25 Laundry FAQ How much bleach should I use? You should use half a cup (1/2 cup) for most laundry loads. If your laundry load is smaller than a normal load, you can use less than the recommended amount. The opposite applies for largerthan-normal loads. How much detergent should I use? Most bottles of detergent have instructions that recommend how much detergent to use per load. Most detergents also have a measuring cap. Do not fill the cap completely when you measure out detergent. How often should I do laundry? You should wash laundry once a week. For the average person, a week s worth of clothes will equal one load of laundry. You should be aware of clothes that will be damaged if they are overwashed. What clothes are considered delicates? Delicate clothes are made of light materials such as lace, silk, ribbons, or sequins. Lingerie, including bras and underwear, should be placed into the delicate wash. What does a dryer sheet do? A dryer sheet removes the static that builds up in your dryer while it is drying clothes. It also softens your clothing. How much laundry is too much for one wash? The amount of laundry depends on the size of the washing machine. Do not put more clothing than can comfortably fit in the washing machine. I consistently lose socks in my laundry. How can I avoid this? You can keep the socks together by attaching them together with a safety-pin. Remember to take the safety pin out of the socks when they are done drying. You can keep the safety pins together in a jar near the washer so that they are always handy. Can I wash shoes in the washing machine? Can I dry them in the dryer? You can wash your shoes in the washing machine; however, remove the shoelaces before doing so. Adding a bath towel to the load will help the shoes from banging around as violently in the washer. You can dry shoes in the dryer, but we suggest that you let them air-dry. 21
