3 Dehumidifying the basement: You need both ventilation and heating to dehumidify the basement effectively. Figure 1 shows the importance of ventilation during the first hour and the constantly increasing influence of the heating. A SolarVenti Basement Kit provides both at the same time: The Solar Air Collector blows preheated fresh outdoor air into the basement and the exhaust kit ensures that the humid air is sucked out of the basement. The size and weight of the K-panels are exactly the same as the ordinary SV-panels. The only difference is the size of the solar cell (18 W in SV14K & SV20K, 2x 12 W in SV30K) and the position of the solar cell and air inlet, respectively in the top and bottom of the panel. The bigger solar cell in the Solar Air Collector runs both the injection and the exhaust fan. A high air exchange is needed: The indoor air has to be exchanged approximately once an hour, in order to get the needed ventilation in the basement. Comparatively it is only twice an hour in an allotment. Due to the need of a high air exchange the SolarVenti Basement Panels cover a smaller area than the equivalent panels for cottages and allotments. An SV14K thus suits a basement area of 55 m 2, where comparatively a SV14 suits an allotment of 80 m 2. Figure 2: This solution is the best, when the temperature of the air injected is higher than the room temperature, which typically will be the case with a Solar Air Collector. The extraction placed close to the ground forces the air to move through the entire basement. injection We thus recommend the extraction close to the ground, in order to provide the most effective dehumidification especially when dehumidifying a bigger basement. The ventilation efficiency will thus be 100%. Please make sure that you don t do it with bigger basements, because you risk that the injected air doesn t mix with the air in the room and linger only in the upper part of the basement. The ventilation efficiency falls to 40-70%. (Source: The Danish Bygningsreglement BR10 and Ventilationsnorm DS447) Ventilate the entire basement The Exhaust kit is mounted, so the air automatically moves trough the entire basement (see figure 2). As far as possible the air inlet must always be installed in the most dry room and the outlet in the room containing most humidity. In this way you don t risk the humid air to spread through the entire basement. An additional fan can be bought and be connected to an additional solar cell, if the architecture of the basement require another fan or you want to avoid long cabling between the injection and extraction. 5 Solutions for the basement: Basements are very different from each other. This fact makes it impossible to offer only one solution fitting to all basements. This handbook gives you an overview of our accessories for basement installation and further inspiration for solutions, we don t provide as ready to go kits. 6 The inlet 1 Air is blown directly into the basement Appliance: This direct mounting of the Solar Air Collector without any further accessory kit is the easiest installation and fits in situations, where the Solar Air Collector can be mounted directly on the outer wall of the basement and there is space for an inlet without additional downward going pipes at the same time. 7 The outlet 2a Basic Exhaust Kit 2b Pro Exhaust Kit Appliance: The Basic Exhaust Kit fits for smaller basements, where the outlet can be placed above ground level. Appliance: The Pro Exhaust Kit ensures that the air moves through the entire basement. Thus you avoid unventilated, moist areas. It is fitting especially for basements of bigger size. 8 Add-on 3 Add-on: Downward going pipe Appliance: With the Basement Extension Kit you get the possibility to mount the SolarVenti further upwards on the wall with an extension pipe, which goes down along the outer wall to the basement. The Add-on suites situations, where bushes etc. shades the lower part of the outer wall and a good solar radiation can be achieved through the mounting of the Solar Air Collector further upwards. 9 Add-on 4 Add-on: Tilted Appliance: Tilted from the wall the Solar Air Collector reaches a higher temperature during the summer - and thus ensure a more efficient dehumidification. The add-on suits for situations, where a overhang, shades a big area of the outer wall. When using the brackets the Solar Air Collector can get a small distance to the wall, and may get a better solar radiation. Used vertically the stands may provide the Solar Air Collector with a better solar radiation, if e.g. the house doesn t have a wall to the south. 10 Underground solutions There are many different possible solutions for how to make a SolarVenti installation with pipes underground. The SolarVenti panels fit with all types of pipes, which have a diameter of 125 mm. You can be creative and evaluate yourself, which kind of underground installation you want to make in the specifik case. You find some suggestions here, which you can use as an inspiration to make your own underground solution. Be always aware of the applicable building regulations and adjust the solution to the local conditions (level of groundwater, earth consistency etc.). Make a waterproofed installation In any circumstance you need to make a waterproofed installation. If you wish to dig an air shaft or rather want to put pipes directly in the earth underground can vary from case to case - and is also a question of likes and dislikes. 11 Roof installations We recommend to buy a Solar Air Collector with a duct fan in aluflex instead of a build in fan, if the Solar Air Collector has to be mounted on the roof and the air has to go down through pipes all the way to the basement. The duct fan in aluflex, which is placed at the level of the basement, is very efficient in the cases, where you have an installation with a long pipe. The duct fan in aluflex is able to pull the air through the pipes instead of pushing it all the way down.
