2 US EPA s s Environmental Justice Hello everyone, in FY 2003, our Environmental Office applied for and received funding through US EPA s s Environmental Justice Small Grant Program. The total award we asked for and received was $12, The main purpose of our RFP was to fund two interested Tribal landfill operators in obtaining their Freon removal certificates. Freon, when thrown away into landfill sites can evaporate and harm our ozone layer. Also U.S. Congress amended the Clean Air Act to include laws to protect our ozone layer. Grant

3 Ed Christensen, MBE owner of Aurora Refrigeration As of July 1, 1992, refrigerants must be recovered from appliances before disposing of them. EPA is authorized to assess fines of up to $25, per day per violation of the Act. After submitting our required three MBE/WBE contracting/pricing quotes, we selected Aurora Refrigeration. We were contacted by Ed Christensen, owner to set up our training schedule, total cost of his training program, along with the total cost of additional equipment our trained team would need. He was very helpful in getting everything set up and I recommend his company to interested environmental program offices. Also by the way, Ed s s company is a minority owned business, so he qualifies under US EPA s s requirements.

4 Freon Removal training - continued The total cost for two people was: $1, This included all the required books needed and Ed s s rates for teaching the Freon removal course. He also gave us a great deal on the required equipment our team would need, once they completed the training. This consisted of a recovery unit, recovery tanks to hold the Freon, gauges and hoses needed, line piercing tools and a vacuum pump. Total cost was: $1, The recovery system allows us to put the harmful Freon into holding tanks to be sent to Freon recycling centers. Since their training our team hasn t t used the equipment but are planning to start soon.

6 Freon removal training - continued One of our Tribal landfill operators got sick with the flu and wasn t t able to attend the training session in Anchorage but Ed told us that he was planning on traveling to Dillingham to train people so he got another chance. It is also good to check with your rural UAF campuses because sometimes they have instructors lined up for similar training. Overall I recommend Ed s s company because we had an excellent outcome and according to our operators, he made sure everyone present understood thoroughly what he was teaching them.
