CALL THE GURU GURU MODEL HAT/FP FREEZE PROTECTION VALVE APPLICATIONS: HAT/FP (Freeze Protection) valves are ideal for protection of piping, valves, fittings, pumps, condensate systems, safety showers, fire lines, spray nozzles, freeze sensitive equipment, or as backup protection on traced systems/equipment. The "AA" model is recommended for draining condensate from compressed air systems. ADVANTAGES: Typically freeze protection is effected by cracking open manual bleed valves. This method is at best risky. Human error or plugging of partially cracked valves annually accounts for large amounts of freeze damage to expensive equipment. HAT/FP valves eliminate this type of problem by automating freeze protection, reducing water consumption, and eliminating damage and down time. The unique ramtype plug and seat provide reliable, tight shutoff longer than any other design available. All HAT/FP valves are 100% factory-tested and covered by a 36 month prorated warranty. OPERATION: A thermostatic element senses ambient temperature and if this falls below 40 F (4.4 C) the valve modulates open allowing water to flow by the sensor. The valve will remain open as long as the water flowing by the sensor is less than 40 F (4.4 C). However, when the water flowing by the sensor becomes greater than 40 F (4.4 C) the valve will close. The valve is fully open at 35 F (2 C). CALL THE GURU GURU MODEL IC/FP-T INTERCHANGEABLE CARTRIDGE/ FREEZE PROTECTION APPLICATIONS: IC/FP-T (Freeze Protection) valves are ideal for the protection of piping, safety showers, condensate systems, fire lines, spray nozzles, or as backup protection on traced systems, where an unrestricted flow is required under normal operating conditions. Its lack of sensitivity to air temperature makes this valve ideal for applications where water conservation or wastewater disposal are a prime concern. OPERATION: Under normal operating conditions, water passes through a virtually unobstructed 1" NPT-F or larger tee body, allowing this valve to be used in higher flow lines. When the fluid temperature approaches freezing, and freeze damage is imminent, the thermal actuator located in the fluid stream modulates the valve open. When the makeup water temperature returns to the safe range, the valve then modulates closed, reducing waste water losses. Due to the actuator s placement in the fluid stream, this valve is unaffected by ambient air temperature, and opens only when the water is in danger of freezing, being fully open at 35 F (2 C), and fully closed at 40 F (4.4 C). CALL THE GURU GURU MODEL FPP AUTOMATIC DRAIN PLUG APPLICATIONS: Water cooled compressor heads Exposed water lines Tanks and related piping Exposed chiller lines Sump and reservoir protection ADVANTAGES: OPERATION: The FPP may be though of as an automatic freeze-out plug with one important difference: The stainless steel FPP cartridge releases itself from its body at a pre-set water temperature, rather than being forced out by the tremendous pressure of expanding ice. This provides almost a full one inch bore to rapidly drain a cooling system before damage can occur. Resetting and rearming the FPP prior to refilling the system is easily accomplished by simply reheating the cartridge and utilizing the slotted actuator feature. With the unique built-in check valve (on Models T and FL only), it's possible to replace the entire FPP without draining the system. CALL THE GURU GURU MODEL HAT/SP FOR SCALD PROTECTION HEAT ACTUATED TRAP/REVERSE ACTING OPERATION: When the water temperature rises above safe limits, and a danger of scalding exists, the thermal actuator modulates the valve open. A small sample of the water from the pipe system then flows past the sensor. If the water is above the acceptable range, the valve will continue to modulate open until the overtemperature water is eliminated. When the makeup water temperature returns to the safe range, the valve then modulates closed, reducing waste water losses. The HAT/SP opens only when the water exceeds safe limits. The HAT/SP-105 is full open at 105 F and remains open until water temperature is 95 F or below. The HAT/SP-115 is full open at 115 F and closed at 105 F and below. APPLICATIONS: Solar radiation or overheating caused by steam or electric tracing can cause extremely high temperatures at the point of use, resulting in a safety hazard for plant personnel. When installed in safety showers, eyewash stations, and other locations exposed to the same source of overheating as the system, the HAT/SP will be heated just as the pipe system. The valve will open to establish flow until the overtemperature water is eliminated and it will then modulate closed. ADVANTAGES: The HAT/SP valve continually senses and automatically bleeds excessively hot water from safety shower/eyewash systems. Protection is provided with minimal water consumption. After condensate forms and cools to near the setpoint, the HAT valve modulates the flow to maintain a constant condensate discharge temperature. HAT valves are wide open at start-up for rapid venting and initial heatup. HAT valves are self-draining after shutdown, to eliminate freeze damage. Typical setpoints include 105, 125, 180, 210, and 240 F (41, 52, 82, 99, 116 C). The valve will proportionally vary flow rate with temperature in a repeatable, precise manner. The ìvalve Engineî is essentially a complete operating internal assembly for a self - operating temperature actuated valve. The assembly includes everything except the valve body. This compact, economical design lends itself to simple integration into many kinds of equipment and devices. The heart of the engine is a solid-to-liquid phase change thermal actuator. The actuator contains a ThermoloidÆ compound which changes phase from a solid to a liquid as the temperature increases. As the phase change occurs, the volume of the ThermoloidÆ material changes significantly, with the liquid volume greater than the solid volume. CALL THE GURU GURU THERM-O-MIX STATION ALL WEATHER INSTANT TEMPERED WATER SUPPLY REDUNDANT CONTROL: Level 1: (V-1) This valve mixes heated and cold water and compensates for the pressure drop through the heat exchanger and associated piping. Level 2: (V-2) This valve opens when heater outflow temperature reaches 105 F, bypassing water back into the steam inlet to limit the heat exchanger output temperature. Level 3: (V-3) Senses flow from V-2 and modulates the steam valve closed. Additionally, if water supply is interrupted, the steam valve stays closed until water flow is re-established. Level 4: (V-4) Senses final water temperature and shuts off steam valve if water temperature exceeds 85 F. OPERATION: When the shower or eyewash is activated, the pressure drop on a diaphragm opens the steam control valve (V-3). CALL THE GURU GURU MODEL HAT/WWM-R FLUID TEMPERING VALVE APPLICATIONS: Can be used in applications where the fluid must be tempered, for example, the discharge of condensate or boiler blowdown with cooler water before piping to a sewer or return system. ADVANTAGES: Controls cooling of hot fluid to desired level before return to system or discharge to sewer. Flow through design facilitates discharge. Automatic temperature compensation conserves tempering fluid. OPERATION: The hot fluid connects to the side, pass through connection on the HAT/WWM-R valve. This connection is never regulated so it always remains open regardless of temperature or valve position. The hot fluid flow then passes over the thermal actuator which controls the cold fluid inlet port for tempering. The device is factory set and is not user adjustable, and is therefore tamper-proof. The valve is designed to yield outflow temperatures within a given range. If water is inadvertantly not turned on, the actuator turns off the steam flow at the set point temperature, preventing the typical "hose full of steam" problem. When selecting a temperature set point, ascertain the hot water temperature and quantity required, and the water and steam pressure available. First select the desired temperature rise chart. FOR CUSTOM DESIGNED ACTUATORS CALL THE GURU GURU THERMAL ACTUATORS SOLID-LIQUID PHASE CHANGE ACTUATORS 15 APPLICATIONS The precise motion of these thermal actuators can be used to operate a wide variety of devices, limited only by the imagination of the designer. Temperature actuated valves, switches, latches, clamps and control devices are typical applications. ADVANTAGES No outside power source is required to produce motion. Temperature change alone can be used to operate a device; e.g., open or close a valve, move or release a latch, operate a switch. Because the Thermoloid material operates in both the solid and liquid phase, each of which are essentially incompressible, load changes on the piston (within design limits) have little or no effect on operating temperature. This is in contrast to vapor-filled or liquid to vapor phase change devices which are generally very sensitive to load changes (changing the load on these devices, e.g., changing spring tension, is used to change the operating temperature range). 1-Actuator assembly includes return springs and rod ends; unit contracts in length up to several inches when cooled. 2,6-Conventional medium output actuators. 3,12-Actuator assemblies including integral heater for remote control. 4,10-Actuator assemblies include integral valve cage with valve seat, spring flange, seal grooves. 5,7,14-Long, thin actuator design; stroke nearly equal to actuator body length. 8,9-Typical miniature actuators. 11-Conventional low output actuator. 13-Actuator with proprietary seal design for high reliability in extreme conditions. 15- Actuator with integral fluid sensing connections with over 2 stroke and 200+lbs. output force. OPERATION The thermal actuator is filled with Thermoloid material, which changes phase from a solid to a liquid and expands as the temperature increases. Since the material is essentially incompressible and encased in a rigid housing, only the piston can move and extend as the volume of the material increases. This motion can be used to operate a wide variety of devices. When the Thermoloid material cools the volume contracts and allows the piston to retract if a return force is acting on the piston. The piston will not normally retract unless a return force is present. The phase change and resultant motion occurs over a narrow temperature range. This property allows precise control of a device at a specific temperature with no significant effect outside the chosen control range. Since the operating temperature of solid-liquid phase change actuators is determined by the Thermoloid material properties (i.e., melting and solidification temperatures), the operating temperature is extremely stable, repeatable, and accurate. The properties of these thermostatic materials are so precise that they are used as primary reference standards by ASTM for instrument calibration.
