Frequently Asked Questions About BK-1 Heaters (BK-1-G4 and BK-1-DI) Are there different models for the 120V and 240V BK-1 s? No, both the BK-1-G4 and the BK-1-DI are capable of both voltages. The units will draw 37.5A from its one (1) 240V connection. The units will draw 13A from the 120V Master connection and 12.2A from each of its remaining five (5) 120V connections for a total draw of 74A. Up to six (6) connections may be used for full power, but units will run with fewer than six (6) connections with a reduced heat output. The difference between the BK-1-G4 and the BK-1-DI is that the BK-1-DI is capable of using both the 240V and the 120V inputs simultaneously whereas the BK-1-G4 runs on either 120V connections or the 240V connection, but not simultaneously. Why are there six 120V inputs? The 120V inputs can supply only a limited power based on the size of the circuit. The six (6) inputs split the total amperage draw of 74A into one (1) 13 input (for the master connection) and five (5) 12.2A inputs, allowing each connection to draw power from a 120V power supply on a 15A circuit without tripping a breaker or blowing a fuse. Which of the six 120V extension cords must be plugged in for use? The master / control power 120V extension cores must be plugged in or the unit will not operate. Do I need all six 120 volt extension cords plugged in? No, the units will run with fewer than six cords plugged in but at a reduced heat output. We recommend using all six plugs as that will allow the unit to produce the most heat which provides the quickest heating time, the ability to treat a larger space than with fewer than all six plugs, and to ensure that the desired temperature is reached. 3

Can I use all six 120 volt extension cords and the 240 volt extension cord at the same time? The BK-1-G4 is not designed to use both voltages at the same time. The BK-1-DI is designed to allow operation with 120V inputs and 240V inputs simultaneously. What size power cord should I use? It depends on how long the extension cord is. For 120 volts the wire must be at least #10 wire for up to 50 feet. For 240 volt minimum wire size is a #6 for up to 100 feet. For other lengths please see the chart in the owner's manual. What size space can be treated with a BK-1? Sizing and treatment times will vary depending on the type of construction and the conditions of the treatment area, the objects in the treatment area, and the voltage supplied to the unit. Our testing was in a 256 square foot chamber with 8 foot ceilings constructed of Styrofoam (R-10 insulation). How long will a treatment take? Treatment must be long enough to ensure that the bugs and eggs are subjected to lethal temperatures and times. This means that after the initial rise to desired temperature, that there will be a period of time where that high temperature is maintained to allow the heat to penetrate any objects being treated. This would likely be several hours, but will depend largely on how quickly the objects being treated absorb heat. Spacing out the objects in the treatment area and circulating the heat will aid in the objects absorbing heat from the air. Why is it taking so long to heat the area? There are many factors that affect heating times. They include size of the area, voltage levels in the building and construction of the space. Please see Heating Time Section in the owner's manual. Heating times can be decreased by adding insulation or covering doors, windows, vents, etc. 4

Where can I use a BK-1? The unit must have adequate power supply (refer to the spec sheet or quote for voltage, amperage, and power consumption). Supplying voltages other than those listed may result in decreased performance, or a clicking sound that indicates low airflow due to insufficient power. The unit must be powered such that it is grounded and the power supply must be fused and grounded. The unit must be on a level surface for proper operation. If tilted more than 25 in any direction, it will not operate. The unit is rated for indoor use only. Should I keep the heater inside the heated area? The heater will work best if the heater is kept inside the area being heated. The sensors must remain in the area. The Honeywell Thermostat is the only part of the system that must remain outside of the heated area. Can I keep the Honeywell Thermostat inside the heated area? No. the Honeywell thermostat needs to be outside the heated area. Only the sensors need to be inside the heated area. Where should I place the sensors? At least one sensor should be placed at ceiling level above and in front of the heater s exhaust. It is most likely the hottest place in the treatment area. The other sensor can be placed anywhere in the treatment area. What should be my set point on the Honeywell controller? The controller is preset at the factory for a temperature of 135 F. The operator must verify that any objects in the treated area are allowed to be at the treatment temperature and for the duration of the treatment. If the area has fire suppression (sprinkler) system, the operator must ensure that treatment does not exceed the allowable temperature of the fire suppression (sprinkler) system. What should the differential be? We suggest 5 degrees. 5

I want to use a generator. What kind of generator do you recommend? For our recommended generator, please refer to the BK Accessories quote. If you have not received an Accessories quote, contact a Mosebach sales representative. Only half my heater works. What s wrong? There is a top and bottom section to your heater. One section is powered by the 120V connections and the other is powered by the 240V connection. If you are operating on 120V only or 240V only then only that section will be generating heat. The BK-1-DI with all connections powered will heat both sections. Figure 1 Heating Elements I hear a continuous clicking sound, what s wrong? Clicking means that there is not enough air being moved through the heater. Sometimes the clicking does not start until the area is heated. In both cases the most common cause is low voltage. Increase the size of the wire being used in the extension cords or reduce the cord s length. The BK-1-G4 and BK-1-DI heaters are rated for 120V or 240V single phase electric. Supplying less voltage may result in insufficient airflow causing the clicking sound. 6

The fan is running, but there is no heat. First, check the connection of the Honeywell thermostat unit and set points. Second, make sure the air intake is further than three feet from a wall and it is unobstructed. Lastly, verify the power supply / voltage to the master / control plug is correct. Who can I contact with additional questions? If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact Mosebach Manufacturing at support@mosebachresistors.com. Please provide the serial number, part number, contact information and a detailed description of the question or concern. Treatment Suggestions: Adjustments must be made to treatment procedures for the given conditions in a treatment area. Effective treatment may require larger or multiple heaters depending on the size and conditions of a given treatment area. Correct power must be supplied to the unit. Please refer to the quote for rated voltages and amperages. Treatment Recommendations 1. Use seals to block any gaps in the doors 2. High temperature insulation to cover vents, air conditioners, isolate spaces and cover cement 3. Insulate windows 4. Insulate / cover any vents or through-wall AC units 5. Furniture might have to be rearranged for better heat circulation (including mattress and box spring) 6. Fans to help circulate the heat are recommended. Fans must be rated to run in high temperature and should have low amperage draw to prevent tripping a breaker and losing treatment time. 7. Correct voltages must be applied for the heaters to run properly. The BK-1-G4 and BK-1-DI are rated for 120V and 240V single phase 7

8. The starting temperature of the area will affect the time needed to reach temperature. A very cold area will take longer to reach lethal temperatures than a warm one. 9. Use more or larger heaters per treated area 10. Thermostat must be outside of the treated area where it can be easily monitored. It may not stay inside a treated area, and any entry into an area being treated will result in heat loss. 11. Any fan or ventilation system that either draws in outside air or vents out the heated air from the treatment area will result in heat loss. 12. Any door or window that is left open, even slightly, will result in heat loss. 13. Every space is different, and treatment procedures must be adjusted to accommodate the particulars of the space being treated. 8

Load steps and load capacity Power Number of Connections KW per Connections Amps Per Connection Total Amps 240 VAC 120 VAC Receiving WARNING! ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD. Electric shock can lead to severe injury or death. If the Heater has been damaged in transit, do not operate until a competent technician inspects the unit and determines it can be safely operated. Inspecting 1. Check the exterior of the shipping container or packaging material for obvious damage. 2. Document and report any exterior damage to the carrier immediately. 3. When wheels are installed, check that they turn freely. CAUTION! Do not leave the Heater on a ramp without first blocking the wheels. 4. Check the control panel for any obvious damage. 10

Lifting and Moving CAUTION! Use proper lifting devices or methods. Inadequate lifting devices or methods can damage the heater or cause injury. Handles are provided to assist in moving the units. Do not attempt to lift the unit unless you are physically able to lift great weights. 1. Wheel Kits are shipped with each heater. Wheels make moving the unit much easier. Installation drawing provided later in the manual. 2. Always block the wheels to prevent unintended movement. 2) Safety Heaters are designed to handle only specified voltages. It is possible voltages higher than those applied can be present inside the Heater and at external connections of the Heater. Work on Heater internal systems should only be attempted by highly trained technicians and only when power has been disconnected and cannot be reconnected to the unit. Do not store material within 40 feet of the heater that can generate flammable fumes. These fumes could be drawn into the heater. The heater elements, even under normal operating conditions, may reach temperatures able to ignite flammable fumes. Materials such as paper, textiles and leather may be damaged or ignited if kept too close to the exhaust. Try to keep materials of this type out of the direct path of the exhaust. If material such as paper, textiles or leather must be in the exhaust path, keep the material at a sufficient distance so that they do not get heated to their flash points. Remove all animals and plants from the area to be heated. Many plants and animals can be stressed by the temperatures used in pest control. This stress can lead to the premature deaths of plants and animals left in the heated area. Insure all electrical and electronic devices left in the area to be heated are rated for the temperature to which you will heat the area. The Thermostats provided with the unit can only monitor the temperature near the sensors. Temperatures in other parts of the heated area may be considerably higher or lower than those reported by the thermostats. It is recommended that the sensors be placed near the ceiling or in the upper most part of the room being heated. This will minimize, but not eliminate, the possibility of temperatures in the room exceeding the set point on the thermostat. Fire sprinkler heads, heat detectors and fire sensors have different ratings. These ratings vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and between manufacturers. The operator is responsible to determine the ratings of the system(s) used in the heated area and to insure the room temperature does not exceed those ratings. Any unintentional activation of a fire suppression system or fire detection system is solely the responsibility of the operator. The heater must be installed and operated in accordance to local electrical codes. Power cord insulation must be rated for the environment and conditions in which the heater is being operated. 11

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS When using electrical appliances, basic precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, and injury to persons, including the following: 1) Read all instructions before using this heater. 2) This heater is hot when in use. To avoid burns, do not let bare skin touch hot surfaces. Use handles when moving this load bank. Keep combustible materials, such as furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes, and curtains at least 6 feet (1.8 meters) from the front, the sides and the rear. 3) Extreme caution is necessary when any heater is used by or near children or invalids and whenever the heater is left operating and unattended. 4) Always unplug heater when not in use. 5) Do not operate any heater with a damaged cord or plug or after the heater malfunctions or has been dropped or damaged in any manner. Discard heater or return to authorized service facility for examination and/or repair. 6) Do not use outdoors. 7) Do not use in wet or moist locations. 8) This load bank is not intended for use in wet indoor environments. 9) Do not run cord under carpeting. Do not cover cord with throw rugs, runners, or similar coverings. Do not route cord under furniture or appliances. Arrange cord away from traffic areas and where it will not be tripped over. 10) To disconnect the heater, turn controls off, then remove plug from outlet. 11) Connect to properly grounded outlets only. 12) Do not insert or allow foreign objects to enter any ventilation or exhaust opening as this may cause an electric shock or fire, or damage the heater. 13) To prevent a possible fire, do not block air intakes or exhaust in any manner. Do not use on soft surfaces, like a bed, where openings may become blocked. 14) A load bank has hot and arcing or sparking parts inside. Do not use it in areas where gasoline, paint, or flammable liquids are used or stored. 15) Use this heater only as described in this manual. Any other use not recommended by the manufacturer may cause fire, electric shock, or injury to persons. 16) Always plug heaters directly into a wall outlet/receptacle. Never use with a relocatable power tap (outlet/power strip). 17) The heater has an over-temperature switch that will turn the unit off automatically if it achieves 150 F. Once internal temperatures are below this value it will run. 18) SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS 12

Grounding Wire WARNING! ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD. The internal grounding wire must be connected to earth ground. Operating without a grounding connection could lead to injury or death. There are no direct ground connections provided other than those going through the plug. The cover on the heater does not have to be removed in order to ground the unit. Power connections WARNING! Electrical shock hazard. Electrical connections should only be made through a plug or direct connection designed for operation at or above the voltages and currents expected. Using plugs or connections that vary from this design may lead to damage, injury or death. NOTE: The BK-1-DI heater will not operate unless the 120 VAC Control Power (Master) receptacle is connected and powered. On the BK-1-DI both the 120 VAC and 240 VAC heating elements can be powered at the same time. The regular BK-1-G4 will allow the 120 VAC heating elements to heat when the 120 VAC receptacles are powered with 120/OFF/240 switch in the 120VAC position. Similarly the BK-1-G4 s 240 VAC heating elements will only heat if the 240 VAC receptacle is powered and the selector switch is in the 240 VAC position. Different locations use electrical connections of different designs. The heater is shipped with a special power connector for the 240 VAC circuit. It is the user s responsibility to connect wires between the power connector and the user s power system. Open the special power connector for the 240 VAC circuit Figure 3a Supplied Power Connector Run customer supplied cable through the non-terminal end of the power connector before connecting the wires to the terminals. 13

Figure 3c Power Connector Receptacle When you select your plugs or connections ensure that they are designed for the voltage being used. The plug or connection must also be able to handle the rated current continuously. The plug or connection must be specifically designed to accommodate a ground wire. The ground wire must be attached and the power system used must be properly ground. Ungrounded or improperly grounded systems could lead to damage, injury or death. Heater elements are not fused inside the BK heaters. The user must make sure that properly sized fuses or circuit breakers protect the circuits feeding the BK heater. The 240 VAC circuit must be protected with a 40-ampere or 50-ampere breaker. 14

Power cords used to feed the BK heaters must be rated for or higher than the expected currents. For the 240 VAC BK-1 circuit the power cord and plug must be rated for at least 40 amperes. Power cord insulation must be rated for the environment and conditions in which the heater is being operated. Suggested Wire Sizes and Length of Cable: Voltage Wire size & length Wire size & length Wire size & length 120 VAC #10 up to 50 feet #8 up to 100 feet #6 up to 150 feet 240 VAC #6 up to 100 feet #4 up to 200 feet #2 up to 300 feet Air intakes and exhaust ports Caution! All air intakes and exhaust ports must be clear and fully open. Each Heater has one air intake designed for proper air flow. Reducing or blocking air flow will lead to overheating and Heater failure. High volumes of air are needed to prevent load elements from overheating. By their very nature, resistors under load change electrical energy to heat. This heat must be removed from the unit. The fans, intake, and exhaust ports are sized to provide the proper amount of airflow. Preventing or limiting airflow will cause the Heater to overheat. Keep the intake at least four feet away from walls and obstructions. To increase the life of the load elements, allow the fans to run at least 3 minutes after the thermostat is shut off or until exhaust air is cool. Caution! Material can be moved by intake air or exhaust air. Failure to secure material could cause injury to bystanders or damage to the Heater. Good airflow keeps the Heater from overheating but can very easily move light debris such as paper, cardboard and dust with great velocity. Loose materials around the Heater, especially near the intake and exhaust, must be secured to prevent movement. Material on the exhaust side may be blown into and injure a bystander. Material near the intake may be taken into the Heater and damage the internal components. Exhaust temperature WARNING! FIRE AND BURN HAZARD. Keep materials that can produce flammable fumes at least 40 feet away from the heater. A great deal of heat is expelled from the heater. Temperatures inside the heater are sufficient to ignite flammable fumes or materials. Failure to maintain proper housekeeping and properly securing fume producing material could lead to fire, burns and/or injury. Load resistors generate a great deal of heat. Even with sufficient air flow, the internal component temperature could exceed 211 degrees C (411.8 degrees F). Air and material several feet from the Heater can be heated to temperatures in excess of 183 degrees C (361.4 degrees F). Materials such as paper, textiles or leather should not be kept in the heater s exhaust path. If 15

paper, textile or leather materials are in the heater s exhaust path the material must be kept a sufficient distance away so that the material will not be heated to its flash point. Flammable fumes or material such as small pieces paper could be drawn into the Heater, ignited and expelled from the exhaust port. Operators standing on the exhaust side of the Heater may be exposed to high temperatures or possibly burning materials. Unless proper housekeeping is practiced in the vicinity of the heater, while it is in operation, fire could result. Connecting and disconnecting WARNING! BURN HAZARD. Attempting to connect or disconnect leads while heater is in operation can lead to burns and/or blindness. Connecting or disconnecting plugs and receptacles while current is flowing or voltage is present may cause arcing. Arcing can generate a great deal of light, heat and possibility of electrocution. Heaters use high-powered resistor elements that have very small ohmic values. Even at low voltages, large currents may be flowing through connectors. Attempting to couple or uncouple electrical connection under load may lead to arcing. Arcing can cause eye damage or burns. 3) Operation Your Heater should operate smoothly and without problems for a very long time. WARNING! Honeywell controller must remain outside of the treated room. If controller case temperature exceeds 145 degree F, the thermostat will fail. NOTE: NOTE: On the BK-1-G4 only the upper or lower heating section will be on at one time. One section operates at 120 VAC. When the master 120 VAC is on 1/6 th of the heating section will heat. For each additional 120 VAC power plug installed, an additional 1/6 th of the section will be heating. All six receptacles must be powered in order to have the entire section heating. The second section will be on when the 240 VAC plug is used. When the 240 VAC plug is used the entire section will be heating. The BK-1-DI heater will not operate unless the 120 VAC Control Power (Master) receptacle is connected and powered. On the BK-1-DI both the 120 VAC and 240 VAC heating elements can be powered at the same time. The regular BK-1-G4 will allow the 120 VAC heating elements to heat when the 120 VAC receptacles are powered with the selector switch in the 120 position. Similarly the BK-1-G4 s 240 VAC heating elements will only heat if the 240 VAC receptacle is powered and the selector switch is in the 240 VAC position. 4) Pre-startup 1. Check housekeeping in the operational area and correct all unsafe conditions. Failure to do this may result in debris being blown around and may cause a fire hazard. 16

2. Check the control panel and move SELECTOR switch to the OFF position. Caution! All air intakes and exhaust ports must be clear and fully open. Reducing or blocking air flow will lead to overheating and Heater failure. 3. Remove animals and plants from area to be heated. 4. Remove electrical and electronic items not rated for expected temperatures. 5. If auxiliary air circulation fans are being used in the treated area, insure that none of the circulating fans are pointing directly at the exhaust of the BK-1. Pointing a fan directly at the BK-1 exhaust could reduce air flow to the heating elements and cause equipment damage. Remote Thermostat 120-OFF-240 Selector switch Thermostat Connection Point 120 VAC Master provides fan and control power and 1460 watts of heat Remote Thermostat Each addition 120 VAC extension cord installed will provide 1460 additional watts of power. For most rooms all 5 additional plugs must be installed 240 VAC Plug. This provides power to the heating elements and the control circuit Figure 5 Control Panel Typical Fan Panel BK-1-G4 Shown Startup 1. Place the BK-1 heater inside the area to be heated. 2. Determine where you will get power from 17

a. In modern motel rooms, the living space and bathroom have separate breakers. You can get one 120 VAC extension cord from each. Additional power must be connected to power outlets in adjacent rooms or from the hallway. b. 240 VAC can be obtained from the central switch box or from a portable generator. The 240 VAC circuit must be able to provide power of at least 40 amperes (50 amperes preferred). A portable generator must be able to provide at least (15000 preferred) watts of power. 3. Connect the male end of an extension cord to the female connector on the thermostat. Plug the female end of the extension cord into the Remote Thermostat Connection point on the BK-1. Connect the male plug on the thermostat into a wall socket. The screen on the thermostat will light. See programming instructions and heating guideline shown later in this manual. Thermostat must remain outside of the heated area. 4. Place the thermostat sensors inside of the heated area. Place at least one thermostat at ceiling level above the heater s exhaust. Connect sensor connectors to the thermostat. 5. Connect all six 120 volt extension cords to independently protected outlets for best results, if you plan to use only 120 volt power. If you plan to use 240 VAC, connect the single 240 VAC connector to a single phase 240 VAC power source. Ensure that power systems are properly grounded. 6. Turn the power switch on at the source (this may be a breaker(s) in the main panel). 7. Turn the selector Switch to the desired voltage position. Check to ensure that the blower fan has started to turn. Heater elements will then powered up. Heat will start to be generated within a few seconds. Caution! Caution! Heater elements will automatically turn off when the set temperature is reached. The heater elements will automatically power up, based on how the thermostat is programmed. See programming instructions later in this manual. Thermostats will not control the temperature of the enclosure being heated unless the sensors are completely within the enclosed area. Shutdown 1. Disconnect thermostat from its 240VAC power. 2. Allow the heater to cool. 3. Place heater ON/OFF Switch in the OFF position.. 4. Shut power off at the source (this may be at the main control panel). 5. Disconnect all power cords from the heater and sensor cords from the thermostat. 6. Coil cords carefully to prevent damage. 18

7. Move unit to storage. WARNING! Do not attempt to change voltage while heater is under load. Move the selector switch to the OFF position wait at least 2 seconds and then move to the desired voltage. Failure to wait may allow unintended contactors to remain on and cause an over current situation. 5) Use of Auxiliary Air Movers (Fans) The fan inside of the BK heaters is sufficient to keep the internal heating elements within an acceptable temperature range. Air flow is sufficient to move a large volume of hot air into the heated area. However, the temperature distribution throughout the treated area will not be uniform. Auxiliary air movers (fans) should be used to help create a more uniform temperature distribution. Air movers can be placed in multiple locations within the heated area. The air movers should be placed in different directions to help circulate heated air into remote points of the heated area. Auxiliary air movers should never be directed towards the BK heater. Air movers directed towards the BK heater could reduce the air flow across the heating elements. Reduced air flow could cause the heater to fail prematurely. 6) Wheel Kit Legs and wheels are shipped with your heater along with mounting hardware. These items can be mounted using normal hand tools. To aid you in the installation, a drawing of how the items are mounted is attached to this manual. Depending on the kit ordered you will receive either 2 wheels and 2 feet or 4 wheels. 7) Expected Heating Times Room heating times will vary. A sixteen-foot by sixteen-foot by eight-foot room (2000 cubic feet) with no windows and excellent insulation may reach 135 degree Fahrenheit in less than 60 minutes. Larger rooms will take much longer. Some rooms with poor insulation or of concrete construction may not reach temperature unless more than one BK heater is used. Some factors that will affect heating times are: Outside Temperature Low outside temperatures will lead to longer heating times. Start Temperature Lower starting room temperature will increase heating times. If possible use the existing room heating unit to run room temperature as high as possible. This will reduce heating times. External Vents Sealing external vents will prevent hot air from leaving or cold air from entering the room. If hot air is allowed to leave the room or cold air is allowed to enter the room heating times will be increased. 19

Insulation Rooms with poor insulation will take much longer to heat than rooms with excellent insulation. Wall and Ceiling Construction Rooms with cinder/concrete block walls and/or concrete ceiling are extremely difficult to heat. These types or rooms may need additional BK units to bring the room up to acceptable temperature. Temporarily covering concrete with insulation will help to reduce heating time. Windows Rooms with large or many windows typically increase heat loss. Rooms with large or many windows will take longer to heat. Seal windows with plastic if possible. Outside Walls Rooms will outside walls will take longer to heat than rooms without outside walls. Electrical Power Heaters are rated at 120 VAC and 240 VAC. Heaters operating at lower voltages will take longer to heat that those powered at the rated voltage. Room Shape Ell shaped rooms will take longer to heat than rectangular room. Alcoves and bathroom areas will be at lower temperatures than the main part of the room. Open Doors to Un-Heated Areas Doors open even a little bit will allow large amounts of heat to be lost. Some doors may have to be open slightly for power cables. Blocking these doors with sheet insulation with only a small opening for the power cables will help keep most of the hot air within the heated area. 8) Troubleshooting Blower will not turn on. Unit will not give off heat Long heating times Check external power source. Check for debris preventing fan from turning. Check for open blower fuse. Check that the unit is on level ground. It will not operate if tilted at an angle greater than 25 in any direction. Insure 120/OFF/240 selector switch is in the proper mode. Blower intake must be clear. Thermostat set on cool rather than heat. Thermostat set point too low. Thermostat differential too high (differential should be set to 10 or less). Sensors not connected to thermostat. See Expected Heating Times section of this manual. Check applied voltage. See if there are any vents pulling hot air out of the room or pushing cooler air int If you are in the 120 VAC mode, are all 120 VAC circuits powered? Unit is clicking Check applied voltage if voltage drops below 100 VAC the unit will click. Check power cord size and length. Long thin power cords will reduce voltage to Clicking is very detrimental to the operation of the unit. Do not operate heater if clicking. 20
