3 Note to Mom/Parent/Caretaker Hi! Are you ready for a cool experiment that will offer your child some science and benefit your home? In this three-day lesson your child will make their own laundry detergent, bottle it, wash a small load of clothes (to try out his/her homemade detergent), and record their results. Now comes your part: You will want to make sure your child has all the ingredients and supplies he/she will need beforehand. The stove is involved with the recipe, and adult supervision is required. The child will need to operate a washing machine and may need some assistance from you. There is a YouTube link to view, and your child may need your help on the internet. Awesome lessons your child will gain in this experiment: Science Cleanliness Following Directions Writing and recording results Self-pride in completing/making something Learning a chore (one that will last you a lifetime) Learn to pitch in to help family Save money
4 Laundering Science Experiment Day 1: Your task today is to make your own laundry detergent. Please read the information for ingredients, supplies and recipe. Make sure your follow directions correctly. Landry Detergent Ingredients & Supplies Borax Hot tap water Fels-Naptha Soap Bar Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda Essential Oils (desired fragrance: lemon, lavender, tea tree, vanilla, etc) optional 2-5 gallon buckets Funnel Grater Empty bottles (to fill the laundry detergent in after you ve made it) Laundry Detergent Recipe 4 Cups hot tap water 1 Fels-Naptha soap bar 1 Cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda 1 Cup Borax 1. Grate one bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. (Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.) 2. Fill two 5 gallon buckets half full of hot tap water. 3. Add melted soap, washing soda, and Borax into both buckets equally. 4. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. 5. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. 6. Stir, cover, and let sit overnight to thicken. Video: Here is a YouTube video you can view to help you!
5 Day 2: Your task is to bottle your laundry detergent and wash one small/medium load of laundry! (Ask mom for something she would like you to wash.) (Resuming from where you left off yesterday) 7. Stir your detergent well 8. Fill a used, clean bottle until your detergent is all bottled up. (Shake before each use. Your soap will gel.) Optional: Add drops of essential oil for each 2 gallons. Add once the soap has cooled. (Top Load Machines) Learning How To Wash Clothes Step-by-Step 1. Separate light-colored clothes from dark ones. 2. Separate laundry by fabric or texture. (Heavy fabrics like denim jeans and towels require a different washing-machine cycle than delicate items like undergarments.) 3. Read the care label on clothing before washing. 4. Turn on the machine and let the water run into the machine. Add 1/2 cup of laundry detergent. Put your first (or only) pile into the washer. Remember, not to overload the machine. 5. Check all the knobs on the machines to make sure you are washing the clothes correctly. Use the recommended temperature for various clothes. (White or light colored clothing usually goes on hot temperatures) 6. Close the top and press the start button. 7. Once the machine is done, open the top and take out the clothes. (Be sure to shake them out to unwrinkle them before you place them in the dryer.)
6 Day 3: Your task is to record your results. 1. Was your laundry detergent project successful? If not, what could you have differently? 2. Write a summary of your project from Day 1 including results, reflection, and anything new or interesting you learned. 3. How did your load of laundry come out? 4. Are you satisfied with your result? If not, why? Is there anything you could have done differently where you believe you would be satisfied? 5. Tell someone your results!
