Press OK again to exit the edit mode. 23 User can set temperature offset by ±10 C. To change the sign for Temp offset, navigate to the sign and press UP or DOWN to change it. 5. To change the syringe size, navigate to the Syringe size line and press OK button to enter edit mode. To change to different sizes of the syringe, press LEFT or RIGHT button to scroll between the pre-set size. Press OK again to exit the edit mode. ossila.com 23 Ossila Limited 2017

24 Note: In program mode, if the different syringe size selected, the syringe icon value will be updated. The user can set custom size of the syringe by selecting Cust. The system will ask the user to input the diameter of the custom syringe. User can navigate between the digit by pressing LEFT and RIGHT buttons. 25 If the user does not set the diameter value, the warning will appear on the screen to notify the user. 6. The stage position is tracked across the slot die coater operation. The user allows to set new HOME position for the system during current operation. To set the new stage home position, navigate to Stage Home line and press OK button to edit. Press HOME button to set the new Home position based on stage current position. Press OK again to exit the edit mode. 26 8.4.5 MANUAL MODE 1. To enter Manual Mode, press manual button located at the top left-hand side of the screen. The stage is pre-selected in Manual Mode. Press UP button to select Stage if not selected. Stage has pre-set speed value of 0.25 mm/s, 1.00 mm/s, 2.50 mm/s and 5.00 mm/s. To change the speed, press OK button to choose the desired speed for manual move. ossila.com 26 Ossila Limited 2017

27 To move the stage position manually, press LEFT or RIGHT button. The position will be automatically calculated. 2. To select the syringe, press DOWN button. Syringe has pre-set speed value of 0.25 mm/s, 1.00 mm/s, 2.50 mm/s and 5.00 mm/s. The Rate of the syringe is calculated based on the selected syringe size in Setting Mode. To change the rate, press OK button to choose the desired speed for manual move. ossila.com 27 Ossila Limited 2017

29 User can navigate across the line by pressing UP or DOWN button and press OK to edit the value. To change the program number, navigate to program, press OK to edit and press Up or DOWN to edit the program number. 2. To change the number of step in the program, navigate to steps line and press OK to edit the value. Press UP or DOWN to change the value. 30 3. To change individual step parameters value, navigate to Current Step line. Press OK to enter edit mode, and press UP and DOWN to change the value. Press OK again to exit edit mode. The user also can press LEFT or RIGHT button to change the step number without entering edit mode. 4. In each step, user can set coating length, coating speed and dispense rate. To edit the coating length, navigate to Coating length line and press OK to edit. The digit cursor will appear under the number. User can navigate between the digit by pressing LEFT and RIGHT ossila.com 30 Ossila Limited 2017

31 buttons. To change the value of the selected digit, press UP and DOWN buttons. Press OK again to exit the edit mode. If the coating length is set above the maximum length allowed, the warning will appear to notify the user. The system will automatically calculate the remaining length and set it in the current step used. 5. To change the coating speed for the current step, navigate to the Coating speed line and press OK to edit. The digit cursor will appear under the number. User can navigate between the digit by pressing LEFT and RIGHT buttons. To change the value of the selected digit, press UP and DOWN buttons. Press OK again to exit the edit mode. 32 6. To change the dispense rate for the current step, navigate to the Dispense rate line and press OK to edit. The digit cursor will appear under the number. User can navigate between the digit by pressing LEFT and RIGHT buttons. To change the value of the selected digit, press UP and DOWN buttons. Press OK again to exit the edit mode. The dispense rate is calculated based on the syringe size set by the user as shown on the top right-hand side of the screen with syringe logo. In case of the dispense rate is set above the maximum rate of the syringe, the warning will appear on the screen. Press OK to continue and the system will auto correct the rate to maximum rate value for set syringe. ossila.com 32 Ossila Limited 2017

33 7. To change the next step parameters value, user can navigate between the step by pressing LEFT and RIGHT button without enter edit mode. User can edit the coating length for second step by repeating the sixth step (step 6). ossila.com 33 Ossila Limited 2017

34 The maximum coating length allowed is 100 mm. In case of the total length exceeded the maximum value, the warning will appear on the screen to notify the user. Press OK to continue and the system will auto correct the value in current step to give total of 100mm across the steps. ossila.com 34 Ossila Limited 2017

35 8.4.7 RUNNING 1. Once all the parameters are set, user can run the operation by pressing START button. In case of one step of the coating speed is not set, the warning will appear to notify the user and abort running until the speed is set. User are allowed to start coating at any position of the stage by positioning the stage in Manual Mode. However, the position is tracked so that it will not exceed travel distance (100 mm). In case of user set the total coating length plus the initial stage position exceeded 100 mm travel distance, the warning will appear to notify the user and ask the user to reset to HOME position or change the coating length. ossila.com 35 Ossila Limited 2017

36 8.5 Operational Safety Any procedure that is done with the slot die coater should be done with a suitable operating procedure, risk assessment, and COSHH forms to ensure that the user knows and understands the potential hazards inherent to the system of work they are undertaking. The following are safety points that should be noted by the user before any procedure is undertaken with the slot-die coater Pinch Points Both the syringe pump and the moving stage present the risk of pinch points to the user, it is recommended that before using the system any loose articles of clothing and hair is tied back or secured. In addition, we recommend that during the running of programmes or the manual movement of either the syringe pump or the stage that users do not place their hands near the moving sections Hot Plate The hot plate can be programmed to reach temperatures as high as 120 C, extreme care should be taken when placing substrate and removing substrates when the temperature is elevated above 50 C. In addition, risk assessments should consider potential fire hazards that can occur when heating solvents to high temperatures. Many common solvents used within laboratories can be heated above the flash point leading to a risk of ignition Sources of Ignition Heated solvents can often be pushed beyond the flash point in which any source of ignition can set alight the solvent. To minimize this risk users should ensure that no sources of ignition are placed close to the slot-die coating system Fire Hazard In the unlikely situation where solvents on the hotplate have caught fire the system is designed to contain any solvents either on the hotplate itself or on the baseplate underneath. 37 spread of fire. Users are also recommended to leave at least 300mm of space surrounding the entire system free from any other objects to reduce that chances of any fire spreading. 9. Maintenance 9.1 Cleaning Maintenance consists of periodic cleaning. The exterior of the instrument can be cleaned with a clean, dry cloth to remove any oil, grease, or grime. Never use liquid solvents or detergents. Repairs or servicing not covered in this manual should only be performed by qualified personnel. 9.2 Repair & Service The rail guide and the lead screw should be sparingly lubricated periodically; every 200 hrs of usage. The rail guide and the lead screw should be lubricated with Super Lube Synthetic Grease provided with the system. ossila.com 37 Ossila Limited 2017

If it has blown, replace with a suitably rated 5A quick blow fuse Contact Ossila for a replacement power supply adapter If all the above causes have been considered, there may be a fault on the board. Please contact Ossila for information Motor Stalled (Syringe Pump) Syringe plunger hitting bottom, a kink in the tubing (occlusion) Increase the force percentage in setting mode. Syringe plunger binding Increase the force percentage in setting mode. Low force setting Increase the force percentage in setting mode. Crash Warning The secondary safety switch has accidentally been triggered Turn the unit off and on again to see if the warning remains The syringe holder is triggering the secondary safety switch Rotate the lead screw by hand to move the syringe holder closer to the centre of travel.
