Page 2 INTRODUCTION Thank you for selecting this product from the large range of products manufactured in Australia by Thermoline Scientific. The materials incorporated in this design have been carefully selected for their durability, technical performance, and practicability, the resultant product is one we are proud of. THE MANUAL Please familiarise yourself with the information contained in this manual before using the equipment. Ensure that the manual is kept safe but accessible for current and future operators to refer to. UNPACKING Remove the equipment from the packing material, check that it is complete. Assemble the components and inspect for damage. Retain the packaging materials until the equipment has been thoroughly tested. Notify the detail of any damage without delay to your supplier, or Thermoline Scientific. LOCATION Place the equipment in a well-ventilated area on a firm surface. Confirm that the power supply is suitable for this equipment. Refer to the equipment rating plate for details. To control temperature effectively, the equipment should be located in a stable ambient, with adequate ventilation for the cooler. A minimum of 300mm at either side should be allowed. WARNING: Ensure that the electrical outlet is earthed and is of the correct voltage and is capable of carrying the stated current load. INTENDED USE This equipment is used to extract excessive heat from many types of equipment using an accuracy controlled, refrigerated and heated source of fluid under pressure, circulated through a closed circuit. WARNING: Do not use flammable solvents or combustible materials as fire or explosion may occur. This equipment uses components which may be a source of ignition.
Page 3 FUNCTION To provide an accurate controlled temperature between +5.0 C to C. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION The recirculatory-refrigerated cooler consists of a heat exchanger (coil) located within an insulated stainless steel conditioning tank. The heat exchanger (coil) is connected to an air-cooled refrigeration system using R507 Refrigerant. Fluid is circulated through a closed circuit, which includes the equipment to be cooled via a high capacity pump. The desired operating temperature is set at the digital microprocessor control. A signal from the RTD Pt100 sensor, located within a protective tube in the conditioning tank, is monitored at the controller. The temperature control operates solenoid valves to control the flow of refrigerant rather than turning off the compressor. This results in a much more accurate and stable temperature control than you would find in most coolers of this type. The circulating pump runs continuously directing fluid from the cooler to the equipment to be cooled. Upon exiting the heat exchanger, the fluid returns to the cooler for reconditioning. Note: When working at or below +10 C, an anti freeze such as ethylene glycol should be included with the cooling fluid at a mixture of 15 to 25% ethylene glycol to water. This will ensure that ice will not form inside the tank. PERFORMANCE The operating range for this equipment is +5.0 C to C (using suitable fluid) with a control accuracy of ± 0.5 C. MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE For this product is C. C-TICK The equipment referred to here complies with requirement of AS/NZS 1044:1995 electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Page 4 INSTALLATION AND OPERATION: 1) Place the equipment in a well-ventilated area, on a firm level surface and ensure that a suitable power supply is available. Allow sufficient room (minimum 300mm) for air to flow. Note: It is preferable that the cooler be located higher than the equipment to be cooled. The alternative is to install a check valve in the return line. 2) Fittings are provided on the right side of the cooler for Water inlet, Water outlet, Water return, Overflow, and Drain.
Page 5 3) The ball valves for Water outlet and Water return require 1 male BSP to 1 tube fittings so that they can be connected by flexible 1 hose to the external system. The Water outlet valve is connected from the cooler to the equipment to be cooled. 4) The Water inlet fitting can be connected to mains water by a snap-on garden hose type fitting. The Water return valve returns water to the cooler from the equipment being cooled. 5) The Drain valve and overflow pipe should be connected to a suitable drain. Note: Use reinforced braided type flexible 1 inch hose to connect the Water outlet and Water return valves to the external system, ensure that the hoses are secured with hose clamps at each end. It may be necessary to insulate the hoses to prevent condensation, temperature dependant. 6) The water level inside the tank is automatically maintained by an internal ball cock, similar to the type found in toilet cisterns. Turn on the mains water to the cooler and allow a few minutes for the water tank to fill. Caution: The equipment is fitted with a water flow bypass valve that is closed when the cooler leaves the factory. This bypass valve can be adjusted to allow a water flow between water outlet and water return which bypasses the external circuit. This is a safety feature that protects the water pump if the external circuit is particularly restrictive. The circulating pump fitted to the cooler needs a minimal amount of water flow through it to keep it cool and prolong its life. The bypass valve is located behind a removable panel between the water fittings (see photo). To achieve full cooling capacity from the cooler leave the bypass valve closed. Water Bypass Valve:
Page 6 7) With the water tank full and the water system connected to the equipment to be cooled, plug the mains lead in and turn on the main switch on the front control panel. 8) With the power turned on the pump will run and the refrigeration compressor will start. The temperature control will go through a short warm up period before displaying the set temperature on the bottom line and the water temperature on the top line. 9) Once the pump has started make sure that water is flowing through your equipment. If not it could be because the pump is not primed. Turn off the main switch, leave it for 3 minutes, and then turn on again. This will allow the interconnecting lines and the external system to fill and prime the pump. Repeat if required. Check the pipes and connections for leaks. Caution: The operating temperature range of the cooler is from +5ºC to +30ºC. When operating the cooler below +10ºC, add an antifreeze such as ethylene glycol at a rate of 15 to 25% to the water. This will ensure that no ice forms on the heat exchanger. 10) There are 2 indicating lights on the front control panel. Over temp : This light will be on when the operating temperature goes above the 30ºC temperature limit. A safety thermostat is factory set to turn off the cooler at this temperature. Low temp This light will be on when the operating temperature falls below the +5ºC temperature limit. A safety thermostat is factory set to turn off the cooler below this temperature.
Page 7 11) CHANGING THE SET VALUE (Omron E5CC CONTROL) Page button: Used to view calibration offset parameter. Scroll button: Not used by the operator. Side arrow: Used to move the cursor when changing temperature. Down arrow: Used to decrease parameter setting. Up arrow: Used to increase parameter setting. Simply use the up or down to increase or decrease the temperature. The Set temperature is the lower display, and the actual temperature is the upper display.
Page 8 12) CALIBRATION PROCEDURE FOR OMRON E5CC CONTROL: There are a number of factors that will affect the accuracy of the temperature displayed in relation to the actual temperature of the water, these include the following: Operating temperature: The accuracy of the temperature display may be different at 30ºC than at 5ºC. This is because there will be more losses through the pipes at lower temperature than at higher temperatures. Load: The load that the external system places on the cooling system will affect the accuracy of the display. Sensor location. Because of the above factors, it will be common to have an error between the temperature displayed and temperature measured at the centre of the workspace. For this reason the digital temperature controls have a parameter that can be used to correct the temperature displayed, called the PV Offset. Press the scroll button to access the sensor correction parameter. Use the up or down arrow to enter the sensor correction value. Allow the digit to stop flashing and the screen will display the adjusted value. In the example above the incubator temperature displayed (PV) is 37ºC. If a certified reference instrument measured 36ºC we would need to correct the temperature by - 1.0ºC (note that the sensor correction parameter is accurate to 1 decimal place). Please note that when calibrating the display temperature using the above method, you should be sure that the instrument used to verify the temperature at the middle of the workspace is one that you can trust. You should use an instrument that has been calibrated to a traceable source such as a NATA certified instrument.
Page 9 MAINTENANCE The Thermoline Scientific Recirculatory Coolers require no routine maintenance other than normal levels of cleanliness and cleaning of the condenser. The external surface is painted steel and may be wiped clean using a damp, soft cloth. Procedure for cleaning the condenser: The condenser is located at the side of the cooler and is accessible by removing the grille. It looks like an assembly of aluminium fins with a fan arranged to blow air through it. Turn off the power at the power point before cleaning the condenser! Using a stiff paint brush, carefully remove dust and dirt build-up from the condenser, ensuring that dust is not pushed back into the condenser fins. The use of a vacuum cleaner will help in cleaning up the dislodged material. The condenser fins may be sharp, take care to avoid personal injury by not directly contacting them with your hands! The fin material is thin and can be easily bent, take care not to flatten the fins as this may affect the efficiency of the condenser.
